There's not even much of the rock quarry visible that gave the place its name. So IF you're heading to Rock, why not stop at this rather nice restaurant which offers brilliant views of the bay. The menu is split into three time schedules, breakfast, lunch (12 to 6 p.m.) and dinner (after 6). The range is a bit higher key than the usual pub grub, and the chicken breast (topped with bacon and cheese) I opted for was rather nice indeed. The beer range is limited, especially on the hand-pumps - similar to the Rock Road Bar & Grill which inhabits the same building - and they may indeed be one item. Korev and some international lagers are available though. The view is indeed splendid and the staff were really nice when I visited. The outside seating can be covered, but it was not on this rather warm and sunny June day. Since there are very few alternatives here, I'd give The Rock Inn thumbs up. There is truly no real reason to go to Rock in the first place, but this one might be it.

The Towan Blystra (christened after the ancient Cornish name for Newquay, "Tewynplustri",…read moreanglicised to Towan Blystra) is the beach town's popular, pre-eminent JD Wetherspoon pub, with all the trimmings: cleaner than average toilets, (far!) cheaper than average booze, cheaper than average (but generally decent) food, a pleasant outside seating area, but - alas, also: a generous helping of lowlifes and riff-raff, especially towards the time the sun is setting on Newquay. Located not far from the Great Western Hotel, it's very well connected by bus (and that's important for people who drink like the British drink on late evenings). Atmosphere is generally relaxed, but can get a little more rambunctious as the evenings progress - due to the local boozers for whom this is one of the more popular waterholes. Tourists should generally be careful! But the prices for booze and food are the most competitive in all of Newquay (It's a Spoon after all!) - and Newquay is not a cheap place to spend your holidays. Rotating guest ales guarantee that the friendly patron (along with the less friendly) will find fresh and well-kept beers available at all times, but during peak hours ordering food and drinks can be a test for your patience, as Spoons are notoriously understaffed. The menu is streamlined, you'll basically get the same stuff at all the Spoons. Only prices vary a bit. Watch out for the Mo-Fr & Sunday daily "Clubs", which offer meal deals for a specific selection of dishes. General advice for tourists on weekend nights: Don't go there, seek out a less busy place. Otherwise, not a bad option in Newquay.

The layout of the pub clearly indicates an emphasis on food rather than booze, but upon my visit I found the menu rather disappointingly small and conventional. Because of the location and atmosphere it is busy with families and groups of (mostly) younger people. The "restaurant pitch" is further reinforced by the generous layout of the bars for drinks and food. The range of ales is, again, dominated by St. Austell Brewery, and they're kept nice and fresh. But the highlight of The Fort Inn is its spacious outside seating to the back, from which you get a splendid view of Towan Beach (and the Great Western Beach in the background). Unfortunately the furnishings could be more comfortable - it is a strain to sit at those big, raw tables the way they're constructed - you simply cannot stretch out your legs. I've seen these kinds of benches at other pubs, too - maybe it's their way of telling you not to linger. Atmosphere is friendly, clean, "open".

It offers a good range of beers (for once, not all St. Austell's!), including several hand-pumped ales from Tintagel Brewery. It is a HUGE place with two different outside seating areas - a bigger one on the front and a very small on on the back (see photos). There's a pool table near the bar area. During my visit only a handful of people were there, but it was still early in the evening on a weekday. Bar staff were very friendly, and the place has a pleasant feel to it, although I can imagine it gets quite loud during busier times. Beer prices are rather civil and lower than average for Newquay. Great pubs in Newquay are few and far between, since most of them cater to visitors from England and abroad and are very touristy. This one is the opposite: A really good community pub.

The Yelp reviews were mediocre, but we were tired and ready to put our feet up. I am glad we did! The service was fast and friendly and the food was really, really good. My mother had the shepherd's pie and I had the chicken tikka. We got dessert- sticky toffee pudding- to go, and our waitress was nice enough to give us extra clotted cream on the side! Really a nice change of pace from the touristy side of Newquay. Felt like we were eating dinner with the locals.

The staff are very friendly and approachable with food available in the restaurant. The food is extremely good and is prepared using only the finest local ingredients. Overall Castaways has reached a niche in the market for the frequent visiting yachties. The food and drink is quite expensive although there are not many other establishments to go to for a change.

The music is a mixture of rock and grunge, appealing to the students from the local campus and locals that follow the local surf scene.
