I made a reservation for 7am the day before and we ended up being the first guests of the morning, which got us an AMAZING table right by the ocean. We started with mimosas and a green smoothie, both really good. For breakfast, we ordered the braised short rib and eggs and the smoked salmon/lox with a bagel. Everything tasted fresh, well prepared, and honestly the entire breakfast menu looked good. The service deserves a mention too. Our host and the manager were both extremely welcoming, and paired with that oceanfront view, it's a really nice way to start the morning. As much as I wanted to give Splashes five stars, the food didn't quite have that wow factor for me. Nothing was wrong with it, it was all genuinely good; I just reserve five stars for the places that give me something memorable enough that I NEED to come back for it. Tucked in @surfandsandlaguna , @splashes_restaurant offers beautiful, ocean-side views of Laguna Beach, and an extensive menu of modern, elevated Californian dining with quite a bit of seafood inspiration. I was pleasantly surprised by how complex and well crafted their cocktails were, with my favorite being the gorgeous Blue Reef. In terms of food, you definitely can't go wrong with anything that you order, but my favorites were the lobster bisque and bluefin tuna crudo, which featured a very unique, Thai curry-inspired sauce that surprisingly paired perfectly with the fish. Whenever I come across any restaurant known for its views or ambiance, the food is often subpar so I didn't have high expectations coming here. But wow did that change my mind!! The margherita flatbread was a table favorite and approved by my Italian friends. We also loved the alaskan halibut tacos & crispy chicken sandwich. I booked this restaurant for an early Mother's Day celebration, and my mother was very pleased. First, the views this restaurant sits right by the coast beachfront and has amazing views. Secondly, the service and wait staff is impeccable. We received great recommendations, attentiveness, professionalism, and hospitality. The lobster bisque, Parkhouse rolls, octopus, the special of the day, which was tuna Hamachi. We also ordered the scallops, mushrooms, green beans, mashed potatoes and sea bass. The items that stood out the most were the lobster bisque. the Parkhouse rolls, the Seabass, the scallops and the Hamachi tuna. I was taken back that the octopus was fried and it was tough and had an interesting flavor. I'm used to octopus legs being grilled and tender, so I was quite disappointed with that. We also ordered a couple of cocktails that we weren't thrilled about. The flavors didn't work well together in the drink, but I did like how the glasses were ice cold I just wish the cocktails were more impressive. I feel like that's the gift and the curse. When you have a restaurant that is oceanfront. Typically oceanfront restaurants their food isn't that great because it doesn't have to be because of the ambience. The only place I've ever been where they had the oceanfront location and the food was amazing was Nobu Malibu specifically. Came here for lunch and absolutely recommend Splashes. The restaurant itself is on a lower level near the pool, but the ambiance is fresh and crisp, the service is solid, and the food was fantastic. We wanted to try the newly renovated Splashes Restaurant for ourselves. I'm giving it three stars because the ambiance is five stars, but the food is really one star. Our waiter was excellent and deserves five stars, while the manager gets one star, so I guess it averages out to three stars. I didn't read the reviews beforehand because I wanted to judge it for myself, but I agree with many other Yelp reviewers that the food just isn't very good. After lunch, I realized for myself that the food wasn't that good, and several other Yelpers mentioned that dinner was mediocre as well. This feels more like a place to come for a drink, relax, and enjoy the beach view. The reason I'm giving the manager one star is because I wanted to host my birthday dinner there - this was before lunch was served and reading reviews. The waiter suggested I request Table 33, which is in a beautiful area, but when I spoke with the manager, he refused to reserve it even though my dinner is still two months away. I don't know how they do business, but this doesn't seem like the right way to handle a customer request. If I come back--and I probably will, because the setting is beautiful--I'd likely order a small hors d'oeuvre and a drink. read more

We had such a wonderful experience at Splashes and can absolutely see why it has so many five-star reviews. A quick tip before you go: parking is either available on the street (if you're lucky enough to find a spot) or through valet for $15. The restaurant is located inside the hotel, and once you enter you'll take the elevator down to Level 1, where you'll be greeted with beautiful ocean views. We had a reservation and were seated very quickly. While we waited for our table to be cleared, Ava, our host, was so sweet and personable. She took the time to chat with us, shared some of her favorite menu recommendations, and when she noticed us unsuccessfully trying to take a selfie overlooking the water, she kindly offered to take a photo for us. It was such a thoughtful gesture that immediately made us feel welcome. Throughout dinner, Jesse was assisting our table, and he was fantastic. He always seemed to appear at just the right time without ever feeling intrusive. He was friendly, attentive, and genuinely helpful throughout the evening. Our main server, Carson, was equally amazing. He was welcoming from the moment we sat down, incredibly attentive, and you could tell he genuinely cared about providing a great dining experience. His recommendations were spot on, he checked in on us regularly, and made sure we had everything we needed without ever rushing us. The food was excellent. I absolutely loved the burrata salad, and my husband ordered the lobster bisque. At first, he thought the portion might be on the smaller side, but between the bisque and the bread, he ended up completely satisfied. Speaking of the bread--don't skip it! The butter, made with grass-fed cream, was absolutely incredible and made the appetizer even more memorable. Overall, Splashes exceeded our expectations. With recommendation from two friends (one being a local), we ended up getting a spot for late breakfast. All other times were not available. The day of visit, severe storm warning was issued so all the doors were closed, all the umbrellas were folded and getting ready for the storm. The views were amazing. Almost right over the water. The name Splashes definitely fits it. For breakfast, menu was simple and nothing really stood out. Short rib skillet anyone? I was expecting to pay more for the views but wasn't too exuberant . My drink wasn't good. Definitely needed a money back. Felt like it was diluted. Presentation was C rated and also glass had some juice that was spilled. Should have been wiped before serving. The restaurant of this caliber and price on high side, definitely needed an improvement. When one goes wrong, all else will look not as good as you had hope for. This place offers the best views on Laguna beach with the waves crashing against the restaurant! Absolutely stunning views from an oceanfront table around sunset! They serve amazing cocktails and just the venue makes it worth your while. The service is friendly and attentive. The hostess was particularly nice and moved me to a better table when I complained of the harsh sun directly hitting my seat. I decided to stay beyond the one cocktail I had planned for just because I was in love with the atmosphere there. I had a good overall experience. The food was delicious and the cheese board was especially flavorful and well put together. I'm a big fan of craft cocktails and have tried drinks at many different restaurants, so I had high expectations. While the drinks were okay, they didn't quite stand out to me, some of the flavors were a bit unusual and not really to my taste. We were seated near the bar area, which offered a great view and added to the atmosphere. Our server seemed to be handling a very busy section, so although he wasn't very attentive, it was clear he was doing his best under the circumstances. Splashes is an amazing spot if you want a great ocean view and a relaxed, upscale vibe. Valet was not expensive, and the staff was very friendly and helpful from start to finish. The best part honestly is the atmosphere. Sitting outside with the sound of the waves crashing while you eat is next level, and they have heaters that keep you warm so you don't even feel cold. Food-wise, it was good/OK overall, but there were a couple standouts. The short ribs were very tasty, and the sea trout was solid, very similar to salmon. If you're coming here for the service, the ambiance, and the environment, then this place gets a plus. It's a quiet little restaurant inside the resort hotel. We came here mostly for the view of the beach while eating. On that point, they get five stars. Overall, the food was okay, but obviously pricey, being that it's at a resort hotel. The octopus was overcooked. The outside was way too crispy and tough, but at least the inside was still a little bit tender, yet chewy. At least they didn't overcook the steak. It wasn't overcooked, but definitely not the best steak I've had. The fish tacos had a great big chunk of fish in them, and they were good, but nothing to write home about. I came here for my birthday and was pretty disappointed. The view is amazing but the service and food was okay at best. The pricing of the food definitely does not match the quality of food. I'm no stranger to spending $100+ per person on food but the food was very lackluster and lacked a lot of flavor. The service was also just okay, there's way better service at other places and they actually make you feel welcomed. When I first got there I noticed a waitress by the entrance who just ignored us. One thing I noticed is that even though it was my birthday, I never received a card signed by the staff. Every other table that came in for a birthday or anniversary received one except me. My boyfriend wrote it in the notes when he made the reservation and he mentioned it again when he called them. They did give us a dessert though. Overall I will not be coming back. Getting to the restaurant and seating: This restaurant is inside the Sand and Surf Hotel which has beautiful oceanside rooms. Your best bet for parking for this restaurant is street parking, however, they also have a valet. Walking into the hotel, there is a beautiful oceanside view great for pictures (especially sunset). The restaurant is located on the fifth floor, and you take an elevator at the end of the hall in the lobby to get there. This restaurant has plenty of seating all with great views. Honestly, sitting both indoor and outdoors is great at this restaurant as they all have great ocean views. For the outdoor seating there are two stories all facing the ocean. The inside has rooms and just seating facing the sky high windows that directly overlook the ocean. All 10/10 views. Service: They were honestly so kind! I went for a birthday celebration and my reservation was at 7pm. However, I arrived early and asked if I could change my reservation to an earlier time. I was able to get our table in just 10 minutes. For my birthday, they even provided a complimentary crème brûlée at the end of our dinner and provided a birthday note and the beginning of the meal which shows their care for customers! The crème brûlée was great- not too sweet, and the fruits weren't sour at all. Servers checked up on us a lot and ask how we were doing and if we needed anything else; great service overall! Food: I actually really enjoyed the food here. We only ordered two plates as we weren't super hungry, but the food surprised us! We loved the tenderness and softness of the chicken and the truffle and corn flavor in the other dish. I definitely will come back again just for the food. This only a 2 star review because Aaron our waiter was great. This restaurant has gone down hill since the remodel. The head chef was elevated to a new position and the food has suffered. The service is still top tier but the food is not. On top of that they've removed the olive tapenade and fresh bread they offered. When I asked this teenage boy In a suit names Julien (8 don't know if that's how he spelled it but he looked like it was spelled this way) he said it was to elevate the restaurant. Splash sits right by the ocean, offering beautiful seaside views. I'd heard about it for a long time, and finally went to try it yesterday. Parking is either through the hotel's valet service or on the street at $3.60 per hour. Service was beyond five-star--extremely warm and welcoming. Even though we only mentioned our dining occasion at the last minute, the staff surprised us with a signed greeting card and a complimentary dessert, which was such a thoughtful touch. As for the food, nothing was particularly amazing, but nothing was bad either--solid but unremarkable. The lobster bisque was probably the best dish, though quite pricey. Made a reservation for 4 a week early, called in and changed it to 5 a few days before; when arriving at restaurant had some trouble getting seated due to a miscommunication of the hostess not marking down that it was now for 5 and not 4. They were gonna try to reserve us for a table 2 hours later.. After some push back we were able to get seated in their first come first serve area. Kind of a rocky start but once the drinks and food came, it was a good time. Not ideal seating as 3 of us were squished on one side of the booth of a smaller table so I was eating on the edge of the table. Crab Benedict is great here as well as the calamari. One of the most special Christmas Eve dinners prepared by chefs- Ron Fougeray and Peter Lai I feel like they really went above and beyond for everyone this night it was raining, but it was still beautiful inside so Christmasy romantic the food was incredibly delicious. We highly recommend this restaurant to everyone. We started off with the Pullman loaf with Vermont butter, we enjoyed the Kampachi Crudo with Rose, apple salsa and Serrano oil(my favorite) the crispy Spanish octopus with charcoal, potatoes, corn, mousse, and crispy prosciutto so much flavor. The spiced liberty duck breast with caramelized figs and parsley roots, the braised short rib with squash purée was prepared perfectly I have to say the dessert was one of my favorites. It was there version of carrot cake with carrot, ice cream, and mango chutney. It was truly a Christmas delight. A light on the top of the hotel may help this problem to further enhance evening dining. The dining room could also use some soundproofing. It was difficult to hear the waitstaff and almost impossible to converse with your fellow dining partner due to the noise decibels. Attentive and knowledgeable waitstaff. We had the price fix 3 course dinner with wine pairing. Our favorites were the complementary lobster bisque and the scallop was perfectly seared. We also enjoyed the basque cheesecake with the crumbles and apples (though I think a raspberry sauce would have gone better with the cheesecake) and the complementary and beautiful birthday crème brûlée. However we felt that some of the flavors in the dishes didn't marry well together. The scallop dish- we enjoyed the poached pear, but with cauliflower and some of the vegetables in the sauce didn't combine well with the delicate scallop. I also did not care for the flavors in the crudo appetizer. I have had a fabulous raw fish appetizer previously at Contramar in MC. We did appreciate the chef subbed appetizer of the pork belly with lemon grass as my husband is unable to eat raw fish. The steak with the hasselback potato and red wine reduction was good. Although we requested outdoor seating, we were seated indoors--apparently the wait for outdoor tables was quite long, so we went with the indoor option. Unfortunately, a neighbor's balcony blocked the sunset view, but we still appreciated being near a window with a lovely beach view. We ordered the Tableside Lobster Bisque, Spanish Octopus, Corn & Crab Risotto, Meyer Lemon Fettuccine, Colorado Rack of Lamb, and Seared Alaskan Halibut. The food was decent--what you'd expect from a restaurant of this caliber--but the portions were very small. We finished everything but left still feeling hungry. Thankfully, we had birthday cake waiting at home. While the ocean view is definitely a highlight, the restaurant is a bit of a walk from the beach park, and considering the portion sizes and pricing, I'd probably think twice before returning. read more
