This review is for the church. Family members suggested we visit this spacious church located on…read morethe site of one of the largest retirement communities in South Central NJ. The church is large by all standards with the main nave, altar, and pews arranged to hold over 400 worshipers at one time. In addition, there are four additional side altars connected to the main church but separated by connecting hallways so that multiple Masses could be conducted at any one time if needed (similar to ancient cathedrals). Likewise, if a Mass incorporates a smaller population, this can be held in the smaller altars instead of the large church area, conserving energy, HVAC, and power. While I was impressed with the layout (and I'm usually a harsh critic of modern architecture) this house of worship is actually quite well constructed and inspiring. We spent a peaceful 45 minutes in silent prayer here and it felt like only 5 minutes had elapsed. There are multiple areas for prayer, many icons, candles, and holy reminders of the patron, St Maximilian Kolbe, the Franciscan Polish priest who traded his life in the Nazi death camp "Auschwitz-Birkenau" in order to save a married man with children who was marked for execution. My sisters later met that man, Franciszek Gawojiczek, in the early 1990s when he toured America with an interpreter to give talks about St Father Maximilian Kolbe (canonized in 1982) Attached to the church grounds is a columbarium and mausoleum to hold the remains (both cremated and full caskets) of the parish's faithful departed. Veterans are marked by the appropriate military service insignia, wartime service dates, etc. We visited here on a warm, peaceful October afternoon and the experience was fulfilling. Mahalo for reading my review.
