I checked into the room I booked & immediately noticed an extremely strong cigarette smell. It was nauseating. I informed the front desk & they initially denied it saying it was cleaned 4 days ago, they were very dismissive of my concerns. I went back 10 minutes later & insisted upon a room change. They reluctantly changed my room finally, but were very rude and passive aggressive about it. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. This place is akin to a mom n pop motel albeit with a larger footprint and friendly staff. Don't expect amenities or ambiance of a Marriott or Sheraton and you'll be satisfied. Room are spacious, beds comfy and the shower is just alright. Everything including hallways (and carpets) could use some renovations but it's again setting higher expectations. They don't charge you like larger chains do so again, you get what you pay for. Restaurant downstairs has decent menu and passable food. But I guess you if you are staying overnight due to ferry route or find yourself in Port Aux Basques due to business, these things don't matter much. We arrived. The check in gal was nasty and unhelpful. The lobby smelled like old socks. Later I rolled over to rest on my bed, and my nose found itself one inch from the unmistakeable smell of vomit. I am not kidding. Need I say more? The evening gal at the desk was more adept at basic human decency than her daytime coworker, but still was not nearly as shocked by my revelation as I thought she'd be. Perhaps vomit on the beds is not uncommon? We changed rooms as it was too late to leave. Then our ferry was canceled so we had to search for a new hotel. Avoid this place. Like the plague. A very sad end to a fabulous time in Newfoundland, a land of wonderful charming and often very funny people-- but for one or two. Who's perfect??! read more

This is one of the few hotels in Port aux Basques. There aren't many options but it is one of the hotels you'll inevitably stay at due to the proximity with the ferry terminal. This hotel had a very 1980's feel and somewhat clean. There's a bar with video lottery terminals and a restaurant. I stayed in a room with two queen beds. It was a bit musty but otherwise ok. The beds were decent and the bathroom, while small, was perfectly functional. The view of the room was the parking lot. If I had to sum up the hotel is that it's adequate and clean. It's a five minute drive to the ferry terminal which is all that matters since it's probably why you're staying here to begin with. read more

We've stayed here many times when catching the ferry to and from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland. It isn't the Marriott so don't expect anything too fancy. The rooms were always nice and clean. The walls can be a bit thin though. The bar is small but it's a good place to,pop in for a drink to wind down from a long day of driving. The restaurant serves a great breakfast but the supper was lacking vegetarian options (which, sadly, is the case in many places across NL). I believe the options were vegetarian stir fry, nachos and fries. Although, as I said, this is common across Newfoundland, I think it would be beneficial for them to add some more since they are one of the only hotels that tourist can stay at when they arrive off of the boat. A huge selling point for us was that they are pet friendly. Finally, the staff is amazing. They'Re Newfoundlanders so of course they are! Arrived at 7:00 at the hotel from the ferry. The restaurant was full and was told to come back in a bit. We figured 8:45 was a bit enough. We waited another 15 minutes to be seated and was told it would be another 45 minutes before our meal came. We ordered our meal and waited 30 minutes just for a glass of water. It's now 9:45 and still waiting for our food. The waitress comes by and asks us how we are doing. Really? We said we are still waiting for our food. She said the moose burger would be another 15 to 20 minutes(we're they still hunting for it?) , unacceptable , she then proceeds to say "well ,your chowder and mussels are ready" really? So why didn't she bring it out to us. My patience level diminished quickly and hunger pangs disappeared. We have a 5:00am get up so we got up and left. I was not expecting that but it certainly has left a bad taste in my mouth. I hope this was just a bad run of bad luck and the that the remainder of our trip in Newfoundland vastly improves. Thank goodness I had a bag of almonds on our bike. Brutal! read more
