The church is really Cockermouth's centerpiece ... not only is it on banks of the River Cocker, its steeple is visible almost anywhere in town. It's a church with rich of history ... you'd expect nothing less from a church endowed by Henry Percy, the Earl of Northumberland, in 1395. Yes, that's some 624 years ago (!!!!). While most of the original medieval church was torn down, a "new" church was erected in 1771. A fire destroyed most of that one, but version 3.0 was erected and dedicated in 1854. When at All Saints, don't forget to check out the original 1854 Bible and Prayer Book used in its dedication ceremony, as well as the ornate, beautiful Caen stone pulpit built for that dedication. Included in All Saints' history is Fletcher Christian -- leader of the famed mutiny on The Bounty -- who was a student at the All Saints grammar school. As was William Wordsworth, the famed poet who helped lead the British literature's Romantic Age in the early 1800s and was England's Poet Laureate for 7 years. The history of the Wordsworth family is all around the Church. Both William and his sister Dorothy (a great writer in her own right) were baptized and worshipped at All Saints. Their father (John) is buried in the churchyard. The stunning memorial stained-glass window (the one front and center, by the altar) was is informally called the "Wordsworth Memorial Window." Famed Victorian stained glass designer and creator Charles Eamer Kempe created much of the other stained glass you'll find at All Saints. The best time is early or late on a clear day, when the sunlight shoots a spectrum of color into the church. Amazing. I could spend forever on the history, but it's still an active Anglican Church. It's very welcoming and very family-friendly. Services are Sunday at 9:30, and if you're there on the second Sunday of the month, you'll hear the choir sing traditional Eucharist hymns. Whether attending or just visiting, it's a wonderful place showing that England's beauty and history even extends to small, tight-knit communities like Cockermouth.

Not enough comedy, or too much, because at last night's gig there was only 8 people and the venue holds significantly more than that. It was a shame really, as it didn't really help to create a great atmosphere for comedy, but I got the feeling that if it had been a little fuller then it could've been a really nice gig. The staff are all very friendly and the prices are pretty cheap, with cinema tickets under £5!

Its most famous connection is to Fletcher Christian (the Bounty mutineer), who was Christened in the church, and his father has a table tomb in the graveyard. Also notable are members of poet William Wordsworth's family (Wordsworth lived 2 km down the road in Cockermouth). His son John was Vicar of St. Bridget's Church for 40 years. The graveyard is quite stunning, with more than 700 monuments. The interior is also beautiful with painted plasterwork and timber work ceilings by William Butterfield, a famed architect of the mid to late 1800s. The ceilings, much of which was recently restored, are unlike any that I have seen in England's churches. The first time I visited was in 1983, the year I lived in Brigham. I must say that when I recently returned, the church looked even more beautiful and well-kept as I remember.
