This is one of the better Chinese take out places in my neighborhood. Chinese Express is closer but I find the quality here a step up. This is a newer restaurant and its located in the same shopping plaza as Shop 'n Save in Maplewood. There is always plenty of parking. There are a handful of table to use if you want to eat it there. I have only had the food to go. The people are friendly and the combination dinners are filling and fresh. They offer white and fried rice as choices in the combo dinners. I hate to give a bad review to any place in 63143 because I love buying local, but this place has the worst food ever. The seasoning isn't even remotely Chinese, and everything is just bland and overcooked. On the bright side, the place is clean, inviting, and everything is fresh and new looking. Service is fast and friendly. (How they can overcook anything that is ready so fast is beyond me, unless everything is pre-cooked and tossed in the deep fryer to heat it back up!) The appetizer combination was dry, brown, and underwhelming. Couldn't even tell the difference in taste between the WonTon and the Crab Rangoon -- only the shapes were different. The shrimp box with fried rice was weird -- the shrimp were butterflied and extremely breaded, so they tasted like discs of dry, overcooked breading. The fried rice wasn't too bad, but the only ingredients are bean sprouts, onions, rice, and a LOT of soy sauce. Hot & Sour soup was neither hot nor sour, so in a sack of almost $30 of Chinese take-away, the only remotely enjoyable thing was the fried rice. Really, really disappointing and we'll never go back. We'll be so happy when Wong's Inn opens back up in August! If you're in the Maplewood area, go to Wong's for value or Chinese Express at the Hi-Pointe corner for really good Chinese food. read more

This is a new addition to Maplewood and I am glad they are here. It's a basic Chinese place that is good for carryout on rainy days where you don't feel like cooking. The inside feels a little bland and half their menu was not lit up when we arrived. Not a big deal, but weird since they opened very recently. They also had taken down their daily combo options before 5pm even though they advertise them available until like 8 or 9pm. That was a little dissapointing but nothing to get upset about since their prices are reasonable without the combo deal. I was also dissapointed because every time their worker walked past me, it reeked of cigarette smoke, very badly. The food, however, did not dissapoint! It was perfect and the portions were huge, so I had lots of leftovers. I got the General Tso chicken dinner and was satisfied. The General Tso was poorly cooked and just thrown together, with no real blending of the flavors. I call back to let them know and what I get in response was an attitude, and again I over looked. When I go to eat an egg roll it was greasy and super soggy as well as the other 3. And they tasted as if they were fried in along with my General Tso. So, when I call to let them know the issue the owner sighs and catches an attitude as if I had the nerves to call and complain. A lot of the reviews on here say the food is tasty (or some variation of that). I've ordered from St. Louis Kitchen three times now. The first, it took over an hour for my delivery to get here (and they are fairly close). I called, they said the driver should be there any moment. 10 minutes later they show up. The second time, everything got here in about 20 minutes tops. I figured, okay, redemption. Tonight, it was over an hour again. Called, same excuse. The amount of time between the call, and delivery = max drive time from restaurant. Both times, the food was soggy and warm. The only time the food was hot, was when they delivered fast. But the quality still wasn't there. Attempt #1,2: had the orange chicken and gen tso's - bland, soggy, just rather gross. Tonight, I went with Beef and Broccoli. It tasted good, after a trip trough the microwave to warm it up. Pot stickers were okay, better when they are hot. The soups are okay (wonton, egg drop, and egg drop w/ wonton). Same issues with temperature. Crab Rangoon was good on attempt 2 when it was hot, otherwise it's a big no. So, after three tries, we're not ordering from this place again. There are too many options around for Chinese delivery. Maybe they are better when you eat in the restaurant. But if that's what it takes, there are even better eat-in Chinese restaurants in town. I got a to go order from St. Louis Kitchen. Small crab Rangoon, large hot n sour soup, and small beef with broccoli. The bill was $12.something. This was easily enough food for 2 people. It was very good mediocre take out Chinese food. I would certainly go back if that's what I needed again. The specials seemed to be a great deal and if that's what the people I saw eating there were having then they were quite generous with the portions. One of the two Chinese restaurants that I patronize regularly, St. Louis Kitchen has always made pretty good "staple" takeout. They don't have anything particularly unusual, but the food is good. My favorite here is the beef with fresh broccoli - every time I've ordered it the beef has been tender and delicious. I've only ordered delivery a couple of times and I have to say that both times it took longer than I would have liked and the food wasn't as enjoyable as picking it up fresh. I love St Louis Kitchen. It's delicious, classic St. Louis Chinese food. It's close to my house and I love ordering pick up! I've always been treated well by staff! Until last night, I decided to try and call to order delivery. It was a success! We were within the delivery area, and I was excited for the food that was now on its' way. When the delivery guy got to the door, he saw my boyfriend and his friend asleep in front of the door and began rudely yelling at them, "Foods' here!! FOOD HERE!!" Meanwhile, I was getting up from the couch saying, "Hang on a sec, I'm coming out!" But he was so busy yelling and shouting into my house that he didn't hear me. He kept shouting that the food was here even though I was trying to confirm to him that I was on my way to the door. It was abrasive and rude. It's always scary trying a new Chinese place... but I was extremely happy we tried this place tonight. I'm pretty picky when it comes to Chinese food. We ordered crab Rangoon and they were perfect!! The cream cheese was melted, creamy, and perfect! I got general chicken and it was great!! My boyfriend got Mongolian beef and he thought it was ok... but added some soy sauce and liked it much more. Called in a pick up order on a Thursday night. when I walked up to the counter to pick up and pay I was immediately shooed away by the employee as she yelled at the guy sitting in the wait area that his order was ready.... Even though it was not. I then proceeded to the counter to pay but not before she screamed at the other employees in her native tongue and basically in my face. I have gotten take away from them several times, and each time, the food as been really good. I get something different each time I have gone there, and it has been consistently good. If I want Chinese food when I'm at home in my St. Louis house, I go here. I got Moo Goo Gai Pan the last time that I was there, and I decided that I don't like it, not just from them but in general and from other restaurants, too. The Cashew Chicken was fried chicken nuggets with a sauce and cashews scattered through out it. Loved it. The Beef with Broccoli was really good, too. And it was served hot, which is something to note because other places sometimes don't serve their food hot. The Sweet and Sour Chicken was fried chicken nuggets cooked in a sweet and sour sauce that was just as good as the others mentioned above. The sauce was not too sweet and not too sour which is difficult to do, I think, because most of the time, when I have gotten sweet and sour anything at other Chinese restaurants, it's too sweet or too sour. There are tables and chairs there so you can eat there, or take it away to eat at home, and that's part of what I like about it. Unless rice is ordered otherwise or it comes included with your food; a box of white rice comes with your food as kinda a side order. Maybe they had an off night, but we did not have a good experience. We were originally thrilled to find a Chinese restaurant that also served American food because we have two incredibly picky eaters in the family. We ordered steamed dumplings for the lot of us, after much discussion about what comes on a Cheeseburger (he clearly articulated that he didn't want anything but meat, cheese, bun, and ketchup) we ordered a cheeseburger and cheese sticks for Picky #1 and Sweet and Sour Chicken dinner combo with sauce on the side for Picky #2. Hubby ordered pepper beef dinner combo and I ordered Hot & Spicy chicken dinner combo. It took FOREVER to get our food - like more than 30 minutes and there were only two other people in the restaurant (granted, we couldn't tell what the delivery scene looked like). Cheese sticks, egg rolls, and crab rangoon were pretty good. Steamed dumplings were cold when we got them. Sweet and sour chicken was edible. Pepper beef had hardly any beef and what was there was rubbery and the veggies were cut in such big pieces they needed to be cut - which is really hard to do with chopsticks or a plastic fork (the only cutlery options). Hot & Spicy Chicken was nauseating - I took one bite and got an instant headache. But the piece de resistance was the cheeseburger. As a reminder, we had a LONG discussion with the woman at the register about whether anything came on the cheeseburger (she assured us there was nothing but meat, cheese, and bun). We asked her if there was ketchup and mustard available for us to put on the cheeseburger. She said "Yes". The aforementioned cheeseburger came to us dressed with mayo, lettuce (really wilty, sad lettuce), and tomato. When we brought it back up there (with no bites at all) they refused to make it right. Very very very very rude people here. I call and place an order and he said if it's not more then 15 then we don't deliver and hangs up on me. And the problem is I wasn't even done ordering lol. I had 3 more people to place an order. So I call back up to see what happened and then he wouldn't let me talk. I continued to try and tell him that I had more orders to place but he wouldn't listen. Surprisingly solid for an American Chinese place! I placed an order for carry-out by phone and was told it would be ready in 15-20 minutes. I settled on the General Tso's Chicken combination dinner and Curry Beef combination dinner with some pork lo mein. All were pretty good. I placed an order at 6:22 on a Monday night and was quoted an hour delivery time. An hour and 15 minutes later I call and ask for a status update and was told that all deliveries are currently out and it should be arriving soon. 20 - 25 minutes later my food finally arrives I mentioned what time I placed the order to the driver and he suggested calling and complaining. When I called to complain and ask for a refund the lady told me she couldn't just give me a refund without getting the food back. Like I was insane for asking for a refund for cold food when it took twice as long as they said. when I told her I wasn't going to drive up there to bring the food back she said she'd send the driver back to pick it up. This place is a great spot for some cheap delivery / pickup Chinese food. We always order veggie fried rice and lo mein. I have to have a full order of chicken teriyaki to myself, this is the only reason we keep coming back. CHICKEN TERIYAKI. .. that's the best thing on the menu in my opinion. The only bad thing about this place is consistency. It's not there period. I've placed many orders here and sometimes the rice is undercooked and then burnt on the flat top the fry it on. The chicken teriyaki is supposed to be brown, almost black, crispy and thick in sauce. Half the time we order it I question if it's cooked all the way because it's still soggy.
