We were seated away from other diners tucked away in a corner which suited us and left to peruse the menu. Me and Mum shared the scallops and pork belly starter whereas my Dad went for the crab risotto. Having had a sneaky taste of the risotto it was amazing - super tasty but almost big enough to be a main! The scallops were beautiful and served with a tangy sauce and perfectly cooked pork belly. Very different to anything I have had before! For my main I opted for the beef and goats cheese burger complete with homemade fries. The burger was fantastic with the strong cheese accompaniment it was very tasty. We left stuffed and with the satisfaction of real value for money - this place probably wouldn't be on your radar but worth a visit for real good home-cooked food.

Vegetarian Thai menu is excellent Specials on a lunch time and Mon Wed evening which they can do as veggie if asked. Have visited regularly and always had an excellent meal. Everything freshly cooked. The best Thai Restaurant around but hidden away so don't tell everyone or I'll not be able to get a table! June 2011 Still going back about once a month and every time meal has been excellent. They have a new web site http://www.the-wheatsheaf-inn-newyork.co.uk/

They had short menu, but it looked mostly like traditional pub food. The greatest thing about it was it all was a reasonable price. I paid 3.99 GBP for a burger and a soft drink. The burgers come with a generous garnish of chips (fries). Being a pub, they have a large and full bar. It didn't look like there was outdoor seating, and the indoor seating wasn't extremely large. There were some "cheap" forms of entertainment, like a coin-operated video game and a dart board. The pub was, as it is in England of course, overflowing with English pride. There's a cash machine on site (not free withdrawl). The beef burger is huge! It has two patties, bacon and bit of real cheese. It was probably 3/4 of a pound of meat. It had a very beefy-bacony flavor, and it was on a very good bun. I opted to put the packet of barbecue sauce on it, since it needed a little more moisture. Food service starts at noon. The wait staff brings you the food, but you must order at the bar. The wait for the food was just about right, on the verge of being a little long, the staff look a little weighed down by the bar service. Be aware, this was at 2:00 PM. At later times, food service might be even slower because of increased bar patronage. The interior is nice. It's all wooden and pub-like. The bar is especially nice and antiquey. It looks to be made of aging cherry; this place doesn't look like it has changed in at least 100 years. Great value. Good food. Ima gonna have to give this-a-one five stars!

I asked for a discount off the bill because of the mix up and discussed this with the manager. He expressed that there wasn't an error on their part and refused to even give a 10% discount . So much for the customer is always right. I will never go to the Sportsman again.

This place is my parents' "local" and, without fail, I always visit when I'm home for the weekend…read more It's located in a small estate in North Shields and you'll have guessed by now that it may be the hottest place in town in fact its the opposite. However the reason why this place is so great is authentic charm it has about it - the type you watch on a movie based in the countryside where all the customers know each other... Owned by a friendly couple the pubs' selection of drinks is, as you would expect - fully stocked. With some good ale on tap (my Dad is very happy here) and wine by the glass there is something for everyone! Often accompanied by a number of light bites; such as pork pies and crisps it adds to the friendly atmosphere when the owners come round personally with the plates! I would say it never gets mega busy here but the chilled mood is great for a pre-dinner drink. The place is starting to get a bit old and worn - it is in need of a good re-furb...although saying that I'm not sure this place would have the same feel if they did! However a new carpet and seat covers wouldn't go a miss... The pub serves food during lunchtimes - offering a range of good home cooked favorites from prawn curry to chilli con carne! I've also eaten a fair few Sunday lunches here - it comes very close to my Mum's! Served with all the trimmings; Yorkshire puddings, mash AND roasties with seasonal veg. The best thing about this place is the endless amount of gravy they bring out! I am a huge fan of this place - it's got that old-style pub charm that is sadly lacking in the rest of Newcastle.
