The end result is, what I believe, an example of how people can serve a need contextually without losing substance. I suppose coming from a lay person, that should be taken with a grain of salt. But, I've been to mission starts that are awkward, full of random drum solos followed by the blood and body (communion) being randomly passed out and then literally thrown back down on the table. No lie. Moving on... COTA has a coffee hour before the service where people mingle and have some great coffee (each cup is brewed by hand) or chai (a secret recipe of a member) along with treats -- they have a suggested donation if you're able. ....Oh, the coffee and tea alone was worth the trip.... If you want some great drinks at 4:30 pm on Sundays, head down that way- totally worth it even if you don't stay for worship. COTA is housed in an arts facility so there aren't pews involved. Instead, they have folding chairs that aren't uncomfortable as I anticipated. If you have a sensitive bum, there are some couches in the back. The whole service had various members participating, it was a well curated event. Although they didn't have bulletins, I didn't feel lost or overwhelmed since people around me were watching and participating. I could follow their lead. During a time called 'open space' we ventured around the room and outside to participate in various activities that were focused Pentecost. Since there were so many options, some activities/prayers/readings hit home. I enjoyed this time to explore the space (I added pictures to the review) and to once again prepare myself for worship. Since I like to talk about customer service, I'll say that we were greeted and directed as soon as we walked in for coffee hour and by several people in various church capacities once we went upstairs for worship. Great service, great people, working together. It was not only a relaxed experience, but one I hope to repeat very soon.

I am used to a more upbeat worship singing and live music and Modern Christian songs. The songs at Christ the rock are Slow, kind of dry. Pastor does a great job preaching, however he too is a bid dry and never leaves his podium. If you want to bring in new blood to the church, you're going to have to step it up! I had to try another worship center as I had a hard time staying awake.

For $1 you were able to enter the event and try all kinds of great salsas: salsa verde, salsa de chile de arbol, una salsa de pipian, pico de gallo, salsa de mango, salsa de chile guajillo, salsa de mole, etc. After trying everything and having a pop, I was pleasantly full, but, I still had just enough space for an order of tacos de carne asada ($4.50). Great salsas and some Mexican street food. You can't beat that. I was pleasantly full and content. Que rico! (I didn't stay for all of the dance and went to play soccer with some friends.) The worship service features a spectacular new pipe organ, as well as occasional guest musicians. It describes itself as the church that feeds people, and it truly does, both spiritually and physically. Prior to the pandemic, it hosted a free dinner for anyone in need every Tuesday. Now in pandemic times, it still prepares hundreds of meals every Tuesday that are taken to area homeless shelters. In addition, they host a rotating tent city encampment for four months each year. An exceptional place with exceptional people.

The fixtures are nothing special and there is bare piping that connects the receptacle to the wall (very cheap looking). They need to clean the room once an hour but they aren't doing that yet. The parishioners ("church people") are friendly to each other and seem very pleased to be alone in their social groups. It's like a robotic event that everybody does but no one knows why. This is a real turn-off The music was pleasant and gently distracting. The average age of the people is roughly 45 years. There are so many better ways to spend a Sunday than going in here. I can honestly say that I've never attending another church with such a strong spiritual emphasis that seemed so genuinely interested in whole and in part in helping its members develop as spiritual humans, in whatever path they set for themselves. The best part of the services in these 3 months has EASILY been the kids books - each service a different kids book is read to the congregation before the little ones are sent off, and the content of the books is so amazing I've started buying the books to share with others regularly. Thank you, KUUF for offering a home to safely explore my (our) spirituality that FEELS like belonging, acceptance, encouragement and most of all... My wife and I have been looking for a "spiritual outlet" for several years and I'm pretty sure we've found it in the Kitsap Unitarian Universalist Fellowship today. I was raised Roman Catholic with nuns in habits and a strict Irish Priest - the whole stereotype Catholic thing. I never felt right being in a Catholic church and had a real hard time with all the dogma that comes with that religion. It just never really "did the job it was supposed to do" for me. In the early 80s I started to consider Judaism, and in 2002 converted to Reform Judaism and that worked for me for over 10 years until it started feeling just like Catholicism in many ways all over again. Despite not as much dogma as Christianity, I never really felt like I fit in or that Judaism truly fit me. It just stopped "doing the job it was supposed to do" for me. I phrase it this way based on the sermon I heard this morning from Rev. Jessica Star Rockers entitled "Letting Go of God". She spoke as if the words were aimed right at me - telling us how in her own spiritual journey, the "old Gods just weren't doing the job anymore" and I really connected to that in such a direct way. I've tried "alternatives to the old churches" before - but one of them felt no compunction about bringing politics into the sermon in a big way, even using names of elected leaders. Political tensions should NOT be a part of a spiritual service. I want to have an experience to ESCAPE that stuff and focus on inner peace and being with others wanting the same. Another church we tried that proclaimed to be non-denominational ended up preaching about how Jesus Christ is this that and the other and took on a very Christian stance - a god that to me "no longer did the job for me". It felt very denominational. But Kitsap UU is NOTHING like that, at least based on our experience there this morning. We both felt warmly welcomed, not "smothered in attention" as newcomers often are or enduring stares from longtime members at the "new people". We were welcomed without any strings. The music was wonderful, with a really pretty trumpet piece by Mike the music director. There was a very entertaining "Children's Story" segment on the physics of energy, complete with a pendulum demo by a scientist member - all to equate laws of the physics of energy to our spiritual energy. It was really cool! The views out the sanctuary windows are inspiring just by themselves - moss-draped ancient trees flowing down a deep wooded ravine, with nothing but nature to see. I spent the "moment of silence" (more like minutes!) just contemplating the quiet of the surroundings on a beautiful sunny morning. Knock on wood, but we plan to make this our "spiritual home" at least once a month and get to know more people as we get more acquainted with the church, the people, and the experience. But for now, if you're looking for a place to feel welcomed no matter who you are or what your background is or what you believe, this well could be that place.
