We really enjoyed visiting this beautiful historic church in the Old Town area of Munich. The crypt below is definitely worth exploring too as it is the final resting place of many members of the Bavarian royal family from the 16th to 20th centuries. The Church itself is an amazing sight inside and with artistic and religious treasures all around. Its also a great place to worship and much less crowded with tourists than the Frauenkirche nearby. read more

This huge renaissance church, completed in 1597, is famous for its huge barrel-vaulted roof and as the burial place of King Ludwig II and his brother, King Otto. The Church was commissioned by William V, Duke of Bavaria, as a centre for the Counter-Reformation, and a base for the Jesuits, who were already established in Munich. Building began in 1583, but the church itself had to be partially rebuilt after the tower collapsed through the choir in 1590: ironically, it was the huge vault - then the widest after St Peters in Rome - that people feared would fall. Rebuilding began immediately with a new choir and large transept, and an elaborate facade with statues depicting the lineage of the Bavarian Royal Family. It's early baroque style influenced many other churches, but it also incorporates many motifs of the Counter-Reformation within its decoration: the transept vaults appears as triumphal arches, and the bronze statue of St Michael on the main facade shows him fighting a humanoid devil - often taken as an allegory of fighting for the faith against the Protestants. Badly damaged in World War Two, it's restoration was completed in 1983. It remains one of the largest renaissance churches, north of the Alps. King Ludwig II and his brother King Otto are buried in the crypt, alongside other Wittelsbachs. Access to this is via stairs in the south (right-hand) transept. There's a fee of €2, but they don't accept small change and photography is not permitted. I don't mind that, or paying a fee, but the person taking the money had to the least welcoming and grumpiest individual in Munich. Not much of a Christian welcome, I'm sad to report. read more

St. Michael's is a Jesuit church that was built in the late 1500's. From its impressive architecture to its ornate religious ornaments, the church is gorgeous and grand. However, despite its grandeur and the heavy flow of traffic it receives each day from visitors, there's a sense of serenity here that can especially be felt if you take a moment and sit down in the pews. My favorite feature of this church is its crypt which is the final resting place of the Bavarian Royals, notably, King Ludwig II of Bavaria. The crypt isn't large and the caskets are all in one room, so it can get a little "cozy" as more people visit. Although the church is free to enter, there is a €2 entry fee to the crypt. St. Michael's is still active with daily religious services, events, and concerts. Schedules for these can be found in their free pamphlets. With many churches in the Altstadt area -- and all within close proximity of one another -- if you only have time to see one, visit St. Michael's. read more

A gorgeous old church in the city center. St Michael is a Jesuit church, the largest Renaissance church north of the Alps. The style of the building had an enormous influence on Southern German early Baroque architecture. Built in the late 1500's this is a beautiful church in the centre of town. The crypt holds tombs of some of the members of Wittelsbach dynasty and for a small fee you can visit it. A nice quiet place to visit when in town. read more

St. Michael church might seem a bit humble from outside, but once you walk in, you will be amazed by all the little details. That was what happended to me. I was completely carried away by its style. It just like most of the big in Germany, you could find many thing here that you also could find elsewhere. But it is still one of the cool sights for the visitors in Munich. Although the church located in the middle of the city, the location always busy and a lot things going on, it is quite easy to miss out because of its look. So when you want to visit this place just keep your eye open. It is free for entrance. Inside the church there is some infos that you can get to know this place a bit better. You are allow to take pictures here as long as you keep it quiet and no flash light. Around the church has many different cafés, restaurants and shops. It never lacked of things to do. read more

St. Michael's Church (St. Michaelskirche) is a must stop for any visitor to central Munich. We visited on Dec. 23rd as we were touring the Christmasmarkets in central Munich. When you've been walking and walking, this church is a very convenient place for rest, peace and contemplation. The church is immense. Its barrel-vaulted ceiling is the largest outside of St. Peter's in Rome. The church was built by the Jesuits as part of the Counter-Reformation. A painting of St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, is on the right. I walked down to the crypt, but didn't go for the 2 euros crypt view. The church itself is breath-taking. The church is right next to Marienplatz on Kaufingerstrasse. The iconic Rathaus (Globckenspiel) etc. are nearby. It would be nice to catch a mass here. read more

This is one of the few churches I entered during my trip to Munich. I wanted to see the crypt, which contains Ludwig II's coffin. I had passed by this church many times, and just didnt know what it contained. During my second trip to Munich I had to see it. The crypt is only 2 euros. There are many royals buried in there. Ludwig's coffin is big. Very easily accessible. there were no lines. photos are allowed. it wasn't crowded inside. it was peaceful. i recommend seeing it. read more

We visited the day after Christmas. It was crowded getting into the church, but once inside, plenty of space to explore, pray, etc. Such amazing architecture and general presence of peacefulness. read more
