Yeah, I'm that guy that at home, not in public of course, that will put a little spice on my hand and lick it off (to test it of course). I know, but I'm just a spice freak, what can I say! LOVE this tea shop! We booked their High Tea experience and it was wonderful. You make a reservation in advance. Their availability is Tuesday-Saturday from 10:30-2pm. I was so impressed by their delicious 100% plant base menu. It was so fresh and bursting with flavor. The owner Lori and her staff were so friendly and helpful with picking out teas we'd like. My friend gifted me some tea from Spice of Life when she was visiting the area. The tea was lovely. When I visited Paso Robles a couple years later and stumbled into this shop, I was surprised to recognize the tea bag labels as being the same tea my friend had given me. This is a great little shop for tea because they have so many flavors and varieties to choose from. I spent some time looking at them all before choosing a few to bring home. The shop also sells many other things, such as salt, spices, gift items, teapots, infusers, cups, chocolates, nuts, snacks. They even had a Fellow Stagg EKG gooseneck kettle, which is the same one I use for making pour over coffee. The people working here are very friendly and helpful. There's a parking lot out front. I was looking for a quick but good option for lunch on my way from NorCal to SoCal, and learned that my usual cafe had recently closed its brick and mortar. YELP led me to Spice of Life, and I now have a (new to me) fave stop in Paso! This is a darling tea shop with light bites, and everything is vegan! The employee was a bit unfamiliar and unprepared to answer my questions, but the owner stepped in and she was very kind and helpful. I had a half avocado toast and half salad, which were both excellent. I also selected a loose leaf mint tea and had it iced, it was so aromatic and delicious! After finding out about this place a few years ago, we've been coming back here since! There is a grand variety of cooking spices, teas, and gifts here. There is also a cafe spot towards the back where you can order any of the teas I believe and also food items. Towards the front of the shop are some counter stools and a few tables and chairs for you to enjoy your food. The ladies running the shop are very kind. They offer drink samples and also were helpful when we were looking for something specific. I was able to find black salt here after not being able to find it in any other common stores near me. I wanted it to try out a recipe to mimic egg flavors for the sulfuric taste/smell ha. There's a vegan egg recipe I wanted it for, and boy did adding this make a difference! My family really enjoys the teas here too - both to enjoy ourselves and to also give as gifts. You can browse through all the tea varieties at the back left area of the shop. Chatted with the owner, Laurie who knows everything about tea. We also had great help with questions from Pomar. I bought a little tea pot and infuser and some herbal tea, which I have really been enjoying. They have a menu with a lot of tea options they can make ie tea lattes. I spent 10 minutes trying and smelling each small jar containing different tea leaves. I enjoyed a cup of cold black tea at a small table by the window. They can place any tea you'd like in a little bag that will cost you $6. This is totally reasonable and a great way to try multiple teas without spending too much! They also let you smell the teas which makes a huge difference. Smell is such a powerful force and I'm glad they tap into it! Oh and they threw in a free tea sample since I bought a couple different items. I appreciate that very much. SERVICE: Super friendly and helpful. What a special find! We initially drove past this store as we were leaving the Paso Robles downtown area to return to our hotel, but it was closed. I Yelped it and it sounded so interesting that we decided to return the next morning when it opened up on our way as we left town. Funny, the owner is Lori F. on Yelp and so am I. I had to look at the Yelp comments twice before I realized that it wasn't something that I had written about this store. Anyway, this is a specialty store with mainly teas and different herbs, spices, and salts. There is a nice selection of unusual pastas and dried beans. They will make you some hot and cold teas for you to purchase. There was such a variety of things, yet not crowded and overwhelming. I remember seeing a Stanley Tucci book in the store near some interesting pastas and dried beans. I also saw the My Greek Table book....funny, I just saw an episode of that very show! The teas are easy to see as are the herbs and spices. Just lovely! Some of my favorite stores are those that display their products in a way that doesn't overwhelm you and is visually appealing. This is that store in my opinion. Such a happy place! We had such a wonderful experience at this store and the owner Lori couldn't have been sweeter. We bought several teas and salts, herbs and spices. I could have stayed longer just looking around at all there was but alas, my husband reminded me that we had to get going! He was grateful to Lori for explaining to him how to brew his Pu-erh tea. At least now it no longer tastes like dirt! I ordered a kava tea to drink and loved it so much that Lori graciously gave me instructions how to make it! Super cute shop with a ton of spices and incredibly helpful staff. I came in for some garam masala and ended up with a bagful of other goodies. I was curious about the "coconut bacon" and the cashier was kind enough to give me a sample. WOW! I'm not vegan or even vegetarian but I'd forgo the "real stuff" for that any time!!! This place is fantastic! And definitely a gem in downtown Paso. The employees who helped me (including the owner) were beyond friendly and accommodating. Got two iced teas - passion berry and cinnamon apricot - both were delicious (even unsweetened) and perfect for a hot day. I also ordered a seasonal salad - cabbage, sesame dressing, almonds, curried chickpeas - and it was seriously delicious and healthy. Stopped by the other day to pick up some of my favorite items from Spice of Life (garlic powder and onion granules). Since I started purchasing my spices here, my cooking has been elevated to a higher level. The spices which I purchase at Spice of Life taste and smell like the real deal vs the ones available elsewhere which have been cut with synthetic additives, etc. The staff at Spice of Life are some of the nicest folks around and they make everyone feel welcome. The selection of items which Lori, the owner, packs into this local treasure is really incredible and yet the store is always bright, clean and well organized. This is "toys-r-us" for anyone who likes to cook and who appreciates pure and healthy ingredients. Meaning, you'll want to purchase one of everything. Must stop if you are passing through Paso and you like all things spices. Be prepared to buy more than you came for. Owner and the other person working there are so friendly and helpful. If you see something you are interested in they will make up a sample for you to try. All their spices are really fresh and they have some interesting blends I've never seen anywhere. For example they make a tea called herbal sunshine that is loaded with turmeric ginger and other Indian spices. They say that they put in black pepper so it makes you absorb the turmeric. Tried a sample and loved it. Warming but not too spicy. I also got a cup of their gypsy chai which was made with rooibos and had a nice spice flavor. I always get a bottle of their poultry seasoning as it makes everything taste really good and it's a powder so it infuses the Italian spices with whatever you are making. They also have some hot spices like African bird peppers and Calabrian chili from Italy. I was trying to find something to make coconut jerkey and they let me smell this product that blew me away. Smelled just like barbecue but totally naturally made. Had to get that also:). Yes make sure your credit card is somewhat freed up. They also carry other items to make teas, some local products and cookbooks. They also have cards of recipe ideas if you buy certain blends. I bought their southwestern mesquite blend so they gave me a tortilla soup recipe. I will be back for refills when passing through Paso. Check it out if you want to spice up your life. read more
