There is a fountain for the kids to play in that opened in 2001 and I gather that when it is on there is a $1 entrance fee but no one was around when I visited. Other park amenities include restrooms, art, benches, and a fishing pier. In March of this year a historical marker was placed in the east part of the park relating the history of the three bridges connecting the Vero Beach mainland and beaches. Vero Beach was the first community to have a bridge to Orchid Island when one opened on Labor Day of 1920. The first cars to cross it were Model T's. In 1951 the concrete Merrill P. Barber bridge was opened and replaced by a concrete arch bridge in 1995. The marker in this park is one of twenty two in Indian County. This park also has beautiful art. There are four large mosaic pillars that represent the natural setting of Vero Beach, the ocean, the Indian River Lagoon, the upland hammock, and the wetlands. Each side of the pillar depicts a different time of day and the animals that live in each habitat. Usually water front property is taken up by million dollar mansions. It is so nice to see that Vero Beach preserved this prime piece of property so that everyone can enjoy it. You can come here to take the kids to cool off, fish, picnic, or just drink in the the glorious view of the Indian River.

There were lots of places for the kids to explore, and the grown-ups can go right along with them. Definitely would recommend having a birthday party here, or just taking your kids to play. I think my husband had just as much fun as the kids. The only thing I'd recommend doing is scanning the QR code and filling out the forms before you get there so you're not wasting time in the waiting room while your kids are dying to get in. It'll cost you around $60 for two children for two hours and their special socks.

Oh, and a big ole alligator that had no qualms about sunbathing and showing off to us onlookers! The brush has no long overgrown where he (or she) used to hang out for us all to see (and some people would feed him too ... but he was still a hunter ... and I would see him go after birds in the water which was cool and sad all at once ... like an episode of National Geographic). Since then things have changed a lot. I haven't seen any raccoons on my last few visits. I was told feral cats and fisherman ruined the population of cute animals that called this place home. They expanded on greatly to the walkway, which would be great, except that they didn't keep it wooden. It's metal and doesn't look great. It reminds me of being back up in NY with its cold appeal and just doesn't match the vibe at all. But the worse part and what is really affecting my rating is how utterly filthy it is! Sure, the area of the parking lot and ramps are nice. But walk the walkway.. there is endless trash everywhere. To the point I was taking pictures of birds down there and yes my pictured are ruined with trash but actual important thing is the poor wildlife walking around in this! Why?? Where are the funds going to clean this park? There is no excuse for this. It is unfair for us to build and use their homes for our leisure and then not treat it with the respect it deserves. Again, I went here almost everyday of my childhood and so did my family. The only "litter" you would see is some fishing string and bobbers from some people who snagged their lines where the water is. This was literally human garbage all over while looking down from the walkway that goes in and out from the parking lot to the water where the extended walkway is. I hope someone will see this and care and have this cleaned up. I reside in NY and have no idea who to contact or what to do but if someone is down there and has a point of contact ... please walk through the trees and look down at all of the trash and see if something can be done. Floridas wildlife deserves better than to live in our filth. On the plus side, it is still a peaceful place, there are two ramps to back your boat in, the parking lot is huge, there is an area next to the ramps to clean your fish and such, with a working hose. There's crab around which is fun for the kids to see (and adults if you're me), and when the sun is going down you can see gators swimming about by watching for their eyes. You can watch for smaller pretty creatures too in the flowers, like Florida lubbers (colorful and gentle grasshopper of a larger size). The best way to see all of these is to be still and quiet and mindful of them (which I find best achieved going alone). It is truly a lovely zen place but please please please clean it up and if you're visiting put your garbage in the appropriate garbage cans or bring it home with you. Don't make the lazy choice to litter. So many creatures die or are critically injured from our litter, you just don't see it happen as you drop it and walk away. It takes no extra effort just to walk your trash to garbage can. Be kind to our planet :)

Smaller groups can make use of three family pavilions with grills. My favorite part of the park was the boardwalk that leads you through the natural habitat of the St. Lucie River. Fishing is permitted and you can get a great view of the wildlife that calls the river home. The scenic views of the river add a serene backdrop that enhances the overall peaceful atmosphere of the park. Birdwatching is a popular activity here, with various species often spotted along the riverbank. This park is a hidden gem that has something for everyone to enjoy.

We paddled thru the scenic St. Lucie River on the North Fork and observing all the gorgeous oak hammocks bordering either side. Amazing how tranquil the trip is, you would have thought you were in a time warp, because this surely represents how Olde Florida used to be. Just think it is in our backyard and it is FREE. White City Park has a Pirate playground for the kids, boat ramps, fishing access, plenty of picnic tables and much more. #lovingtreasurecoastlife #ftpierce #treasurecoast

A small museum with some beautiful artwork and an interesting story…read more While visiting Fort Pierce, we decided to stop at the A.E. Backus Museum & Gallery and found it to be a very nice museum with an interesting story behind the artist. Admission was only $5 per person during our visit, and there is a parking lot directly in front of the museum, so parking and getting inside were both easy. The museum is all on one floor and is not particularly large, but there is quite a bit to see. The staff was very friendly and took the time to explain the layout of the museum, the different areas depicting parts of A.E. Backus's life and career, the artwork that was for sale, and the gift shop. There are numerous signs inside stating that photography is not allowed, so keep that in mind during your visit. One thing I would definitely recommend is watching the approximately 20-minute movie about Backus. It does a very good job of explaining his life, his attitude toward art, his work, and particularly his willingness to encourage and help other artists. I especially enjoyed learning about his relationship with and support of the group of African American artists who became known as the Florida Highwaymen. Backus was an excellent Florida landscape artist, but I found the story of how he helped and encouraged others to be just as interesting as his artwork. We enjoyed looking at the paintings and learning more about both him and Florida art history. Before you leave, make sure you also take a walk around the outside of the building because there is additional artwork there that would be easy to miss. Overall, this is a very nice small museum, reasonably priced, and well worth a visit while you are in Fort Pierce. Enjoy!

We spent a solid two hours there and it was enough to see everything this time of year. The only thing is they didn't have a "special"/rotating art exhibit so that may have shortened our time there some. If you're in the area then I recommend coming here. It's so beautiful this time of year, although the water is cold but it gets better as you acclimate. The beauty of Florida is its 80 degrees in the middle of November. :)) Fish jumping, the boyfriend throwing out a line, dragonflies hunting, birds and bugs doing their thing.
