1 st UU of Worcester is one of the larger UU churches in the area. It's size may play into feel…read morethe visitor experience. First of all the role of greeting visitors appears to be assigned to the greeters and pastor. Expect polite nods from everyone else. The music was professional and soothing. The readings helped me put the experiences of my week in perspective. The sermon was both intellectually and emotionally engaging for me, providing a mix of philosophical underpinnings and illustrative real-life stories. This is not typical of a UU sermon so this might not be a regular feature of sermons at this church. Afterwards at coffee hour, people gathered in lively conversation. My I-am-sort-of-lost-here look did not work to get me into any of these circles. However, most of the little exchanges were polite and friendly. Finally, I found the welcome table. Had a great conversation and was introduced to other people. Overall, I enjoyed my visit. I like to me able to observe before meeting people, so this formal approach to visitors worked for me. I plan to return to enjoy a few of the many activities offered to adults.

Here goes my story about the Grafton and Upton UU church. For the last three winters I have been…read morehired to shovel the sidewalk and stairs in the front of the church. I have been paid well although getting up early so that you can shovel snow is quite annoying and sometimes I feel like I don't get enough, probably needed more sleep. This was good and the money supplemented my high school income (currently zero), so I was eager when my "boss" asked me if I was interested in becoming a janitor. By janitor there are some small complications. One being that I was a part time janitor, the other being that I was also temporary janitor. So I was the part-time temp from the Unitarian Universalist Society of Grafton and Upton. I got the always sufficient minimum wage and was happy because I only worked about seven hours a week. Since I was only hired to be the janitor before the church got another one, I was only hired for 5.5 weeks. I did mundane tasks such as vacuuming, dry mopping, wet mopping (that's right it is different, besides the obvious difference in H20), and washing the... ahem... toilets. It is kind of fun doing mindless work although I do consider myself moderately intelligent. After the five plus weeks I was happy not having to avoid cleaning around such events as AA and Narcotics Anonymous, not to mention Girl Scouts. I don't know if I would do it again if I could, but I can say that everyone, well almost everyone, that I encountered at the church was extremely nice and I would consider going there (If I wasn't an agnostic) and even leaving my child there (If I had a child). Also all the programs at the church, especially mass are in an extremely nice building except for the lack of parking.

Excellent children's programs, and open hearted, down to earth people. I was in women's Bible study here for months and my daughter participated in the Gem's program scheduled at the same time. I made some great friends and connections here. Services are scriptural based, and pastor is quite humble, funny and amiable. My daughter is rather reluctant in New situations, but the games, singing, and art activities drew her in. Now she greets the children's director with a hug every time. Don't miss the Easter Egg Hunt, which is the best I've ever seen! People turn out in droves, but it's extremely well planned and organized. Great free food, games, and activities.
