Fortunately, I decided to quickly check out this food store on my way back. I can now say with confidence that this is the place to get your herbs and spices, for it only stocks the most flavoursome seasonings at prices far more realistic than your average supermarket's. My cinnamon was big and uneven. With some huge sticks and some tiny and all ranging from a woody brown to a powdery orange, this looked like it had come from a real plant. The spice was reasonably priced, too, with a large bag of this rustic looking stuff for just under two quid. Since then, I've been back to Al-Sheemal for various products. The parsley I asked for at the back of the store was given to me in a generous bunch, and the place is excellent both for food cupboard stables and middle-Eastern specialities. The staff certainly know what they're selling and are always more than happy to help so there is no need to be shy if you haven't the foggiest what anything is or does. I have had a fried chicken…read moreaddiction for years and when I moved to Wales in 2016 I struggled to find something as good as the Favorite Chicken and Morley experiences I had in London...until I found Chicken House. I find KFC supply chicken that is tiny and dry but Chicken House give a generous size that's succulent every time. KFC give chips like they're having a supply issue and Chicken House give enough chips that could feed a family of four. But that isn't a complaint. The chips are amazing and I believe the chicken shops around never supply good in both chicken and chips - except this place. I have lost count how many times I have ordered from this place but every time they're quick to deliver and the food is always spot on. They once made an error with drinks and to apologise they came by with my correct drink and extras for free. Also if you love spicy their spicy wings are mega spicy. I hope they never go out of business.

There were several Middle Eastern families in the restaurant, so I knew the food must be good. It was nice watching families come together and eat. Some would go upstairs to the prayer room which I found to be a nice touch to the restaurant. We ordered Baba Ghanoush, Hummus with shawarma, and falafel as starters. They were all excellently made. For mains, we ordered the mixed grill for three and the chicken biryani. For dessert, we had coffee and baklava. I have eaten middle eastern food in many places: LA, New York, Dublin, London, and Dubai. This was the best I have ever had. Period. Bar none. Even though the wait to order may have initially caused me to rate the restaurant five stars, the food and the subsequent service made me rethink that. Candy Cave is essentially a café for kids. It serves an interesting assortment of things like candy…read morefloss, Halal sweets as well as sugar free sweet options. It's an innovative idea for a shop, but I'm not convinced that Clifton Street is the ideal location for it, especially since the council implemented the new one way traffic system about a year ago. I would expect to see a shop of this kind in the city centre, or perhaps even on City Road, as it is clearly targeted at children, and is a place where parents can take their kids for a treat, or a larger group of children as part of a birthday celebration. Clifton Street is not so easily accessed these days by car, and so I'm sure that this will be putting some families off visiting the shop unless they live in the area. Nevertheless, they serve coffee, and so it doubles as quite a pleasant coffee shop. It's a while since I've been here so I don't really know how the new road layout is affecting them, and so my thoughts are merely speculative. The last time I paid them a visit was after a big shopping expedition to the centre of town with a friend and her two children. We used the idea of going to Candy Cave into bribing them into being tolerably behaved whilst we shopped for things that bored them to tears. It worked!

Firstly, I tend not to go to any Indian takeaway or restaurant that hasn't got a tandoor oven, (and this one clearly has, or else it would most likely be called something else...!?!). I love all the food that is made in a tandoor oven, with my particular favourites being tandoori chicken and nan bread. This option will set you back less than £6.00 and is the second reason why I like this takeaway so much... the prices are really competitive! Lastly, the portions are massive and so you really get value for money. I have, on more than one occasion, ordered one meal for two at Cottage Tandoori; something that is entirely feasible unless you are excessively hungry, or just plain greedy! (Although it has to be said that the food is very moreish!)
