My parents and I attended Evangelical Congregational Church in McKeesport, PA. at Walnut St. &…read moreOlive Ave. The pastor was Reverend John F. C. Green. He retired in 1966 and still attended till his passing in 1969. The church and its building are still in existence though a fraction in attendance from what it was then. There also was First Congregational Church in McKeesport on Evans Ave. It was pastored by Rev. George Kemp. The building remains but is closed. When Dr. Green retired, three candidates were invited to preach to be considered as his replacement. Rev. Kauffman (don't recall first name) a Rev. Osterweiss and the above mentioned Rev. Kemp. I had met Rev. Kauffman and his beautiful wife at church camp in central Pennsylvania called Hartman Center. This was 1962. He and his wife had made quite an impression on me and though it was now four years later, I was quite excited that he could become our pastor. On three consecutive weeks, all three spoke and Rev. Kauffman was outstanding. I'm sure he would have been selected but before the vote could be taken, he withdrew his consideration. Looking back, this was a crucial turning point in the life of Evangelical Congregational Church of McKeesport. Rev. Osterweiss was selected over Rev. Kemp. And though things cruised along with Rev. Osterweiss, there were a number of things found out about him later and many including my parents and myself stopped attending. We kept our memberships and around 1972 I think, Rev. Osterweiss was voted out and that church has never been the same. Now, what does this all have to do with South Hills Congregational Church? The passed over Rev. Kemp decided to leave the smaller First Cong. in McKeesport and start a new church in the South Hills. This was 1966. Our Congregational Churches at that time had youth groups that met at each other's churches from time to time. We also attended church camp together and so we knew a number of kids from the other Congregational churches. I recall Rev. Kemp and his wife well and also their daughter Nancy. They were the original pastor and family that started South Hills Congregational Church. I recall being there the summer of '67 for a youth rally. At present ( or whenever the picture was taken) that what was the church property has a sign on masonry that says "Sprout; center for emotional growth and development." I've said enough. Hope this brings back some memories for others that attended or visited there when that building proclaimed Christ. I'm supposed to rate my own review?

I attribute that to the fact that the church doesn't focus on tertiary things, but values the important aspects of life that God values, specifically the good news that Christ died to redeem us and that all of us are in need of grace and mercy. I've been going here for almost three years now and I can tell you that it's not a perfect church, but love leaks out everywhere. I recommend visiting a community group, as well as a Sunday morning service, as "real life" application and connection with others deepens there.

Pastor Josh preaches verse by verse through books of the Bible and community groups, which meet in people's homes, help to foster relationships and allow time to dig deeper and discuss the sermon from that week. I love the opportunity to partake in the Lords supper each week as well as the reciting of Jesus words in the great commission at the end of every service to remember the important mission we all have as followers of Christ and the power we have been given to fulfill it. Worship is great and care is taken to make sure that the songs are theologically rich and accurate. There are many opportunities to be the hands and feet and to use your gifts here rather than just attend. I highly recommend visiting if you are looking for a Christ centered, missional mindset kind of church!

It is easy to see because they have a catchy sign on Rt 88 that will get you thinking about spiritual things. The congregation is small but people oriented. They are affiliated with the Church of God ministries located in Anderson, Indiana. This church follows a structured format and is noted in your bulletin. There are two different small groups that meet weekly. Also before each service which starts at 10 am they offer a Bible study called "digging deeper" where you can study a portion of the Bible and learn more of the implications on your life. Once a month they have congregational prayer gatherings which I found beneficial. It is a small congregation consisting of about 75 people. Special events are planned so you can better get acquainted with one another as well as have fun. They have both nursery and children's church. I'm deeply impressed with their children's church because twice when I was leaving I had received a small gift from them. Perhaps one of my favorite times during the service is called "Kid's time" when Pastor Herb pulls various things out of a bag to give them an object lesson. That lesson then gets incorporated into the sermon he is preaching. Sermon notes are enclosed in your bulletin with a fill in the blank. Should you miss a week then you can find past sermons on their website. The people are very friendly and open. The service always ends with Pastor Herb stating, "Now let's go be the church." They serve coffee, tea, and cookies before and after service. The music provided is a good mix of old gospel favorites and new, on-the-radio contemporary stuff. The facility and flock are pastored by a man named Herb Shaffer, who exhibits a true sense of common joy in every aspect of his life. A five minute conversation with him reveals a character about which you really feel comfortable to be around. Services are structured in a way to allow the visitor to be done and out before noon on Sundays, ahead of most other church traffic. Services begin at 10 AM.
