If you like a good selection of ales (chin, chin) or want somewhere to take nan for a fair roast on Sunday, you've found somewhere she'll love. Just don't expect to find the feeling mutual.

Getting here on foot from Bigbury on Sea or the other villages nearby is usually faster than driving, thanks to a network of public footpaths. So to the pub itself - it's really old with black wood beams, low ceilings and various nooks and crannies to hide it while you eat and drink. I enjoyed a really good plate of local sausages and mash along with a bottle of Cava and a dreamy yes DREAMY lemon and ginger cheesecake. Lots of reprints of press gang posters and similar from Nelson's time. I recommend finding the snug to eat in, right by the bar billiards table - the main dining room is nice enough but not special. Only ding is for the endless loop of a Phil Collins CD - I eventually blocked it out but it would have been good to have better music.

This change has brought a breath of fresh air, the welcome is again warm and friendly, the food exceptional, gone is that massive menu of countless items which were only possible with the help of a freezer and microwave, never a good combination! Now the menu is manageable and cooked to order by a more than competent chef, for the first time in a long while we see a pass with heat lamps to keep the food hot a sign of a chef who cares about his creations enough to serve them hot and fresh, he does not disappoint either it really is exceptional food, hot, fresh and well presented but more to the point it tastes amazing. The price, we'll give it a try and you decide, we think it offers fantastic value for money and is run by a team of caring professionals so it is back on our hit list "must do" places our only worry is that too many will agree and we won't just drop in but have to book. This is possibly the oldest inn in England, dating from 1028, however it started as a hostel to house the masons who were building the church next door. The menu is excellent and the food has never let us down. The menu is suplemented by an enormous daily specials board with the accent on fish and game. There is a good choice of real ales and some of the other fizzy stuff for people who have lost their sense of taste. The wine list is extensive and contains some really good, reasonably-priced stuff. As can be imagined in view of the age of the building, the inn has a great traditional feel. The latest landlord is a clone of his predecessors in that his welcome is warm and his patience long well Judi always changes her mind at the last minute! So on your next visit to Devon, set your satnav to this lovely old inn. It's popular, though, so I would recommend that you book.

Maybe we just have terrible pub food in the US, but I would consider this pub food gourmet and made with love. I had their fish and chips and it was a legit entire fish fried golden brown. I subbed onion rings for fries bc I honestly couldn't stomach another "chip" in the UK. I'm tired of fried potatoes, sorry. So this entire fish was not the frozen, breaded blocks of fish you get in America. I felt my coronary arteries occluding after eating 25% of my fish and after one onion ring so I had to tap out. But not before I devoured the mushy peas- bc it's almost like mashed potatoes, except green and not potatoes. Husband had the beef shin special which was delicious and odd (I can't say I've ever had shin served in the US... it doesn't sound appetizing but it's pretty tasty). We had drinks to start and let me just say I got schooled on proper gin drinking- I'll be sure to consume my gin and tonic in a bowl, double shot gin, and plenty of ice. I had a fantastic meal. A real food lovers pub with an excellent selection on the menu and quality food for the children as well. Chicken breast chunks instead of cheap processed chicken nuggets. The triple cooked chips are delicious!! and the fish just melts in the mouth! Very much worth the drive from Exeter.
