Unfortunately our public school system and kids have paid the price. Cape Henry is a fine school with good teachers the high tuition is probably a good thing because it keeps out the undesirables. This is a pool that garnered 9 world records just a head of the Bejing Olympics, where Michael Phelps got his historic 8 gold medals. Those outside the sport possibly never gave a thought that a pool could even be disassembled, trucked across the country and put back together again for competition. Let me assure you that community leaders in the Richmond area had a plan for this historic tub. A plan that would end up having an incredible price tag of 22 million. This facility would host world class swimming competitions and bring awareness to water safety in the Greater Richmond area. The pool's physical location would be in Chesterfield Co. in Ukrops Park. The naming rights would go to Collegiate School, a private school in Richmond acquired major funding for the venture. However, it is the Ukrop family who provided the major funding, and land that the CSAC would eventually set on to make this all a reality. The USA club team Poseidon Swimming host meets and practices out of the aquatic center. Poseidon with it's significant fund raising was considered serious player in making this dream come true for not only for Richmond, but for Virginia. The plan that had been agonized over a four year time frame became a reality March 13, 2012. This spectacular swimming facility boost an eight lane 50 meter pool which is the olympic trials structure. Not to be left out an 8 lane 25 yd warm up/cool down pool for competition and a warm therapy pool. Spectators are not left out in the 7,000 sq ft mezzanine that can hold up to 700 fans. Parking is plentiful all around the building. Even new exit ramps off the highway were installed to make it easy to access the CSAC. This aquatic facility is a shining example of a dream one community had to bring not only world class competition to Virginia, but also the awareness and importance of water safety. The presence and prestige of a pool of this stature is a tremendous economic boom for the Richmond area too. The GRAP Greater Richmond Aquatic Partnership manages the pool. Memberships are available to those in the community. However, my knowledge of the school is that it has a solid reputation. The portion of the school which houses the theater is definitely newer than the other portion of the campus. My guess is within 10 years, but this is only a guess. The parking lot and surrounding area where I parked was well maintained. Landscaping was fine, but nothing special in my opinion. Upon walking into the lobby of the theater I was immediately impressed by it's simple elegance. Not huge, but presented very well with a nice size chandelier in the lobby. There is an area to serve refreshments at intermission which worked out well later in the evening. Restrooms were adjacent to the left. I found them new, or updated unsure. They were clean, had soap and paper towels. Upon walking in the theater I was awe struck by the beauty of the venue. Seating for around 350 on red fold down chairs which proved very comfortable for the performance. Natural wood surrounds stage opening. Although the stage was not as wide as larger facilities it worked pretty good. However, the cast of "Honk" was somewhat crowded. Lighting and sound seemed appropriate the smaller theater. Again, review is NOT for the school only the theater. I really enjoyed myself and the Norfolk Collegiate School theater. Our family had a great time and really enjoyed the show too!

If you go there don't ever dare to question or advocate for your child or you'll be canceled, which is funny since we were asked to advocate on behalf of the school year end and year out. They will tell you what you want to hear, but dig deep in your research, ask around, buyer beware. They are no longer the Mighty Oaks. Oh, and they have the audacity to charge Norfolk Academy tuition levels for far fewer academic opportunities, support, and extracurricular activities for your children. The only thing different is that there is more homework and the lunch is different. I am learning things already that I have learned in lower grades at my old public school. The real reason I am giving my school one star is because there is a lot of bullying going on. Involving me and many other students. I am the type of person to go to the staff to tell about bullying such as the guidance counselor, principal, and the dean of students. I went many times in the past year but nothing was ever solved. I have gone maybe 3-4 times this year and nothing is being solved. This year about me and other students getting bullied. Last year my mother called and that's when they actually handled it. If you are bringing your child to Norfolk collegiate for no bullying your gonna get a lot of it. And if your getting bullied bad the school will do nothing about it. They put online that they have 0% bullying, but that is not the truth. The school acts as if there is no bullying but two years a lot of kids were physically bullied by someone such as getting pushed into lockers and the school has covered it up. So I recommend to not bring your child to Norfolk collegiate because it is not a good environment to keep your child happy.

When my wife and I moved to Richmond from Raleigh in 2010 in some ways it was like starting over…read more We had both lived in North Carolina for 17 & 14 years respectively and the change while welcomed presented many challenges, especially with 2 young children. One of the first things we did when we arrived was to seek out recommendations for a good pediatrician. From that point we had the amazing fortune of being given the contact information for Joan at Open Arms Christian Preschool by our children's new doctor. The pediatrician we ended up seeing knew that with a diagnosis of autism and being on the spectrum our son would be in great hands and care at Open Arms Christian Preschool. The nervousness we felt while driving to meet with Joan for an initial tour of the preschool was immediately forgotten as we were greeted with the kindest most genuine energy and welcome. Within 5 minutes of touring Open Arms we knew we had found the right place. In our time spent at Open Arms we had both of our kids enrolled. Even when we moved to Glen Allen after the first year I fixed my work schedule to be able to drive 40 minutes back and forth for drop off and pick up. Our oldest child is on the spectrum and has been diagnosed with autism. He is high functioning but to this day has sensory issues as well as social issues. Joan went above and beyond to work with us day in and day out, gave us guidance, put us in touch with different professionals and organizations and always made herself available. She was always a phone call away and as with any situation involving children the communication factor was key. There was even a point where an additional staff member was brought in to help. For all of these reasons my wife and I will forever be grateful. I could really go on and on raving about this preschool as we had a 4 year run there. There is not one negative thing I can say about our experience at Open Arms. If there was I would be honest and post it. There were times when we had reports come home about our oldest and quite frankly a few times where we thought, 'that's it they are going to ask us to leave'... but that never happened. And I believe the communication between the school and us was a vital part of our unique situation. Communication is always key. The tuition is very reasonable for what each family receives. Activities, special trips and guest 'speakers' just to name a few of the things which go on. Art comes home regularly and the kids are also in a true learning environment which is such a plus as they get ready to make the transition to elementary school. If I could give this preschool 10 stars I would. If I could give Joan and her amazing staff 10 stars I would. I have given Joan permission to give out my phone number to anyone who has parent to parent questions. We will be forever grateful for the foundation which Open Arms Christian Preschool has given both of our kids. And we will especially be forever grateful for the added support we received to help us set our first born and only son on the path to being able to deal with his autism related issues. While Open Arms was just one piece of the support chain we received it was a vital part which helped us truly make the difficult and important decisions about our situation without added stress. In January of last year, our son began having seizures - the first in his young 2 year old life. We were terrified and concerned about the present and future health, well-being and development of our child. Not only did the team at Open Arms show their love and support for us, but the families surround us with friendship and prayer! Our son Eli had a rough 4 months; spending over 80% of the time in the hospital. During that time, we received weekly emails and texts from the Director, Eli's teachers and parents checking in and asking how they could help. When Eli was stable enough to return, the entire team at Open Arms worked with us to give Eli a chance to come back to school - even part-time. I met with the Director, Joan Brennan, and his teachers regularly to discuss his development, areas of challenge and prognosis. They worked diligently to ensure that Eli had a supportive environment where he, and the other children, could thrive. They took care of our son and our entire family during one of the most traumatic times in our life. Eli has now been seizure free for several months and returned back to school full-time this year. Before starting the year, Joan and the teachers worked with my husband and I to determine where Eli might best thrive (in the older 2 or younger 3 classroom). They have walked with us over the last several months as we have evaluated his growth and development. During parent teacher conferences this week, his teachers shared with us areas of challenge for Eli and some options to help him thrive. While it is always tough to hear that your child may not be thriving and may need additional evaluation, the way that they lovingly and supportively discussed the challenges with me made me quickly aware that they were on our team. They wanted what was best for Eli's development and wanted to provide the right opportunities for he and the other children in the school. As a parent who is diligently involved in the well being of her child, I feel like I have a team of support at Open Arms. It is a community! I learned about Open Arms from a friend that entrusted the development of her two children to the school. Having now experienced the great support and student-to-teacher ratios she encountered, I have openly recommended the school to other families. Including families that have been dealing with issues such as epilepsy. While the school is not a school for children needing one-on-one shadowing or those with aggression and anger issues, it is a school for families that need a little extra support or those that simply want the best environment and greatest opportunity for the growth of their children. The Sir Christopher Wren Building at William & Mary is the oldest college building still standing in the United States and the oldest of the restored public buildings in Williamsburg. It was constructed between 1695 and 1700, before Williamsburg was founded, when the capital of the colony of Virginia was still located at Jamestown, and the tract of land between the James and York rivers which was to become Williamsburg was populated by crude timber buildings and known as "Middle Plantation." The Wren Building has been gutted by fire three times -- in 1705, 1859 and 1862. Each time the interior of the structure was rebuilt, and for more than three centuries, it has been "the soul of the College." In the building, generations of William & Mary students have attended classes and lectures, enjoyed meals and attended classes. The most honored tradition however of graduation exercises takes place here. The reconstruction is not expected to be complete until the 2026-2027 school year.

The colonial architecture from England is a prominent theme throughout the campus. The Wren Building (perhaps the oldest college building in the United States) appears similar in design to the Royal Hospital of Chelsea (in London). The Sadler Center is a modern hub for student activities and socializing. It's a great building to visit if students are on campus as it can give you a sense of the campus vibe. The undergraduate students appear to outnumber graduate students (the law school is on a separate campus). I noticed one possible downside. While the campus is lovely, it does appear to be a "bubble" since it is physically isolated from a traditional community of local residents. Being physically next to Colonial Williamsburg - a mecca for tourists and Virginia middle school tour groups - may seem appealing at first. But it could grow old after a year or two.
