Don't worry, there's still rows upon rows of sumptuous produce for you too, I was just a little over-excited to see such a large variety of allergy-specific foodstuffs. This deli is huge, and it's easy to get lost in aisles of towering cheeses; pasta sauces; ready-made and ridiculously healthy meals; gourmet ice cream, gelato and sorbets; and olive oils. Seriously, there are so many varieties of olive oil, it's hard not to believe you're in Italy. But the best part? The huge selection of gluten-free muesli (yes, there is the Byron Bay's own Brookfarm Muesli [though exceedingly expensive it is outrageously delicious]) as well as dairy-free gelato and the gluten-free pasta. And it's not just the spaghetti which is gluten-free, it's everything from squid-ink pasta to tagliatelle. And of course, to be true to any deli, Zone is packed with fresh fruit and veg, a huge number of cuts of meat and wonderfully sweat pastry treats (I highly recommend the Turkish Delight...out of this world!).

As for the deli section WOW, I love love love it. The antipasto selection is vast and all super tasty. I am not someone who likes olives, in fact I can be found discretely trying to spit them out, however the olives from zone fresh are delicious and you can find me fighting for the last one! Definitely try the stuffed olives with brie and sweet chilli. You can also order platters from zone fresh. I have ordered some for this weekend so i will report back. The butcher section is also fantastic. The meat, poultry etc is all delicious and great quality. You can get some handy hints from the butchers for recipes for dinner. I also love the oil selection in zone fresh. My husband is a chef so likes to experiment with different things. This store is a cave of treasures for him to create culinary delights. Don't expect to get things cheaply in zone fresh but do expect the best quality and service.

Don't be put off by the fishy smell - there is a fish monger at the back of the store where you can get fresh seafood - I have never had a bad experience buying my seafood here. They sell a variety of seafood including fresh fish, live mud crabs, mussels, prawns and squid. You can buy the fish whole or pre-cut, if you do buy a whole fish you can ask them to fillet and skin it while you wait. You can pick up bunches of fresh vegetables here for $1-$2 and there are so many choices of ramen noodles, some starting from as little as 24c (just make sure you add some veggies to your noodles to add some nutritional value). When I was living on Struggle Street during my trainee days I could do my entire weeks shop here for $30 or less! I still shop here at least once a month - it is a great place to pick up exotic ingredients and affordable seafood.

Things like milk, bread and like staples are more expensive if I've got to make an emergency dash. But they open at 6am and close at 7pm. Every single day. It's worth the convenience...and goodness knows I love me some predictability! The staff are the icing on this tasty, tasty cake. The lick of red paint they've given the place gives it something of an edgier, more contemporary feel, but at the end of the day, it's the booth seats, the retro dining tables, and the wonderfully simple, unpretentious menu that will get your attention. They sell Blackstar coffee ($3), which is roasted just up the road in West End. Locals supporting locals. I just love this caring sort of business. Their menu is simple and lovely. There was an old writer who said that simple things are the least likely to corrupt themselves. True that, if the corn fritters are anything to go by. Delish! The food is very well priced too. There are two rad places to get a coffee in Annerley, and they've both got very different characters. I'd generally opt for Groove Cafe. Mainly because they support a local coffee house, and so I'd like to support them support others. It's got a good feeling about it. That, and the booths are just so darned cute to snuggle up in.

With my book in hand, I decided I'd have my regular skinny latte with a slice of hazelnut chocolate cake (which I've forgotten the name of). Miettes uses Campos coffee, which is supposedly good I suppose, but my skinny latte turned out too dark. It was a bit too bitter for me and left me a bit disappointed. The cake's flavour was decent, but was a bit difficult to cut, as it had many different layers. The texture was a bit chewy, which I had mixed feelings about, but the chocolate layers were good. I was expecting more of a flaky crunch, and perhaps the look of the cake was deceiving, but it was a bit heavy and not really my thing. Maybe I should have gone for the lighter passionfruit flavoured cake, or a croissant instead. It was really pretty though! They do have breads and cookies in the back that look delicious, but my cake left me dubious. The service was excellent, but I'm not sure this place is as good as Urbanspoon says. The plastic chairs and outdoor seating are also not my favourite, but I suppose it's not much to complain about. If you think differently about this place and think I've just gone on a bad day, drop me a note and a recommendation!

Owned by Greg Willis and his wife Anne, not only does this little cafe hustle and bustle at 6:30am (I'm pretty sure it opens earlier) and directly opposite from another European style cafe... and most importantly it sells something called Cinnarolls (I had every intention of taking a picture of mine, but I ate it... so pic to come) which are these upside down cinnamon rolls topped over with icing which isn't over the top sweet... just a delight for morning tea. Also try the assortment of sourdough artisan breads and a Marjolaine and Strawberry tart for a taste of France. They also serve piping hot pies and sausage rolls and a variety of freshly baked goods. It surprised me how busy this little cafe got so early in the morning on a week day when everything else seemed to be closed. Lots of bike riders and walkers come here regularly and to give you an idea of how busy this cafe gets, there are at least 4 staff serving up the delishioso pastry and coffee. It's a delight to see a cafe serve piping hot pastries, not soggy semi-cold ones this early in the morning and I will definetely be back. Note: They serve Campos coffee here!.

Ray is quite the butcher, with recommendations of meat and barbeque combination packs to how to cook your very expensive rib fillet roast for a very special occassion. Don't overcook it he said... as he pulled me aside and took me through a step by step. Much appreciated... although I did end up undercooking the piece of meat having underestimated the weight... or in my case... guestimated. I always appreciate butchers who don't feel the need to put glad wrap over all their meat because of flies or whatever reason they want to give... it just gives the impression the meat isn't fresh and no one has bought anything. These guys have the freshest reddest (not fake red, real fresh red!) meat on the market here. The prices are really good too and if you've had a hard day wheeling 2 young screaming kids around, these guys may even 'accidentally' throw in a spare crumbed lamb cutlet... because one looked kinda small. So generous in their nature, boisterous when called for, these guys know their meat and are proud to share the good meat knowledge. Will be back!

The times I've visited Barrow Lane I've been greeted with a supremely friendly smile from the guys behind the counter and they've always been happy to share tips and tricks for how to best prepare or cook the cuts you've purchased. They do have a $10 EFTPOS minimum so either grab some cash or do a bulk buy.

They are now conveniently located in the Geebung complex of shops, right across the road from the Geebung Train station. Pop over for a quick coffee before heading to your train, or grab a pack of biscuits on your way to work and surprise your office :) There is plenty of parking in front or up the side street. The owners, Paul and Annie make a range of delicious, melt-in-your-mouth biscuits made with real butter, not margarine. You can taste the difference. Not only do they have this Espresso bar and retail store, but they also sell their biscuits to wholesale clients. Their shortbread sell in 12 packs for $7 and 24 packs for $14. If you stop in for a coffee you can grab a couple of individual biscuits to enjoy there. The flavours on offer are always changing, but some of my favourites are Thai Banana & Manuka Honey, White Choc & Macadamia, Strawberry Chia Seed and Lavender, Quince & Lemon. Shortbread biscuits are their speciality, and they also sell Melting Moments, Petits Fours and gluten free Macaroons.

Hospitality workers, shift labourers and the inveterately disorganised know this fact only too well - if you end up trying to sort out dinner after the 9pm mark on a weekday you won't be able to get anything from the major supermarkets and your takeaway options will be seriously limited. That's why I appreciate the role of chains like IGA. To me, they represent the happiest compromise possible between a 24-hour convenience store and a full-blown supermarket. IGA Milton has an especially good range and boasts impressive opening hours: 6am - midnight 365 days a year (foreign readers from countries where 24-hour supermarkets are easy to find will have to excuse my excitement)! The deli here is quite gourmet, with a good selection of salamis and prosciutto as well as an array of olives. There are also some wholesome ready to eat salads and other heat-and-eat options like tortilla stacks. The nearby cheese selection showcases a well sourced selection of brie, camembert, blue and many others. I've even bought a very tasty pre-made sand crab lasagne from the refrigerated section. I suppose we have the area's high socio-economic status to thank for these epicurean touches.

My roommate laughs at me every time I say I'm popping down there for groceries and sarcastically wishes me luck getting a park, and he's not wrong. It's every man for himself when it comes to parking at this place. Horrible parking experiences aside though, this IGA is a godsend. The amount of times I've panicked when I've had nothing to take to work for lunch the next day or I've run out of milk and this place has saved me, I simply cannot count. One particular occasion I forgot it was a coworker's birthday the next day so I frantically rushed into Milton IGA at around 11pm and quickly swiped up a chocolate mud cake. It's a constant topic of conversation in my house how amazing the Baroona Road IGA's opening hours are. 6am to 12am every night; how does it get any better than that? Plus it's a TINY place, and yet I always seem to be able to find everything my heart desires. How do they manage to pack all that stuff into this tiny little space? Beats me, but they do. I prefer it to even larger supermarkets where they'd have about five hundred different brands of washing powder or mango juice because Baroona Road IGA always has what I need. For a small place, it has a ridiculously amazing selection of gourmet cheeses and healthy cooking options, plus a better range of caesar salads than I see in larger IGAs or Woolworths stores. Rather than go to Toowong's large and probably cheaper Coles, I prefer to go here. It's more convenient, and the selection is excellent. It's far better than any other chain grocery store I've experienced thus far. Everything is super easy to find whether you're in a rush or planning a larger shop. Because of Baroona Road IGA, I never go hungry. If you're a Milton/Auchenflower local, you'll find that you cherish and appreciate this IGA as much as me; if you survive the rat race of the car park out front, that is.
