Instead of protecting students, certain staff members contributed to an environment where bullying and emotional abuse were ignored--or worse, encouraged. When issues were brought to the attention of teachers or administrators, they were often dismissed, minimized, or turned back on the student. Some staff spoke in demeaning, sarcastic, or intimidating ways, which made students feel unsafe and powerless. Rather than intervening, adults in authority sometimes sided with aggressors or treated students as if they were the problem for speaking up. The lack of accountability was extremely damaging. Policies against bullying seemed to exist only on paper, with little to no follow-through. Students were left feeling unheard, anxious, and afraid to attend school. A school should be a place of learning and growth, not fear. Until this institution takes real responsibility, provides proper training for staff, and genuinely listens to students, it fails to meet even the most basic standards of care and safety.

Students spoke so highly of the love and care they felt from their teachers and administrators. Faculty and staff spoke frequently about how much the team felt like a family. A few common themes among the parents I spoke with were how safe the campus was, the administration's approachability, and the absolute trust they placed in the teachers and their students. Mr. Aaron and his team have done a wonderful job creating a school environment where students can thrive, love like Jesus, and learn well, and I highly recommend this school!

In addition, the Administrators, School Board (with multiple parents serving) and Teachers really value parent involvement. My spouse and I are involved and our input is appreciated. If you are looking for a co-op-like school that you can be involved with -- CCA is for you! My child's Kindergarten teacher was very receptive to working with me. Last year my child learned to read, write (handwrite and cursive), was doing addition and subtraction. He grew tremendously in confidence and sense of self. My child also memorized multiple poems and Bible verses during the year in addition to 60+ questions and answers of the Catechism for Young Children. The staff creates an environment where all of the children, grades K-8, encourage and support one another. When my son comes to school, the other kids run up to the gate jumping up and down to welcome him. He loves school! The teachers helped to fuel my child's interests as well. All of the students presented in their Science Fair last year, including the Kinders, and my child LOVED it because he is really excited about science. The school sets aside specific days for the arts and PE and the students perform (music and drama!) each year. We are going to start our second year with CCA. Our 6 year old goes to Newport Elementary and then the after school instructors pick her up at school and walk her over for camp. It works out so well. We did Active Kids in Newport Beach and tried the YMCA after-school program and they were pretty terrible, so we were thrilled when we found Christ Church by the Sea. After just a week at this after-school program our son said he liked this one even better than After School All-Stars, which really surprised me. Their facilities are outstanding. They have a large playground, a lot of toys, bunny rabbits, a caring staff, and they keep the groups very small. They do homework with the child and when they do pickup they have informally asked the teacher about my child's progress, which is great. It shows how personalized the program is. They have a very structured program and it is great for my child. I was a little bit concerned at first since we aren't Methodist so let me address this here. In a nutshell, this program is for everyone and not just people who share methodist beliefs. They are warm and caring. We're Christian, and we wouldn't mind at all if they talked about God more, but they really don't push religion very much. They have two short sessions with a pastor every month which largely consists of singing faith-based songs to guitar music. I think this is probably a good thing since it won't make any of the kids feel ostracized if they aren't religious. My child asks questions about Jesus to the staff all the time--and they love it. They will answer his questions and get almost giddy when he asks questions about Jesus. So the religious aspect is there for the kids seeking it out, but I don't think anyone who doesn't share their religious beliefs feel a bit uncomfortable. Everyone we've seen--including the pastor--is female (for what its worth).

I am critiquing the way that this school handled this particular issue regarding my daughter. Rather than informing parents that masking would temporarily return, they instead tied an adult sized mask to my 2 year olds face that was so large, that it went from her eyes to her neck. The school claims they notified parents however many other parents at the time with me were confused and wondering as to why they were also not informed. Had I been informed I would have gladly put a child mask on my toddler. I had no issue with the mask but wanted to at least get eye to eye with her so I could assure her everything was going to be okay because she was born in 2020 and was terrified of masks literally her entire life and needed to comfort her and reassure her. They instead tied the adult mask to her face and carried her away. I immediately removed her from the school because of how this was handled. Again, to the yelp moderators that are going to flag this again, I am NOT against the masks! The principal rudely told me, I'm sorry we don't agree with your masking philosophy. I'm not against the masks! I'm against the way that you handled this incident with a 2 year old! I proceeded to leave a bad review to which I was called multiple times by their staff asking to remove it. I will not. Yelp, this review violates no policies. Never again New Horizons.

It particularly sad as it is antithetical to everything a Catholic school should be.

The classes are smaller and more intimate than the Pasadena campus (not that I have anything against that campus!). Everyone in the office and all of the instructors work hard accomodating those that have full-time jobs on top of their seminary studies.
