    Loaded sorrel pesto rice
    Irene W.

A fantastic brunch spot that uses brown rice in their savory bowls. You feel full without being overstuffed. We got the loaded sorrel pesto rice with avocado, kale, and bacon. The kale and rice is so lemony and packed with so much flavor. We also got the "French toast" but this is not your average French toast. It's a creme brulee brioche that has been soaked in custard for 42.5 HOURS. Originally I thought that's how much this cost but luckily it's only $24. It was served piping hot but so juicy, crispy and fluffy. I've never had anything like this and it has to be the most unique French toast I have ever had. Absolutely worth it. Parking is simple and nice to walk around the neighborhood because you're going to want a little walk after this delicious meal. Ordering is at the counter and there was a line that took about ~15-20mins. They give you a number where they will bring your food out to you and they have a small indoor seating section and also a ton of outdoor seating in front of their restaurant or on the side in their patio. Dog friendly!

I've passed by Sqirl a few times only to see long lines. Thankfully we went early enough and only waited 5 minutes to order. The seating area is small, but it does have a patio which is nice. Parking might be tough but that's anywhere in LA. As for the food let's get into it: - Ricotta Toast w/ Strawberry Jam (8/10) delicious, the bread they used had good texture, and the ricotta portion was the right size. Would order again. - Fluffy Pancakes (7.5/10) Believe this is the most popular food item, as they always run out. I thought it was really good, but not the best fluffy pancake I've had. Still, I'd say it's worth trying and sharing with someone. - Iced Lattes (7/10) Probably just me, but I prefer my lattes to be on the sweeter side. Overall a good experience at Sqirl, and great customer service. Would I go again? Maybe

2 years since I've been here and this is still one of my favorite restaurants in LA! We waited in a line that started outside the restaurant. The line went by pretty slow and took about 30 minutes, but the wait is always worth it for me. I initially ordered the chicken tahini focaccia sandwich. Unfortunately, it wasn't available that day :( The employee said that out of their 4 sandwiches, they offer 3 of them on a given day. But I opted for the 1/2 & 1/2 bowl instead and was not mad about it. Any variation of the sorrel pesto rice is sooo delicious! There is a little bit of an acidic taste in the rice which I love. The textures in the bowl blend together nicely. I've actually never really eaten kale before, and the way it was prepared in this bowl made it very appetizing. It was dressed perfectly. This bowl was so filling that I couldn't even finish it! While it may seem impossible to find a table, one of the servers helps find and clean something for your party. The food service was a little bit staggered, with one of the bowls coming out much later than the rest of the food. Street parking can be difficult as it is very limited. There is a bathroom in the restaurant.

Sqirl absolutely delivered. I got the pesto chicken and the ricotta toast, and both were incredible!! the kind of food that reminds you why people wait in line for a spot like this. The pesto chicken was perfectly balanced, and the ricotta toast? They also give so much meat which makes it so worth it!! Will 100% be back next time I'm in LA!!

the ricotta toast definitely carried this whole meal. the ricotta itself was super duper fluffy and i loved that part so much. i would probably skip the apricot spread next time though because it was a bit bitter. the toast was a little dry, but it was also a thicccc piece of bread so i kinda get it. i did like the other jams though, i think it was strawberry and blackberry, and those paired way better. major chefs kiss to the caramelized vanilla latte. the vanilla bean flavor was really prominent and smooth, sooo good. the sorrel pesto rice was not it for me. the rice was kind of lukewarm and there was barely any pesto flavor. it mostly just tasted like dill. i usually like sour savory foods but this one just didn't hit. the hash was really good though. perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and the in house sauce had a nice smoky flavor that made it even better. not sure if i would reorder it only because i want to try other things next time. also it's an order first then find a table kind of place, just a heads up. overall some hits and misses but definitely worth trying for the ricotta toast and latte.

The line is usually very long, and the wait can take quite a while. It seems like the cashier is also handling bussing duties inside, which might be why it takes longer for orders to be placed. That said, the food and coffee is good, and I really like the outdoor seating area. If you don't mind the wait, it's still a solid spot to check out.

The name of this restaurant is pretty strange, but don't let that fool you. Like the saying goes, "don't judge the book by it's cover". Established in 2011 and still going strong! Love that:-) Yesterday, my son, one of his friends and myself decided to stop by at this lovely, quaint restaurant that I have heard of, but have never tried before. It's a bit pricy, but the benefits and quality of the food is totally worth the buck. Got a warm welcome from Danilo G and he took our order at the counter. After finding a seat in the somewhat medium size restaurant, another employee brought out our order. We all ordered different things. My son got the New School with extra crispy ham and strawberry/peach jam, his friend got the Buckwheat Pancake and I got an Avocado Toast (add fried egg). I don't know why they had to charge for the egg. We all loved our food and didn't get anything to drink besides water. We also shared the Double Stack Pancakes with maple syrup and butter. They have extensive menu options to choose from and are only open for breakfast/brunch/lunch and close at 4pm. Ambiance is comfortable, and chill. It's only street parking around here. We all enjoyed our food and looking fwd. to our next visit!

Sqirl has been around awhile (2011), but it took their recent foray into dinner service to finally bring me in. Well known for their breakfast and lunch offerings as well as their house-made jams, Sqirl is a very popular spot in Virgil Village. It survived a "Jam Gate" episode almost 6 years ago, and I remember chef/owner Jessica Koslow had a companion restaurant at the Santa Monica Proper Hotel for awhile. This slighty gentrified area can also be gritty, and parking is a real challenge. Sqirl is a combination restaurant, take-out place and market with 2 separate sections. The restaurant has a small indoor dining space (basically one communal table and counter seating facing the wall), front sidewalk seating and a small patio along the side. The setting sun was an issue for most of the patio tables during my visit. Daytime service may be fast-casual, while dinner has tableside wait service. The dinner menu is quite fun and unique. I ordered 4 dishes, and there are many more I'd like to try in the future. Here's what I ordered: 1) Chicken Liver $21. A pretty traditional chicken liver pate, but topped with a bright green compound celery butter and served with schmaltz-grilled bread (the same bread served with their bread service). So pretty and delish! 2) Agnolotti $26. Another pretty dish, beet-striped pasta filled with smoked beet with a ricotta whey butter sauce that I found bracingly acidic. Ate all the pasta, but not all of the sauce. 3) Chicken $38. When online food sites talk about the resurgence of ordering chicken for dinner, this dish is invariably mentioned. Kind of a take on Zuni Cafe in San Francisco's famous chicken with bread salad, Sqirl's version is a Koji-cured half chicken (boneless except for the wing) with bagna cauda sauce served over braised Swiss chard panzanella, with a charred lemon alongside. Very deep and savory, and a generous portion. 4) Onion rings $16. These and the creamed spinach are more recent additions to the menu. The rings have a masa battered and are served with an avocado dip that I found quite acidic. The rings were tasty but dark, fried a bit too long I fear. If I had room for dessert, I would have ordered the sticky toffee madeleines. Maybe next time. Overall a unique and tasty meal.

this review is specifically for dinner service.... And everything was honestly spectacular. Our order: - bread service w/ jimmy nardello butter & jam (I need this jam jarred for me to take home) - chicken liver mousse - squimps - caesar salad - chicken - steak - potatoes no. 1 (mashed potatoes) - caramel crème dessert - sticky tofu madelines honestly, everything was my favorite and my only complaint is that they could give another piece of bread with the bread service... for $10 there is enough butter + jam to suffice another piece. I also felt the steak main was small for $52 but it was so good & I really just wished there was more. Chicken was a great portion and nice big caesar salad, too. Bill came to $350 total w/ 20% tip for four & that included a bottle of wine, tea, coke and two desserts. Speaking of dessert, the sticky toffee madalines is now my favorite dessert of the moment. Absolutely incredible, I could've enjoyed this one all to myself. We needed three for the table tbh, it was that good. An absolute must order. The caramel creme was probably the most underwhelming of the night but I loved the ice cream it was served with. service was wonderful, I believe Henry was the name of our server and he was so great. Helped with the menu, attentive & kind but not over the top. I really don't have enough good things to say. Loved everything& already have my next reservation set in a couple weeks. I am so happy Sqirl has started dinner service and I will be back.

fell into the viral LA rabbit hole of going immediately anywhere that ends up #1 on a blog post for top 10 dining spots. as someone who's blood content makes up 75% sugar and is near diabetes, it's only natural for me to absolutely devour the SUPPOSED BEST COOKIE IN LOS ANGELES?????!?! obviously the blood sugar spike is still circulating in my system with how FREAKING DELICIOUS this cookie is. it's in the freakin name, the BROWN BUTTER is what makes this HUNKY CHUNKY BEAUTIFUL cookie just.... UGHGGHGHHH. it's so perfectly caramelized that i thought toffee pieces were in the cookie, BUT NAH JUST CHOCOLATE. and it's GOOD dark chocolate too that just pools so decadently with sea salt flakes. if a cookie doesn't have sea salt, grow tf up and add some salt ur missing out. anyways, i literally came back to sqirl TWICE that day bc they were out the first time at 2pm, and called back IMMEDIATELY in the evening when i suspected a restock of these addicting, heart attack inducing mfs. i always make fun of America for loving sugar as if im not the most sugar-infested implant in los angeles i kid u not. ANYWAYS THE LIST DID N O T LIE??!

Sqirl is one of the tastiest breakfast options in Silver Lake, as well as one of the most trendy and expensive. The lines here can get quite long so I suggest stopping in early. They have three different seating areas, one small area inside where you order, outside on the side of the building, and their largest seating area is directly out front on the sidewalk. Parking in this area can be a little bit tricky, there isn't a dedicated parking lot. It will be street parking only. The staff that we encountered was very friendly, but the ordering process is extremely slow, for some reason this line only crawls by, and everyone behind the counter taking orders does not seem to be in any type of rush. The menu does have a lot of great options on it. We started off with the Yogurt Parfait Bowl and we thought it was terrific. Everything was just really fresh and well balanced, and we were very happy with it. We also ordered the Ricotta Toast and jam and decided to do all strawberry because the other flavors did not sound nearly as interesting. This too was very good and I would get it for the strawberry jam alone. For my breakfast, I chose the Silky Soft French Eggs and really liked them. The goat cheese in the center is what made it for me and overall they was just really good. It takes quite a long time to be able to sit down to eat and the prices are high here, but the food is honestly really good and the staff is friendly, so I believe it is worth it if you're in the area.

Yummy food and great vibes! My friend and I shared the Long-Cooked Chicken & Rice Porridge and the Famed Ricotta Toast. The ingredients taste very clean and healthy. The rice porridge was very flavorful and I've never tasted a porridge like that before. The ricotta roast was amazing!! The toast was crunch and fluffy. And the ricotta was light and creamy and the jams were perfectly sweet. For drinks, I got a matcha latte and my friend got the strawberry matcha. They use Ippodo matcha, and it was strong! Was impressed Heads up- You have to order before you can get a table. If you try to save a table they'll make you move and order first.

I wanted to spend the day in LA with my friend and we decided to try out Sqirl for brunch because their menu looked super unique and interesting! I was overwhelmed with how many different things I wanted to try but ended up going with the vegetable omelette. I did not think to ask what kind of vegetables were on it and it ended up being mushrooms, only mushrooms, and lots of them. I like mushrooms but unfortunately I do not love them so that might have been my bad for not checking what might come on the omelette. If you are a mushroom lover, maybe you would have liked it but unfortunately it was not for me. As for my friend's meal, she got the Loaded Sorrel Pesto Rice. She said that she liked it but that it was pretty salty. The hash brown that we got to split was really good though!! Very crispy and tasty. Overall, we really enjoyed the vibe of this place and all of the staff were very friendly but besides the hash brown, we think that maybe we just ordered the wrong things for our first visit.

I'm only reviewing it now because I read and saw that it was closing (permanently?) at the end of March 2026, and I wanted to see what stories I had told in my review. Again, I really don't believe I didn't already review Taix, so I think the Yelp gremlins have been up to their dirty work. Even though our family long ago settled on calling it TAY (rhymes with "day"), my mom would sometimes confuse things by calling it TEX or TAYS. Then, when I was hanging out with the inimitable Dave Benitez last week, he called it tah-EE, and I was internally flummoxed but externally silent, because I didn't want to get into an argument about proper Taix pronunciation again, especially when I never really knew how to pronounce it. Taix was an L.A. mainstay and landmark, although its most recent location was its second; the restaurant had "only" been there since the 1960s. (It used to be near Unin Station.) It had such beautiful, elegant dining rooms. When I was a little kid, there were still plenty of oldish places in L.A. that retained some of their charm, but most were run down or at least looked old. Taix felt old, but it didn't look old. I imagine it looked very similar when it opened as it did when it closed. It was a kind of living, breathing piece of the past. It wasn't only from an earlier era, either. It felt like it connected that era with the present. When my parents were in their sixties, I used to joke that when the two of them went out to dinner here, the average age of diners dropped to seventy-eight. Taix always reminds me of formally dressed old men and their blue-haired wives. Now that my parents are in that demographic (but don't look anywhere near their age), it astonishes me just how old that original older crowd was. This was one of those places whose food I never really cared about. It was good. I don't remember what I liked or what I could even eat, but coming here was just an experience. It was also the site of a very memorable birthday party for my uncle, at which his brother-in-law gave a hilarious speech that we still talk about almost twenty years later and which gave said brother-in-law an in-family nickname. Taix plays a major role in The Madonnas of Echo Park, one of my favorite novels, and both the restaurant and that novel both remind me of the Echo Park of my youth, before gentrification did whatever it did and is continuing to do to that once proudly working-class neighborhood. So much of old L.A. is dead, and even the remembrances of the past are short-lived these days. (Bob Hope Airport is now officially Hollywood Burbank Airport, for example.) Taix is gone, to be replaced by overpriced, anonymous housing units. Could it return in a different form? Its farewell sign leads you to believe that it will. And maybe the native Southern Californian in me wants desperately to believe this. So rest up, Taix. We'll all really need a change and a return to normalcy in 2029, whatever that means for the City of Angels.

My friend paid $8.50, same attendant guy decided for me it would be $10 instead, and when I asked why there was a difference in price, he just yelled at me to go park in the street if I didn't like it. Go off queen, get your money I guess lmao. Honestly kind of a funny scam to run on a closing establishment Edited to add for owner: Good to know! They are definitely blaming the restaurant for it. They're wearing Taix badges and making up information about Zelle/Venmo quotas set by ownership, so you may want to have a talk with them. I have a first and last name from Zelle if you need it

The flavors of the burger with the meat, sauce, cheese and pickles pair well together. I do think some parts of either my bun or patty were a bit burnt and you could definitely taste that. For dessert, we got the bread pudding which was AMAZING! Would definitely recommend, it reminded me of a chocolate chip cookie but pillowy and delicious!

The space feels warm, intimate, and effortlessly cool without trying too hard. It's one of those restaurants where the lighting, music, and overall energy become part of the experience. The fire-driven cooking really stands out, and everything felt thoughtful and well executed. Service was welcoming and paced nicely throughout the meal. Definitely the kind of spot that makes you want to linger a little longer at the table.

They seated a bunch of people before me, but I ended up being first on the waitlist. It took maybe 30 minutes to get a table. I highly recommend making a reservation! Service was really good. The host was very friendly and handled the long line very well. It seemed like all the servers were hands on and looked out for the entire dining room. I had a different person refilling water, clearing old plates, and bringing new utensils. They were all nice. The menu was ok because it listed a bunch of appetizers and sides but only three mains (fish, pork, beef). The dessert is also included at the bottom. I went with the cornbread, rice, and beef ribeye. -Edna's Sour Milk Cornbread $21 - so buttery, so good. The honey was delicious. This is the "must order" dish here. -Carolina Gold Rice $31 - high price for small portion size. Too salty. -Beef Ribeye $149 - pretty good. They cut the beef into slices. They also included bone marrow in the bone, grilled lemon, and sea salt. (We had a kinda funny issue with the ribeye, but the server so kindly helped us.) Good luck finding street parking. Some outdoor seating available. Bathroom is in the back. I would visit again!

Definitely more hipster/modern vibes but you are in Silver Lake after all. Our server had great recommendations and the staff was friendly. Highly recommend the Turkish Eggs ($21) for a light but filling meal! Also ordered the Cacao-Date Mocha ($7.75) but it just tasted like a regular mocha. Overall great brunch place with friends who are interested in the hipster/art-hoe vibe :)

It felt more like going into a wine shop than a restaurant. Maybe it was an off day but even the staff were very quiet and not as inviting. We were seated in the back patio are. We got there at 8:30, we ordered some wine around 8:45 and they took our food order so around 9:05 our starters came out along with "kitchen is closing do you need anything else?" We felt very hurried to finish up and leave. The hummus and pesto was delicious and so was the roster chicken. We loved the Japanese sweet potatoes. The herb sauce was great on top. When the bill came out oh was over $100 over. They had changed an extra bottle of wine, one extra started and 5% for their insurance. And the staff adjusted it but even after adjusting the bill the first time it still was wrong and had to be sent back again to get readjusted. Again maybe it was an off day.

My date told me it used to be an old fire station from the 1920s, which definitely adds to the vibe. The whole place just feels really cool and unique, and I thought it was honestly so pretty. We went on a Wednesday night so it was basically empty idk if it's usually busy or not. The food was good, nothing super groundbreaking or out of the ordinary for me, but this is definitely more of a vibe spot in the best way possible. Our server was also really sweet. She noticed my nails were long and helped me out, plus gave me a really good drink recommendation, I think it was some kind of strawberry daiquiri, and I loved it. Overall, really good experience and I'd definitely come back.

Edendale is tucked away on a very busy street with limited street parking and even in the surrounding neighborhood we found it tedious with the amount of tow away signs, so plan ahead. Our group of four went on a Wednesday night so it wasn't busy at all, we decided to sit in the front outside area. Music playing, low lights, candles and greenery. Which be careful if you sit near the plants, lots of spiders and ants during our meal (yikes.) Service was great. Server was very chill and made sure to check in multiple times. Food was standard and drinks were good but nothing life changing. All in all what a cool space, Edendale being an old firehouse makes the ambiance really unique. There is a couple outside areas, one out front and closer to the back near the restrooms. Lots of options to sit inside or outside. Wouldn't necessarily go for the food but a very nice place to catch up with loved ones over a candle lit cocktail hour.

Sticky Glazed Pork Shank 10. Blackberries & Butter Montamore Cake Complimentary chocolate ice cream with chocolate syrup and sprinkles for the birthday boy! My favorites: 1. The blueberry cornbread was served with the best honey butter and blueberry jam. 2. The goat curry was not gamey. The meat was tender and the curry was mild in flavor. 3. The salmon was served with a crispy skin. The celery and peanut salad complemented the salmon well. 4. The pork belly was full of flavor. It was served with glass noodles. 5. The HIGHLIGHT of dinner was the pork shank. It was served with a strawberry salad, cucumbers, hoisin mayo sauce, hot mustard sauce, naan, and lettuce. The meat fell of the bone. This is a MUST try. For dessert we ordered the blackberries & butter cake. It was served with a frozen blackberry basil jam which had the consistency of a sorbet and basil whipped cream.
