Obtuse and treating me like a scheister I wasn't trying to sound like this, there's natural panic in my voice because of the emergency situation I've endured these past 5 days. He said I should contact a church that's closer to my community in Chicago because he couldn't help at all. When I responded, "but Chicago is heartless, which is why I have contacted a church in the 'burbs instead." He snapped back, "CHICAGO IS NOT HEARTLESS! Chicago is NOT heartless. Nope, it's not. No. You're wrong..." Stupid me, he's from Winnetka and has never endured hardship before apparently.

Over the years it's had a lot of changes, one of them being that the Church is now fenced in. Pretty indicative of the world we live in unfortunately. As far as services go, I believe they still offer them in Spanish and English. It's always very crowded on Sundays but they have a parking lot down the street. It's not exactly in the neighborhood, but it's still not too far away south of Lawerence on Austin Avenue about 2.7 miles away. Like I said not too far away. St Bellarmine is a newer church completed in 1969 and is a more contemporary style then Queen of All Saints which is actually a magnificent Neo gothic basilica that we normally attend, but then they don't have a Sunday mass. Anyway back to St Robert Bellarmine it's much more contemporary architecture w/laminated wood beams spanning up to a peak w/a skylight that runs from a low point in the back to the peak in the center of the church thento a low point in the front by the alter. There are smaller beams that run perpendicular to the large laminated beams that make up the structural support of the roof. There are wood planks (cedar?) that span between the smaller beams and make up the interior underside of the roof. Overall it's a very aesthetically well designed church. I was looking up at the ceiling and structure admiring it. (The parishioners probably thought I was looking up to the heavens lol). Nice church, but not as nice as Queen of All Saints, but I'm a little biased.

My son had reached his 13th birthday, and there was no way I could afford it. Knowing how important this was for a boy reaching his 13th, the Hertz's made sure he had a bar mitzvah at the shul and a lovely kiddish afterwards Also, they gave my son a gift of a tefillin and a personalized yarmulke. This is a wonderful shul and great people work here including Rabbi Hertz!

Since my fiance and I aren't…read moremembers of a temple, she let us know that we could get tickets to Sukkat Shalom's high holy day services by contacting the executive director. Since they don't sell their tickets, like most temples, they do ask for a donation in exchange for the tickets. But, giving what you can seems much more reasonable than being asked to pay a set price. (I don't even want to get started at why temples sell tickets for services on the holiest holidays . . .seems so . . . not right). Anyhoo, we went to their Rosh Hashanah service this past Saturday and over all we had a positive experience. For some reason, I was expecting it to be more of a diverse congregation and so I was really disappointed to see that my fiance was the only nonwhite person in the room. In terms of looking for a congregation to join, that is a major issue for us. But, I guess they are diverse in that they are very accepting of interfaith families. I guess it just depends what sort of diversity is most important to you. But, over all, the service was very nice. The rabbi gave an interesting sermon on biblical and modern parent child relationships. He used the example of Paul in Chorus Line. While he didn't come right out and argue for gay rights, there was definitely a message that parents should accept their children no matter their sexual orientation. I definitely appreciated that. There was lots of music and the shofar blower was awesome.

It is more of a modern style but very lovely. My daughters were both baptized here. The priests have always been great. I used to sing in the choir at 10:30 masses but just eventually now it is too difficult to make it to practices or even get to mass on Sunday! But it is a great church, school, and parish!
