Honestly, it was one of the most moving and beautiful services I have ever attended. Although it is a small church (built in the 1870s), it has a dedicated and friendly congregation. The sanctuary is beautiful with pillars, and stained glass windows, and old Victorian chandeliers. There is a huge pipe organ (and an organist who knows how to play it!!) Although I am an official member of a big Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, I love going to St. Matthews in Hoboken...as it always has the BEST, most gorgeous MUSIC. Tonight the sacred music dated from the 9th century. A solo violinist played "The Crucifixion", Sam Barber. A male vocalist sang the Adagio, Samuel Barber. There was an absolutely amazing soprano who sang the Negro Spiritual "Calvary." Then they did "The Solemn Approaches" circa 9th century, led by the small but talented choir. If you are looking for an Easter week service that is meaningful, and has beautiful music and litugy, with a great pastor, and a truly gorgeous, historical setting, (and a small but friendly & dedicated congregation), look no further than St. Matthew Trinity Lutheran in Hoboken. Church is located at the corner of Hudson Street and 8th street. There is street parking. You can also get there by the No. 126 bus from the Port Authority bus terminal in Manhattan OR the PATH Train (just walk up Hudson Street 8 half-blocks (or along waterfront) to the church), Can also take the ferry from Manhattan, or light rail from elsewhere (like Edgewater or Jersey City) to the church. Join us for services on Easter. You will leave feeling moved, refreshed, and spiritually & emotionally uplifted. (You don't need to be "Lutheran" to attend. (I was raised Presbyterian...) Also, the church is VERY inclusive (so background, orientation, race, housed or homeless, ethnicity--ALL are made to feel welcome..) And if you love good music...and a very tasteful, moving spiritual service--you will not be disappointed. The people who put together the services really KNOW how to utilize the music, lighting, mood, liturgies, and the church's architecture to create a worshipful and amazing atmosphere--all from the heart.

Sunday's don't feel complete if I don't make it there for service. Hoboken Grace truly loves and cares for this community. The amount of time and effort they put into preaching the word of Jesus and showing love to others, not just in church, but outside of it, is fantastic and wholesome. I've found forever friends through my dinner group and the community service events we do & I have ultimately found place where I can feel the love of Jesus like never before. While I visited my friend or did work in this part of the country, I've walked by this church many times but never went inside. On this fateful day, the stars finally aligned, and Lord did I and our country needed some spiritual holiness in our respective lives. Would St. Nicholas Church be a suitable place of worship to resurrect my soul and realign my chakras!? EXPERIENCE As was usually the case whenever I visited a different parish other than my own, I had to get accustomed to some of their nuances (nothing major, I can attend all services at my parish on almost autopilot). The service lasted about one hour and was relatively standard. Being the relative newcomer/outsider, I noticed most if not everyone knew each other who was at the service which was very cool. I rarely experienced that at my own parish! I felt safe, welcomed, and left a slightly better person than when I entered - praise the Lord! PURCHASE Offertory ($10.00): As I always joked to myself, I added more to my good karma credit; bless you, Lord! SERVICE Aside from the actual Easter service itself and the ushers who collected money during the Offertory, there really wasn't much else (I appreciated that my parish also accepted electronic payments). There weren't any welcomers outside of the church, etc. Things appeared to run smoothly - amen! PARKING (FREE; N/A this instance) This was an easy flat 10-minute walk from my friend's place. Otherwise, they had a medium-sized private lot, and there appeared to be plenty of spots along the main drag of Central Ave. and all surrounding roads - 'nuff said. Minimal muted natural lighting came through the many stained-glass windows and doors while bright decorative hanging electric ceiling lights filled in the rest. From the…read moremoment I stepped inside, I was overwhelmed by a deep, calming peace, like I was finally somewhere truly touched by God's presence. Before attending, I knew some of the history and teachings of Orthodox Christianity, but actually being at the church moved me in a way I didn't expect. It genuinely made me want to cry tears of peace and happiness. This is my first time ever walking into an Orthodox Church, and honestly, I didn't know what to expect. But what I found was so much more than I imagined. The iconography inside is some of the most beautiful I've ever seen. Each image tells a story that draws you closer to God in a way words can't. Even coming alone, I never once felt out of place. I feel truly seen, loved, and accepted here, not just by the people, but in a way that feels like God is personally reaching out to me. Every service fills me with hope and comfort, and it's a peace I've been searching for my whole life. I also come to the Orthros service every Sunday, which has deepened my connection and understanding even more. Fr. Nick is amazing and very welcoming. His church feels like a home and he feels like a spiritual father to me. Becoming a catechumen soon means everything to me because I finally feel like I'm stepping into something real, something holy, something that's healing my soul. If you're young like me and you're interested in converting to Eastern Orthodox Christianity, or you're searching for a place with the fullness of God, Evangelismos Greek Orthodox Church is that place.
