Ask the Community - St John Catholic School

Does this school have a cafeteria?

We do not currently have a cafeteria. Students typically eat snack and lunch outside. If weather doesn’t permit eating/playing outside students will eat inside the school and have recess in the gym.

The teachers and staff are kind, and the new principal, Mr. Redemer, has been very approachable and easy to talk to. Anytime we've had a concern, it's been taken seriously and addressed. For Redwood Christian Middle/High School (San Lorenzo)…read more It is selfish of the school to cause so much traffic by only having one entrance in a highly residential area where it causes Buses to be significantly delayed. It is selfish of Redwood Christian to cause major traffic along a major Bus Route that is used by other students at nearby schools. In comparison to other schools, this car system is the worst of the worst. Although a response may be that allowing students to be dropped off at the back entrance near Via Vista/Neilsen will cause disturbance to the residents in that area, at least that door is not part of a major Bus route (93, which is used by many students: Arroyo High School, KIPP Schools, Bay Elementary, Bohannon Middle School, and even more schools further down). Because cars won't move at all on the one-lane street unless they get into your school, it causes the Bus to be stuck there for 5-10 minutes for such a short distance. The negative impact of such delay is a late bus of regularly 10+ minutes, up to 20 minute delay. It is not simply "take an earlier bus" if the school can decrease traffic.

Not only do they emphasize academic progress, they also balance the curriculum out with fun, play, music, foreign language (Spanish) and teach to make sure the students become well rounded citizens of the Earth. The student body is already very well diversified! The school is very well organized under the school principal Ms. Kaya. Staff of whom we have interacted with are extremely nice and responsive to any concerns. Tuition is one of the most reasonable you can find in the whole Bay Area, the value each student get is tremendous! The tuition even includes extended care which in already pays for itself! Especially for busy family with both full time working parents. Public schools usually ends around 2:30, but your tuition includes extended care until 6:00! I think my husband and I are both in awe, every month, on how little we are paying for a "private school" education. In fact the tuition is very similar to our local public schools after school program, and that program was suppose to already run by a registered non profit organization! Our family is extremely grateful that we have found this school. And grateful for all the teachers and staff our children have had so far. Big shout out to Ms. Mary (which my children talk about everyday, even if they have already moved on from her class), Ms Divine, and Ms. Contreras. Special thanks to all the administrative staff: Ms. Maria, Ms. Hernandez, Mr. Hawkins, Ms. Mary-Ann and countless others! I am surprised that not more people know about this hidden gem! Maybe the parents of students going to the school wants it to stay that way! The way we found out about this school was a referral by our friend. I heard that the Union City campus is already at full capacity every grade and is baffled why the CV campus is not yet. But don't take my word for it! Contact the school and take a tour yourself. You don't know what your kids are missing!

At CVHS the teachers (more than one and on numerouse occasions) had said "do your homework or not I get paid all the same" the teachers at Redwood are STILL paying their student loans and are further commited to excellence than any school in this state. My best friend started her first year teaching at this school during my first year attendance and I feel we 'learned the ropes' together. Although most students were 'challenging' having their social/personal lives conflicting with academics, I honestly do NOT think half my graduating class would have even made it to that day if it were not for the debunking of the rumors that coexisted with this school by the teachers I had the oppertunity of knowing. Yeah this all sounds wierd even now being 2013, five years after graduation, but if I could go back to when I was at the 'main high school' I would STILL choose Redwood. Also if Hoffman and Schooley are still teaching...they are bitchin. (positive sense) Also, I havn't been around campus in a few years so if they are no longer a bunch of portables on a parking lot good for them!

Trojan parents were screaming at high schoolers, running up and getting in their face, as well as cursing at small children; however, Trojan security blamed the visitors for mischief and kept surveilling them as if they were the source of the trouble When only Trojan players and parents were the ones acting aggressive. Moreover, the umpire claimed to "not see" any bad behavior by the home team and frequently called in the home team's favor: strikes were flagged as "balls" and obvious tag-outs were called "safe". Out of dozens of baseball games I have attended at many schools, this school had the most corrupt and poor display of leadership with their coaches, umpire, and security. No integrity with their staff whatsoever. I feel sorry for the kids at CVHS who are learning from these sad, sorry examples of adults.

As a former Parent Ambassador 2020-2021 (parent volunteer) at Burbank Elementary School I strongly urge you to ask the school questions like: - Ask why are both playgrounds fenced off when, the vehicle accident only damaged the kindergarten playground? It's not because of COVID. - Ask when they will they fix the kindergarten playground? - Ask why do they make the children duck down in place immediately after they blow a whistle before the children line up for class similar, to what prison guards do on prison yards? - Ask why they don't utilize the raised garden beds to teach the children how to grow plants? - Ask why they don't offer Spanish IXL when it's a dual language immersion school along with the core curriculum subjects offered on IXL? - Ask them what happened to the black assistant principle and the on-site parent liaison? - Ask why the teacher demographics don't reflect the student demographics equitably? -Ask them why the PTA doesn't reflect the demographics of the school? - Ask what have they done to implement the districts ABAR policies and SEL framework? -Ask them what they did with the Emergency COVID funds the state provided districts that reopened schools during COVID? -Ask them how the black & brown children are performing in the school compared to state standards? It sucks that I had to take my child out of the school that's in my neighborhood and drive across town to get my son a decent education.
