St Peter's has been her local church since living in the area and I've attended Sunday services here - I've always been made to feel welcome by the local congregation. The church building is postcard perfect for what you imagine a pretty English parish church would look llke. The Lord was smiling on Lesley on Saturday - the rain cleared up and the sun came out just as the service ended and it was time for photos. The inside is lovely too with exposed wooden beams. The wedding service was a joyful occasion shared with friends and family. The cupcake reception immediately after the service was a novel idea and helped to keep the guests entertained, fed and watered as the photos were taking place. The electric keyboard was of good quality. I was lucky to be asked to provide some piano music when the when register was signed. The regular members of the church made us guests feel most welcome. It feels like an active local church. Congratulations to Lesley and Andrew!

This is a huge, majestic church just on the edge of Bolton's town centre. It's a fantastic contrast to the tackiness of the town centre just a few metres away. The church is surrounded by a pleasant graveyard and grassy area. Inside, the church is fantastic. The roofing is all wooden, with exposed beams. It's bursting with character and actually better than Manchester Cathedral in my opinion. Great church. So big that I kept having to go back and back and back to take a picture of it.

St Mary's church has always been a great church for weddings, christenings and sadly funerals too…read moreof which I have been to many. The size of the church internally is ideal for weddings and seats hundreds of people. It stands proud on the outskirts of the shopping area and is always nice in the summer months with a clock you can see for miles. Bell ringing can always be heard across the valley and functions, services and clubs use the church on a regular basis.

I walk past this church every time I wander into the…read morecentre of Manchester and I've been lucky enough to spy on a couple of services on my travels. I have to say, in the heart of Salford's very here and there Chapel Street I never expected to see a church quite so beautiful. As the daughter of a scientist I'm about as agnostic as you can get (I'm a bit of a fate and everything-happens-for-a-reason person, thus I suppose I cannot call myself entirely atheist), but I've always appreciated churches on an aesthetic level. This one is particularly stunning. Even the grounds are lovely to walk around, they've made such an effort with the plants and all the original features are in place. Inside it's even more impressive, ornate and beautiful with gorgeous lighting and fixtures. We're lucky to have a good few pretty churches in the area, and this is certainly one worth seeing.

It is a rather impressive Cathedral overall which was built from the 1400s to the 1800s with a tower height of 135 feet. It really does feel that this Cathedral is trying to squeeze as much money as it can out of worshippers which is a real shame, examples include the photography permit" scheme really is ridiculous. To be able to take photos inside they charge a £1 fee, which is alongside a suggested donation to enter the cathedral of £3. I do think it is slightly hidden too and the gardens around the Cathedral obviously doesn't compare to others including Birmingham. For me, the cash-centred nature with staff inside who seem more interested in getting a few pounds here and there from visitors and trying their best at intimidating people rather than being friendly isn't what a Cathedral is about. 2* Review number #3200.

A stunning church on the edge of Deansgate, it's an incredible piece of architecture inside and out. There's painstakingly carved elements around the whole building, lots of impressive stained glass windows and original sculptures. Whilst it's mainly used as a church, there are regular art exhibitions here and occasional multi-media events like the festival I went to where a group of electronic musicians matched the vision of the building with extraordinary sounscapes. One used so much bass it felt like the pews shook! For those wanting to worship over the festive season, there's a service and communion at 11.30pm Christmas Eve and a Christmas Day Euchachrist at 10.30am.

Sheffield Cathedral is located right in the heart of the city, it has such prominence that it is…read moreprobably one of the only places I've found and visited in the city centre to have over ten reviews. It is served by Cathedral Supertram stop, which is one of three stations on the whole network to serve all the tram lines, it is within walking distance of The Moor, Orchard Square, Fargate etc. This makes it a rather cool place to mark my 2300th Yelp review. The site has been home to many Catholic symbols, churches and places of worship since the 12th century to as far as 1966, so the process of this historic, the cathedral has developed over so many years, it does, however, seem slightly more modern than other cathedrals, and not in a good way, it lacks the old, beautiful infrastructure compared to other Cathedrals, which makes it less impressive compared to Westminster and York's alternatives for examples, but still for sure doesn't make it unimpressive. It is a Grade I listed building, one of five in the city of Sheffield which includes the town hall. More information to make this a historic site could be used after all this has been home to worship for over 1000 years which is an impressive feet not reached by most. Although it isn't up there with the most beautiful and impressive Cathedrals of the UK, it still is a nice, historic building right in the centre of Sheffield, making it one of the nicer views on the entire Supertram network as well. 3* - Pretty much average but an asset for a small city like South Yorkshire's Sheffield.

One of the lesser English cathedrals…read more On my journeys in Britain I have been to many impressive cathedrals: Liverpool (old and new), Norwich, Colchester, Worcester, York, Leeds (Minster), Peterborough (very different), Gloucester - you name them. My possible favorite is the mighty, beautiful Ely Cathedral. Sheffield Cathedral, frankly, does not compare - architecturally (its tacked-on modern part doesn't help much), nor in terms of the art and church objects inside. It is rather plain. Not ugly, but plain. Small-ish, too. And comparatively "naked". If you're in the city for a day's visit you might want to pop in anyway. But it wouldn't be worth the travel just for the sake of this building. Unless of course you're there for some religious event or concert.

Residents of fashionable Marylebone could be forgiven for doing a double-take driving east out of…read moreManchester when, tucked away, close to the Roman Catholic Cathedral and the University of Salford, they see the double of their own church of St Mary's, Wyndham Place. They will not, however, have teleported home. The church they see is in fact St Philip's Chapel Street, in Salford. Both were Commissioner's churches, both built around 1822-24, and both were given the same design by Sir Robert Smirke, in a flagrant example of architectural recycling. The design is Greek Revival: an impressively handsome semi-circular portico of Ionic columns is surmounted by a classic 'pepper-pot' bell tower. Behind, the church has a conventional rectangular plan, with tall round headed windows above a row of smaller straight-headed windows. It is a wonderful addition to the local streetscape, and a Grade II* listed building. Inside, the church was designed as a classic preaching box: large galleries on three sides would have allowed seating for a congregation of 1,000. However, the interior was re-ordered in 1895 by J Medland Taylor, to provide a larger square sanctuary, to provide for more ritualised worship (although the galleries survived). An interesting feature is that it retains it original organ, made by Renn & Boston in 1829. The church is now home to a new partnership, with a 'plant' from the New Wine network of churches, with a charge to reinvigorate the mission of the church in the area for the 21st Century. The church provides services in both traditional and more lively charismatic evangelical styles.

The church's purpose was not limited to the spread of gospel. It was one of the so-called "Waterloo churches" intended to prevent the dissemination of the dangerous ideas of the French Revolution. Bizarrely, it was consecrated on St Matthew Day, and it didn't go without a few hiccups. One notices the imposing design of the church, and it is a particularly fine site, if seen from Chapel St. The commissioners wanted Smirke to place the grand porch and circular tower in the south end of the church, rather than the western end. In his turn, Smirke wanted his church in classical style. All in all, this is one of the most original buildings in Greater Manchester, and apparently boasts a copy on Leonardo's Last Supper.
