Namely, restaurants, bars, and adorable shops like this, which is how we spent a lot of our leisure time back in the before times. Light House had hand sanitizer by the door and masks on all the employees, but other than those much appreciated concessions to COVID, it felt like a wonderfully normal shopping experience. This place is stocked with all kinds of high-quality home goods. They've got pottery, candles, appliances, textiles, wrapping paper, adorable baby clothes, toys, stuffed animals, cards, cookware, and a million other items my wife wants to buy (even though we probably only need a dozen of them). Her favorite things they have? Hand soap, laundry detergent, and dish soap in giant jugs so you can bring your own refillable containers and purchase by the ounce without destroying our environment. (We both hug trees on a regular basis.) My favorite things they have? A really interesting selection of books, and a comfortable couch I can sit and read on as my wife looks at everything else. This is a great little shop. Check it out.

There's a hodgepodge of home goods in here. Think kitchen items (food and food oriented, like recipe books), children's clothing/toys, bathrooms items (soap and shit) and other household odds and ends. Fellas: it smells really good and your wife/girlfriend will like it. My only gripe is that it can be irrationally expensive. I bought a kids stuffed animal for my son awhile ago which was around $40. It was hand sewn, however even so that's a bit steep. Think this as a place where you'll pay a bit more for quality goods and this won't bother you as much.

I'm especially fortunate to have a family lake house only 30 minutes from this extraordinary gem, which quite frankly competes with--and exceeds--the finest restaurants anywhere. That said...OMGD! I had the best-prepared, freshest swordfish of my life last night--served with beautiful, garden-fresh garnishes. And yes...in Sullivan County - well away from the coast! We also sampled the tuna crudo and East Coast oysters. You'd swear they'd just been pulled from the water. Everything was that fresh and insanely good. The roasted poularde was perfectly cooked, juicy, beautifully seasoned, and locally sourced--from the same farm that supplies Thomas Keller's restaurants, Per Se and The French Laundry. I've dined at both, and Black Walnut wins! Dessert? The panna cotta is the finest I've ever had. My longtime favorite (until tonight) is in a three-generation family restaurant in Valeggio sul Mincio, Italy. ...And the pavlova here is well...indescribable--it will simply stop you in your tracks. Think this was a one-off lucky night? Think again! We dined here last month and last summer with somewhat different menus, and food, experience and service each sitting hit all the same highest bars! Camille's secret is she's personally in the kitchen cooking every night, with her sous-chef by her side. Her small open kitchen is in the same room serving only max 40 lucky guests. Try finding that degree of experience, passion and continuity in such an intimate setting. Compare that to our typical world of corporately owned franchises, rotating chefs, and far larger capacity restaurants with variable service. So...forget the Hamptons. Black Walnut is a joy...make Calicoon your next destination.

It's similarly sized to other college town artist co-ops that I've encountered, but their inventory has some of the best variety of mixed media I've seen, at an appreciably high standard. Jewelry/accessories, apparel, pottery/glassware, wood carvings, prints/paintings, wreaths, and more home decor of all materials and dimensions. We found the perfect souvenirs to commemorate a group hike we did during our trip, after discussing the merits amongst ourselves between three artists who depicted the same trail in their own approaches: linograph vs photograph vs watercolor. We also purchased some crocheted plushies and a magnet, and my better half talked me out of a piece of enhanced folded book art. To respect the no photography policy of many of the artists, I'll just note that the website's artist portfolio just represents a drop in the bucket of what you'll find. We'll definitely stop in again for more unique wares whenever we pass through the area.
