Pretty fun volunteer work where you fill requests from prisoners around the country for books they want to read. Anyway, that's not why I'm reviewing this church.... As we were finishing up, the woman who runs the program said she wanted to take us on a tour of the church. My first thought, "I've seen my fair share of churches while traveling. I get it." But I go, so as not to be rude, and she walks us down a hallway in the basement, just a few feet from where we were packing books, and she opens up a short little gate and we walk into a tiny room. It's a burial site with four tombs: John Adams, Abigail Adams, John Quincy Adams and Louisa Catherine Adams! Apparently, it's the only place in the country where two dead presidents are buried together. And they are just a few stops on the red line away from most of us! We also went upstairs into the main area of the church, which was beautiful and intimate, and sat in the Adams pew. The church has been around since 1828. Check it out.

Russian Orthodox Church refused to baptized them because my husband and I were not devoted church goers. Catholic Church refused to baptized them for the exactly same reason. Everything was too complicated, too rigid, and too strict. No one would give my kids a chance to start their own journeys with God. Then we found Father Gray. I never knew much about the Protestant religion. We don't have it in Russia. At least, I was not familiar with it. It makes the most common sense to me. There are no strict rules. It's all about love and acceptance. I couldn't have wished a better religion for my children. Both of my children were baptized by Father Gray in the open ocean. Thank you Father Gray for making this so much fun and for the gift of first ever bibles for my children.

I saw a couple reviews that mentioned the church's Southern Baptist Convention roots and just…read morewanted to speak to that. I understand the resistance, truly I do. The past year that I have been in Boston has involved a lot of researching denominations and trying to understand them and the SBC certainly is a hard one to grapple with for many. But no matter how many times I've ventured elsewhere, I *always* come back to Hope Fellowship. Mostly, that is because I'm convinced that Hope Fellowship is led by godly, prayerful people and that the Spirit is bearing fruit here. Again, trust me, I get the doctrinal disputes and I struggle with the SBC on certain issues. At Hope, the leadership doesn't shy from hard topics but it also doesn't give black-and-white, pre-scripted answers; nor does it give wishy-washy, ungrounded ones. I've only ever seen Hope leadership tackle highly sensitive subjects in a nuanced, thoughtful, and humble way. Even if you don't agree 100%, you know you can share your perspective with leadership and be heard and loved. Furthermore, personally, I've found that this church has a refreshing way of incorporating confession and also rejoicing in God's mercy. During each service we have a call-and-response of a Psalm and then a prayer of confession and then a passage reminding us of how we have been redeemed from that sin. It's so balanced and thoughtful and, to me, really models what we see throughout Acts as people come to faith--a rhythm of repentance and joyfully accepting God's grace. If you are looking for a church that does not shy from tough questions and that will continually extend the love of Christ to you and motivate you to do the same for others, this place does that.

I went to mass today and really enjoyed the sermon. The mass was lovely as the priest talked about…read morehow God is love. All was great as I received communion and said my prayers and waited for the mass to end. Unfortunately the peaceful feeling I had was replaced by shock as the priest took the pulpit not to end the mass in peace but instead to preach about how Obama's acceptance of gays desecrates the sanction of marriage. So sad that the theme of the mass was "God is love" yet hatred for gays prevails. I'm going to have to find another (probably episcopalian) church in the area where there is no hypocrisy and hatred for our fellow human beings.

I've attended this church for many years and I'm sad to say that the leadership has gone very much…read moredownhill. They once were a place that embraced women in ministry, but the present leadership has marginalized the voice of women leaders. When the Senior Minister was called out on it, he responded during one of his sermons, "The rules for diversity are different in a corporation from that in a church. I'm not going to go out of my way to create candidate pools that include women and I'm not going to hire someone just because they're a woman." Worse than that, our church did have a democratic structure that embraced the voice of the congregation. Now, the present leadership has often delayed or even ignored the congregation's requests for meetings to review decisions of the church, the Elder Board ignores congregant emails, and the Senior Minister has harnessed control of every committee so there are no "checks and balances" to his power. In a church born only 30 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, it's sad to see the attack on the democratic structure of the church. Not a good time to make this your church home, but if you want to stop by to listen to a pretty choir and see the inside of a historical building then pay it a visit.
