The trenches level staff here is amazing, they are positive, optimistic, friendly, supportive and caring in spite of the harsh political climate and dismal local economic trend. It's simultaneously heartwarming and heart wrenching to volunteer one's time in a place like this, the children are fun, interesting, cute, and they have so much going against them. The school is the safest place in their world, and there is all sorts of learning going on here in spite of under-funding and a Soviet style bureaucratic structure for the overall school system. The process to get into here or similar schools as a volunteer is a bit time consuming but don't let that stop you, it's really rewarding. The staff and teachers are just so wonderful it's pretty inspiring. Make sure you lock your car.
