Despite being housed in a fairly uninspiring building the pub is in a great location, right by a mooring spot on the canal so there are lots of lovely narrow boats to admire. Inside there is plenty of wood and beams with fairly functional but comfortable furnishings. No music but there is a pool table and a "bandit". We rocked up at about 3.30pm and it was busy but not overcrowded. While we were at the bar trying to choose form the selection of 6 cask ales a pie, smothered in pea,s came out of the kitchen which looked and smelled pretty good; with a choice of beef or pork at £2.50 a pie it looked a bit of a bargain. The other food on offer was a short selection of decent pub grub with even the most expensive dish leaving you with change from a fiver. Sadly we were under strict orders about getting home in time for us tea so we stuck with a pint and a packet of crisps. All the beer was excellent except for my pint of the local Anglo Dutch brew, The Aunt Agatha, was just not "right". However, after a quick word with the barmaid a very acceptable replacement pint of Yankee was on the bar and the Agatha was scrubbed off the blackboard. If you are feeling like something a little more exotic there is also a very good selection of reasonably priced bottled beer. The punters on this visit were a very friendly mixed crowd with no sign of any small children, I would guess that this is a pub which attracts a more adult following. No doubt, given its location, it will be heaving in the summer months. Patrick was bang on the money with this one and I will be returning when I next have the pleasure of a trip to West Yorkshire.

I like the place as its an old haunt of mine from days gone by, recently renovated it has lost a little of its old pub charm, but i'm sure the regulars were happy for the makeover and the more open feel it now has. Cute little outside patio with a few picnic tables nestled next to the cricket field make this a pleasant place to sit out and enjoy a nice cold pint of lager...

Despite being within the station, this fabulous venue retains all the vibe of a friendly local pub, so much so that you feel as though it's your very own local. But snacks were desired at this stage of the ale trail! For me, I opted for a Buxton Dark Nights, and at 4.6% it was fully flavoursome. The selection however was all too tempting, as they've many in store, including Brew Dog and Magic Rock. I had the pleasure of a couple of visits this Christmas period and on both occasions the pub was pretty full, with a good natured and varied crowd of beer lovers. It's not a large pub but there still seems to be plenty of seating if you look hard enough and are prepared to squeeze in amongst your fellow drinkers. It has a classic old school pub feel with lots of dark wood and simpl furnishings. The walls are covered with an interesting selection of railway and beer ephemera which is very fitting given it's connection to the Anglo Dutch brewery and its location on platform 2 of the train station. Excellent selection of cask ales which are well kept and lovingly poured. Always seems to be Black Sheep and a couple from Timothy Taylor available with the rest of the pumps given over to a quickly rotating localish selection. Staff are friendly, knowledgeable and more than happy to give you a recommendation and a wee taster before you buy. Like all decent pubs of this ilk my advice would be to have a couple if they have something on you particularly like as it will no doubt be gone on your return. For a London visitor the prices are great with pretty much all the ale in the £2.20 to £2.50 price bracket. No wonder these Yorkshire folk moan so much when they come down to the big city. Have never tried the food but I'm informed its pretty reasonable pub fare which will go well with your pint. I have never seen any ankle biters in here, not sure if they have an adults only policy, and this is not one I would recommend to the kiddy and buggy brigade. For the adult beer lover who is looking for a decent pint amongst a friendly, eclectic crowd and a welcoming atmosphere this is my top choice in the area. Cracking pub accessible from platform two at Dewsbury trail station. Excellent selection of well kept local ale. Mix of young and old beer lovers in an old school yet cosy pub. Only minor quibble might be that the music is sometimes a little on the loud side and I always feel vaguely rushed when that's the case, but like I say: a minor quibble in what is otherwise a very nice little local haunt.

Service was friendly and attentive and prices were reasonable.
