Each building houses memorabilia relevant to that subject. For example, all of the train memorabilia is in the train depot, so when you walk into each building it is like stepping back in time. The one room schoolhouse was one of my favorites. I also loved Duke's grocery store. There is so much to see. This place is definitely worth a stop!

There are several…read morebuildings, beginning with the original building built by the WPA in the 30's, with a large fireplace with local petrified wood. Most of that building has original displays, like a hand-painted & -lettered display about the geological history of the area made in the 1940's, and dioramas about cattle ranching. This building also houses Native American artifacts like arrowheads and katchina dolls. The next building (attached) proceeds past the ancient and pioneer history to the early days of Sterling. Another attached building takes us to 1900's history, up through the 1950's. My favorite was the recreation of the WPA art that was originally to be on the front of the building - sketches found tucked in a closet a few years ago by Harold Keeler and painted in 2025 by local artist Nate Laybourn. So excellently done and so exciting to find! Outdoors you'll find pioneer buildings like an old schoolhouse, barber shop, blacksmith shop, church, etc. as well as an old caboose. Our family loved this museum so much, we came two days in a row to see it all! Friendly staff and clean restrooms throughout as well as great AC for these hot summer days.

While at the Buffalo Bill Center, we spotted signs for the Fick Fossil and History Museum which is practically across the street from the Buffalo Bill Center. So, we decided to stop for a quick visit. This is a great little museum and was an unexpected find in the middle of Kansas. In my opinion, this was more of a history museum than a fossil museum although they did have several impressive fossil displays. Having recently visited the Sternberg Museum, I was more interested in some of the historical exhibits than I was in seeing more fossil displays. Admission is free; it's convenient to I-70 (Oakley exit). Allow 1-2 hours, longer if you have kids.

It was very very fun, but don't come here if you like fossils and have somewhere to be! All of the fossils were found here, and they also have a wide variety of natural, local, and American historical artifacts. They even had some artifacts/pieces of stone from international landmarks (like Vesuvius and Egyptian tombs)! All in all, a very neat little gem off the side of the highway.

Chuck and Barbra are knowledgeable, and are connected in the fossil world all over. They've lectured across the U.S., and have friends in serious places, like at New York's Museum of Natural History. I mostly enjoyed the conversation, and when Chuck explained some of the fossils and murals, I appreciated them much more than I would have otherwise. If you're a museum type, check this out.
