I was transported back to dinners from my childhood in New Delhi. I appreciated how indulgent the experience felt. The velvet interiors in jewel tones, the well staffed team who were attentive but not overbearing, and the beautiful presentation of each dish - the experience showed the owners had invested whole heartedly in customer experience, unlike some ethnic food places that do the bare minimum. Everything here was clean, elegant, thoughtful. Now, let's talk about the food. The appetizer (beet croquette) was excellent. The usual trap with kebabs, especially vegetarian ones, is that they feel dry. This didn't. We also got paneer pasanda, which was not my favorite. It was deep fried and turned rubbery. I'm more a fan of soft paneer that melts in your mouth. The lachha paratha was good. The item I'm still thinking of is their amazing mango lassi, which is like a drinking version of srikhand! Probably my new favorite Indian restaurant!! I've come here now twice, once for lunch and once for dinner. The interior has a bunch of tables, and sitting out on the patio is also delightful. Over my visits, I've ordered the palak paneer, butter chicken, chicken korma, the crispy cauliflower, and the kale and sakarkandi chaat. The chaat was incredible - I ordered this on the server's recommendation and probably could've eaten many more bowls of it! It has kale that's been battered in a flavorful layer and then deep fried until it's crispy, along with sweet potatoes and the perfect balance of sauces. Really to die for! The crispy cauliflower also hits. It has a spiced batter that coats the cauliflower and makes every bit delicious. The star of the mains may well have been the palak paneer! I feel like it's sometimes hard to find a palak/saag paneer that is flavorful and thick. This was one of the best I've had. It was super creamy, rich in flavor, and had a good ratio of palak to paneer. The special butter chicken has a nice smoky flavor that distinguishes it from other butter chickens. The shahi murgh korma was also fabulous. I've really enjoyed their garlic naan, which is charred well and fluffy. Their dinner service was a bit slow on the Friday evening we went, but we really enjoyed sitting on the patio on a beautiful night so we couldn't complain too much. This place has been on the top of my list to try for a while and I was finally in the area, so I decided to make the 20 min walk to Ssaanjh. The restaurant offers a beautiful ambiance and you're warmly greeted by their wonderful team as you walk in. The menu boasts unique speciality dishes that you won't find in most places. The owner, Manju, curated a blend of flavors for me to try that paired perfectly together. This truly elevated my experience. I enjoyed every dish here. That said, the food itself was... fine, but not standout. We spent about $60 on one appetizer, one shared entrée, and two pieces of naan, which feels a bit steep for what we got. I also left hungry. Highlights: The dahi puri was the star of the meal -- super refreshing, flavorful, and a perfect bite between richer dishes. Saanjh is supposedly one of the better Indian fine dining restaurants in Boston. The ambiance didn't feel upscale and was like an average Indian restaurant. Seating was crammed and there is barely any space for high chairs. In general the food was good but there were some items that we had high expectations for like Jaipuri Laal Maas that didn't turn out to be good. The Laal maas is nothing like I have had in Rajasthan. We enjoyed the appetizers like Malai Tikka and Pesto Paneer tikka (even though there was barely any Pesto in it and it mostly tasted of coriander). I think the Lamb Shank Nihari was really delicious! The drinks were underwhelming - especially the Aampanna Illusion. I also felt the staff in general was not very accommodating because we asked them if one of the mocktails could be cockified and they said they will have to ask the Bartender. How difficult is it to add a liquor to a mocktail?! Another time, one of my friends asked if they could tone down the spice level for her spicy margarita and after some back and forth they sent a replacement which wasn't any better. Yum what a great addition to Brookline! Ssaanjh is the newest Indian restaurant in the area, located right on Beacon Street. There's lots of street parking and both indoor and outdoor seating for the summer! We ordered a bunch of drinks--their masala chai is lovely and mango lassi was a hit! For apps we LOVED all of the chaats--my favorite was the pani poori which comes in a beautiful tray with individual little cups to pour into your poori. We also tried the samosa chaat which was delicious, it comes with two samosas and lots of chickpeas/sauce. We shared two orders of the garlic naan which was perfectly fresh and garlicky (although each order is a little small--we def needed two orders for the four of us). We had the butter chicken and the paneer pasinda which were both tasty. Overall a really great meal with quite reasonable prices--our total even with drinks and more food than we needed came out to $28/person. Will definitely be back! read more

Great addition to the Greater Boston food scene! This general area does not have many Indian restaurants, especially ones that are slightly more upscale with a modern spin on their dishes. The interior is lovely, a great place to catch up with friends or coworkers. Dahi Puri was great! Crunchy, creamy, and refreshing at the same time, loved it! Also can't forget the Kale and Sakarkandi Chaat, which was a great combination of crispy, sweet (sweet potatoes) but also refreshing pop from the pomegranates. Mango lassi was mango lassi with a slight twist to it, unsure if it had some nutmeg or some other spice to it but was not specifically the biggest fan of this added spice to my mango lassi (that I get basically every time I visit an Indian restaurant). Though, the main reason this review gets 5 stars--is the Ssaanjh Special Butter Chicken entree. Which was honestly AMAZING. Best butter chicken I've had. The chicken was extremely tender (same with the lamb in our other entree too), and the blend of the chicken and butter chicken curry sauce just melts in your mouth. The sauce is super creamy, unlike what I've had before but in a good way. This was a cozy place in Brookline. It's an Indian fusion place with interesting options. It's mostly Indian food with a modern American twist. We ordered Kale and Sakarkandi Chaat - this was an amazing appetizer. Crispy Crunchy with a delicious sauce. I consider this an elevated version of veggie pakora but less greasy and more flavorful. I highly recommend. Also the presentation is impressive. For Entrees we ordered: Farm Fresh Vegetables Biryani- this was delicious but I felt it lacked the Farm Fresh part. The vegetables were just carrots, corn and peas. It also had rose petals on it which was special and eye catching. Jaipuri Lal Masa - Lamb in red chilly sauce. This was total yum! The lamb was melt in your mouth tender and the sauce is so flavorful. It is a winning dish, but not as spicy as I was expecting. We ordered medium spicy but it was more like mild spicy. Next time we'll ask for hot. Really I think they should just make the dish as intended. We also got dessert. They had one dessert that was a combination of Gulab Jamun and Rasmalai, in a tart. Very creative. Again the presentation was impressive. I liked it better than Gulab Jamun because it wasn't as syrupy. And the fragrant cream was a nice balance. The service was great. We've been wanting to try out Ssaanjh ever since they opened and finally got the chance! It looked like they had reservations for all their tables, but we were able to get seated nonetheless without a reservation. Our server was friendly and personable, he made sure we were well taken care of. I did feel we were a little underdressed as the decor inside seemed more upscale. They have a decently sized menu with a lot of options, as well as a full bar and some yummy cocktails to choose from. We tried a nonalcoholic juice (that I forgot the name of) which was soo delicious and fruity, it was essentially a fizzy tropical drink! First we tried the fire roasted eggplant, sooo delicious and creamy, the perfect dip for our garlic naan! I really enjoyed eating this eggplant dish with everything else, especially rice (which we got complimentary refills of!) We also tried a bone in chicken dish which we hadn't tried before, and the chicken was cooked so thoroughly the meat fell clean off the bone, along with chunks of bone! Visually, I think the dishes looked stunning and were plated well. I enjoyed the experience here, but taking into account the price, I'm not sure if the dishes we ordered were worth it. Probably one of my favorite Indian restaurants in the area! They offer a modern take on Indian food and drinks, along with having a beautiful space for friends and family to come together and eat. Got to try their lamb kadai, goan shrimp curry, chicken biryani, garlic naan, sesame naan, mango lassi, and the Ssaanjh Dessert Pot. Honestly, everything was delicious. If I had to choose just one to highlight, their lamb kadai is one I would get again and again -- I have ordered it every time I've visited. Their dessert pot also was delicious -- I'm not exactly sure if they use saffron ice cream or something similar, but it definitely adds to the lovely chocolate dessert (and it's also super cute and aesthetic). tl;dr decent food, great drinks in a convenient location A friend and I went to Ssaanjh on a Friday night without a reservation after hearing about it online. The restaurant was half full when we arrived around 6:45, but by 7:30 it was entirely occupied. The restaurant is somewhat narrow but very colorful -- the front is a bit crowded with tables and a coat rack and podium, but otherwise there's enough space for diners. We ordered the Dahi Puri as an appetizer alongside a Salt Lassi and Chai Martini. The drinks were excellent, and the chai martini in particular was better than most caffeine/martini combos I've had in a long time. The Dahi Puri was decent -- the savory masala felt lacking, and it otherwise felt like whipped butter cream filling the puri instead of the thicker spiced Dahi we were expecting. For mains, we got the Paneer Pasanda and Baingan Bartha at a medium spice level with one garlic naan (rice was complimentary). All the dishes were decent, but it felt like only a mild spice level was used. The paneer pasanda also tasted a bit sweeter than expected, but it was still a good dish. Next time more spice may have to be requested. Service-wise, at first the staff seemed frustrated by the fact that we'd asked to be put on a waitlist to get a table without a reservation, and at the end of the meal it took about 20 minutes for them to get the bill. I'm willing to cut them some slack here given that it's a newer restaurant and they may not have streamlined busy night operations yet. Overall, the food was decent, but it feels like there's room for improvement. I don't want to knock Ssaanjh too hard because it's a newer restaurant and the menu is meant to showcase fusion dishes (as opposed to classics). The drinks were also excellent too. I could tell they were nervous since this is a new place but they did great. The drink I got was really tasty with the right tanginess. The dahi puri was okay. I felt like I got a lot of the mousse flavor than the content of the puri. The crispy cauliflower was one of my favorites. It was spicy and the sauce paired really nicely. The chicken 65 was okay. It has a similar flavor profile to the crispy cauliflower and very juicy chicken. I did wish the crispy cauliflower and chicken 65 had more quantity but was still good. For mains we got the jackfruit kofta, murgh vindaloo, and spinach corn and ricotta dish with garlic naan. The naan was made perfectly. Finally found the best place for delicious butter chicken in the Boston area! Food: MUST GET- The Ssaanjh special butter chicken is the star of this restaurant. The tandoori chicken has a smoky flavor that pairs perfectly with the creamy buttery sauce. This dish tastes exactly like authentic butter chicken you can find in London. Other dishes we got: Apps: Baked malai tikka- cooked to tender creamy perfection, could have more spice Achari salmon- all their meat dishes are high quality. This one tasted like a regular salmon, slightly fishy taste, with a little bit of seaweed salad on top. Could have more Indian spices and have nori strips instead to enhance the fusion flavor Kale and sakarkandi chaat- SO good! Reminded me of contemporary/fusion Indian food you actually get at upscale restaurants in India (other than asking you how spicy you want your food -- I'd prefer the chef's recommendation, which wasn't an option).
