YABI is a Melbourne based organisation that is doing a world of good for young people (generally for those individuals aged between 18-30) who either have or are suffering from a mental health condition; from depression to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to name. YABI helps those people through the establishment of team based professional networks and the establishment of leisure activities, and today I am here to review my recent involvement with YABI's St Kilda Beach Volleyball team. Last Tuesday (as at the time of writing this) I was invited to come down and play beach volleyball with YABI on the house (where normally the total investment is $20 per person) and what a great night this was. The YABI St Kilda Beach Volleyball team did really well despite the tough conditions (yes, the wind) and me having not played beach volleyball for a long, long time.
The organisers (Vic Beach) are really supportive of new competitiors, where for instance if my serve did not make it over the net the first two times, I would get one more shot. Falling into the sand was also part of the fun while I was wearing my team YABI t-shirt. Apart from beach volleyball, YABI is also organising a team based AFL event to also help raise awareness of mental health issues. All are welcome to support YABI and their good work by either being a spectator or a player at the beaxch volleyball events. The current season ends on the 3rd of April, and then beach volleyball season kicks off again in November. If you wish to take part (you do not need to have suffered or be suffering a mental illness in order to be a part of team YABI), please contact Jordy Heis (Director of YABI) directly on the contact details provided or via the YABI website.
