Went on a retreat here with my church group this past weekend. The house on the property we stayed…read morein was recently renovated and very cozy. Everybody in my group got their own room. Brother Dan brought us our meals each day, he was very friendly and welcoming. Praying with the monks in the chapel was a very moving experience. They also have outdoor walking trails if you want some quiet time with nature. There is a gift shop on site too. Would definitely come here again.

Located in the center of the historical town of Plymouth, Congregation Beth Jacob has the…read moredistinction of being the oldest continually operating synagogue in Massachusetts. The synagogue building was erected in 1913 and was originally an Orthodox schul with a balcony for the women congregants. CBJ became a Reform synagogue in the 1960's, and Rabbi Lawrence Silverman became its rabbi in 1975. As the congregation grew, there was a need for a larger space to accommodate high attendance at High Holy Days services, community Bingo nights, community Passover seders, and large social gatherings, and CBJ purchased a former Methodist church on Court Street to serve as its community center. This building served for many years until it was eventually sold to the Town of Plymouth and is now operating as The Spire Center for the Performing Arts. CBJ is a small congregation, presently about 80 families located in the Greater Plymouth area. We pride ourselves on our "haimishe," friendly atmosphere, welcoming new residents to the area, as well as tourists who are visiting Plymouth. Our members include families with lifelong affiliations with CBJ, many being descendants of its Founders. While the majority are retirees and empty-nesters, we also have a growing number of young families with children who are enrolled in CBJ's outstanding Beit Sefer (Hebrew School) program. After Rabbi Silverman retired at the end of July, 2021, after 44 years of devoted service to CBJ, Rabbi Estelle Mills became our rabbi. Although the synagogue building was closed to in-person services because of the Covid pandemic in March of 2020, CBJ has continued to conduct weekly Friday evening Shabbat services by Zoom, and Rabbi Mills has proven to be a technical wizard, creating PowerPoint slides for inspiring readings and prayers and sharing them with our minyan-goers. She incorporates beautiful music videos into our services, introducing us to new melodies that keep our services fresh and exciting. Her D'var Torah for the week is always relevant to current events while reinforcing the message and substance of the parashah. Significantly, Rabbi Mills has introduced us to the Reform practice of reading from the Torah at our Friday evening services - something that we had never done before. She includes congregants in the service, inviting selected people to light the Shabbat candles, do readings, share special blessings that we have enjoyed over the past week, and to actively engage and participate in the service. It has changed a bit and grown (with the school and library across the street) but is still a welcoming place to all I remember it to be. Be wary that although there is parking there isn't a ton.

The sanctuary is a serene place to meditate or pray, and my wife spent some time here over the years. This came with some degree of bewilderment from the monastics who live here, not at all used to white folks showing up. There's also a bit of a language barrier, as the congregants are all from Quincy's Vietnamese community, and most of the monastics are monoglot Tieng Viet speakers.

They show love, compassion and open up their hearts and their homes for all the brothers and sisters in Christ. My fiance even gave his heart to the Lord at one of their services. We are lucky to have many architectural treasures in the historic and very New England town of…read moreHingham, Massachusetts but the Old Ship Meetinghouse is a particular gem and should be on a list of places you might want to visit when you're in town. Old Ship was built in 1681 and it's the only structure in America that's been in continuous use as a church for all that time. It's the only 17th century Puritan meeting house left in the U.S. It's currently in use as a Unitarian-Universalist church. Old Ship was built in the English Gothic (Neo-Gothic) style of the 17th century and is a somewhat imposing structure sitting atop a hill overlooking pretty Main Street. (This is the very same Main Street that Eleanor Roosevelt called "the prettiest Main Street in America" and is worth its own visit) Just wait however until you step through the doors of the church. I've yet to meet anyone who wasn't absolutely amazed at the beauty and incredible craftsmanship of the interior. What will catch your eye instantly is what is known as a Hammerbeam ceiling. This ceiling is nothing short of magnificent with its open bare timbers constructed of huge oak beams. It's said to look like the upside down frame of a ship and indeed it does, hence the name: "Old Ship". Going inside is really to take a giant step back in history. Whenever I'm in there I feel almost overcome by the simple yet jaw-dropping beauty. The pulpit is quite grand sitting way up high at the front of the church with a curved staircase leading up to it. There is a second level balcony surrounding the main part of the church which is a good place to go for an on-high perspective of the interior. Chances are good that you'll be fascinated by the rich history and you'll likely sense, as I do when I'm here, the indomitable spirits of those Puritan first settlers who were determined to see this church built, coming here as they did for religious freedom. Some of the other original meetinghouse furnishings are still used and perhaps the most special of those is the Christening Bowl. It's thought to have been made before 1600 and it was brought to Massachusetts from those original settlers from Hingham, England. (The town of Hingham, Mass still shares an on-going relationship to this day with the people in Hingham, England.) Old Ship Meetinghouse is set in front of the Old Ship Burying Ground, also known as Hingham Cemetery which I have reviewed previously. It would make for a lovely afternoon to visit Old Ship Meetinghouse and then take a stroll through the historic cemetery. . Better yet, in September when the regular church season resumes after the summer hiatus, come on a Sunday and take in the unique Unitarian-Universalist service so that you can sit in appreciation of the beautiful, antique church surroundings while perhaps being inspired by its current day use. You will be most welcomed to do so by all who are there.
