There is a 25 person maximum for each tour and they are very strict about this. By 3:35pm 25 people arrived in line and they shut down the line. Anyone else that arrived after that was turned away. First, you have to go through a screening, and then you get to go inside the main area. The building is amazing with tons of gold, statues, and portraits. I liked the green and red themes of their houses, very similar to the British Parliament or Canada. The tour is 45 minutes and you get to go into both houses and the library. It's a beautiful Victorian building, with columns and all, located right next to some gardens. I took the free tour, which took about an hour. I was lined up on the steps, and given a very thorough security screening process. No flashlights! No pickles! No laser pointers! Our guide was a very funny docent through the historic halls of power. She led us through the galleries and cracked jokes about the previous leaders and their selection for posing for portraits. We went through the library, and learned about this history of the government and got to see where all that tax money is going! The actual chambers of parliament were the coolest, where we got to sit in the seats that lawmakers sit in, and take in the cool architecture, artwork and amazing attention to detail and symbolism behind every item in there. The guide made good-natured jokes about the government, about how the symbolic mace keeps getting stolen, along with chandeliers and other items. The tour was so worth it! I really had a great time getting a crash course in Aussie government, and seeing the protesters out on the steps was a good way to see what's really going on in Victoria!

I always enjoy going to the Ian Potter Museum of Art. Aside from the NGV this art museum has the…read morebest exhibitions in Melbourne and a great permanent collection of classical Greek vases. It is easy to get to the museum for the many trams going up Swanston St to the University of Melbourne in Parkville. But it is often difficult to talk about it because people get confused with the NGV's Ian Potter Centre at Federation Square; if only more Australians had been so philanthropic as Ian Potter then there would be more people to name art galleries after. On the front wall of the museum is one of my favorite public sculptures in Melbourne, Cultural Rubble. The collection of casts of antiquities is perfect for the front of the art museum. Inside there are three floors of purpose built large gallery spaces with a large stain glass window hanging in the stairwell (another permanent exhibition). There is a lift but I prefer to walk up the stairs to admire the stain glass window. In the gallery space there are three temporary exhibitions, along with the permanent collection of Greek vases (I've seen those before). At the reception area there is bag check, where I'm asked to leave my day-pack, and a few books for sale. There are also toilets on the ground floor.

Absolutely sign up for a guided tour to view this building. You start the tour at the museum next…read moredoor and then walk over to the Royal Exhibition Building. You get to walk in and take as many pics as you'd like. Then, you go down stairs into the basement. And then, on the way back you go up to the rooftop. The rooftop has great views of the city and surrounding areas. I took a ton of pics up there and we had a great time. After that, you'll walk back down to the 2nd floor and take more pics inside. I can't believe how much original stuff is still here. Great way to spend an hour.

As part of the Yarra Plenty Regional Library Service Ivanhoe Library has an amazing range of books, DVDs, cds and magazines. Ivanhoe Library hosts a wide range of events and has all the services you expect from your local library plus all the extras that are available at a YPRL branch. The ground floor is home to the information desk while the first floor has a Wii room and Genealogy area, the top floor is a space for events and study. From the third floor the view of Melbourne's CBD is stunning, a total distraction from your study. Free wifi and CBD views. What more could you want? On a balmy summers evening my favourite way to take a study break is grabbing an ice cream from Cosi Duci and spend time catching up with friends at the courtyard outside the library. It may not be the most modern building or innovative space, but as far as a traditional library atmosphere, Ivanhoe has it!

Melbourne has some of the best examples of art-deco architecture, its easy to forget to look up and…read moreappreciate the innovation and beauty of these inter war buildings. Newspaper house is a classic example of the deco style and features an intricate mosaic by one of the leading artisans of the times. The mosaic is a scene of transport and technology, trains, ships, cars etc which reflected the periods technological advancements and modernist influence. "I'll put a girdle round about the earth". The mosaics text summarises the periods technological influence and its shrinking of the globe, specifically communication and news. The buildings facade was designed and built in 1933/34 (if you look closely you can see the date in the mosaic) for the then owners 'Herald and Weekly Times ltd'. Apologies for going all eccentric art historian, I just think its a cool artistic/historical statement that locals and tourists should understand and enjoy. Next time you're on Collins take a gander.
