The gentleman working there 6/27 (grey beard) asked kindly, "Do you mind if I ask what made your day hard?". Have you ever heard of a "thrift store" holding an item? Have you ever heard of a thrift store that sold a $10 item and held it for a customer, but yet still put it on a shelf to be sold? Well it happens here. I just moved from Portland Or., to MPLS Mn., and I'm starting over. Whatever didn't fit in my car, didn't come with me. I found a place, but its an old porch that has been retrofitted into a room. that means stone tiles for a floor. I'm sleeping on rock in my sturdy lil' sleeping bag. Waiting till my property gets shipped here. So I went down to the local thrift store to find something better. I found a blow-up mattress for $10. Figured that it was good enough till my bed got shipped here. Went to pay for it, and the cashier told me it was "on-hold" I wasn't allowed to buy the item that was on a shelf to be sold. I got upset, so I left and thought about it. Why would a thrift store hold an item that was only $10? So I went back. Its really painful to sleep on this stone, so if i could find a cheap fix, then I'd like to see it happen for me. When I got there, and started asking if it was policy to hold a $10 item, and I was told that it was not. However that all changed when I went to confront the cashier. Suddenly, the item wasn't on "hold" any longer, now it was considered sold. Mind you, I could see the mattress sitting in a pile behind the cashier. Now she says the story is that it was sold and that it was never for sale. Why would you buy a $10 blow up mattress at a thrift store and not take it home with you? More lies. So riddle me this, why would you put an item up on a shelf for sale, and when it actually sails, take it off and insult your customer? I get the whole "employee first dibs" thing, but i had it in my hands, I walked up to pay for it, and you took it away from me and sent me on my way. I have been a long time customer for years. By far, St. Vincent's is the best thrift store in the Twin Cities. They have a kaleidoscope of items; clothing, housewares, furniture, décor, art, hardware, jewelry, children's items, books (well organized and comprehensive!), linens, seasonal, etc. The staff is incredibly helpful and nice; the prices are unmatched. And, each day some prices often are even lower due to the tag color. Free parking is adjacent to the store on their premises or directly in front on the street. I got my first bicycle at St Vincent De Paul almost twenty years ago. It was electric purple. More recently I've found some great vintage items (Columbia ski jacket for $9? 90s Ralph Lauren blazers? 80s silk bomber jackets for $6? North face fleece for $10? Doc Martens?? Grandpa sweaters!!!) It's hit or miss, obviously, because it's a thrift store. But I've hit so many home runs. I grew up around the corner, and I spent most of my teens and early twenties incredibly, devastatingly poor. If you feel like mocking the free bread and produce at St V's, or the $1 clothing rack, or the unfashionable but dirt cheap clothes, just remember: not everything is about you. Furniture selection is grand. There are some hidden treasures in the book corner. There's a small women's plus size section with some great finds, and always lots of kids shoes/clothes. They're always running a deal on clothes, and usually on dishes/furnishings too. One time they had an "all the clothes you can fit in a trash bag for $10" deal and I went absolutely feral. They run BOGO 50% off deals on winter coats fairly often too. I love St Vincent De Paul more than I love some of my own family members, and I dread the day we lose it to the rapid gentrification of South Minneapolis. read more

Got a wool mix sweater, a name brand base layer, t-shirt, button up shirt and paperback book for $12.50 including tax! They discount tags of certain colors which saved me some money. Only complaint is mens section being weak compared to women's but this seems to be the case at most thrift stores. Small store with a lot of stuff, will definitely be coming back. Oh, and they alphabetized the novels!!! read more

For the most part the St. Vincent De Paul thrift store doesn't have great stuff. The clothes look like what your unfashionable aunt threw out 20 years ago and besides that, they smell. The tchotchkes are beyond ridiculous. They have some shoes in the front counter under lock and key too but no one in their right mind would go through all that trouble to look at them--they are UG. So what makes St. Vincent's such an amazing thrift store that I keep going back to? One thing: FURNITURE. St. Vincents is your one-stop shopping spot for cheap, functional furniture. Bed frames, box springs, desks, tables, chairs, lamps, anything you are looking for you can find here for low low prices. I love the variety--a good selection of not only modern pieces but also vintage stuff. This is not your over-priced Savers shit that's all beat up and ghetto either. I bought a mint condition 1950s desk with gold accents for only $25 and a bedside lamp with a clean creme flower-print shade and a small table halfway up the stand for only $7. A friend of mine bought a small wooden computer desk for $10 and a bed frame and box spring set for $15. They even have entire matching bedroom sets for under $50. Wowzers! I cant believe all the great deals I see here so be sure and drop by next time you are looking for some chairs for that free table you found on craigslist or just for a nice accent piece for your living room. Thank heaven and all that is cheap and holy for St. Vincent's and their furnture warehouse. If it weren't for them I'd still be sleeping on an air mattress on the floor of my bedroom and my best piece of furniture would be the Love Sac I bought when I started college. Hallelujah. read more

I have this thing with chairs. I don't know why I love them but I do. I love old shabby chic chairs. I love new sleek modern chairs. I just love chairs in general and I buy more than I ever need (Its a filthy habit, buying a new chair and selling an old one online so I have space) So, as an expert chair buyer, I will let you in on my dirty little secret. The best place to buy chairs and shabby chic furniture in general is at a little hole in the wall thrift store on 12th and Lake. I love it. I love it so much that I am debating posting this review, should others decide they love chairs as well and then they buy all the good chairs and I am left with nothing but a broken heart and this review. I bought a chair for my new apartment yesterday. It is retro and soft pink and I love it. I love it so much I gave away my burnt orange chair so I could have room. The best part? 4.99! Hell yeah! 4.99! That is how much my chair cost. The prices for furniture at St Vincents are ridiculously cheap (like 5 - 30 bucks). You have to go often to get a good selection, but great finds will be had, especially if shabby chic is your thing. The rest of the store (clothes and shoes and such) is pretty meh, but the furniture room! Oh the glorious furniture room, is worth checking out. Bottom Line: Great place for shabby chic furniture. We needed a bookshelf. Nothing fancy, one of my roommates had shit out on her promise to provide one, and we were finally getting sick of these boxes of books, movies, and games sitting around in our boxes. The yelp gods directed me to this place. We figured it wasn't too far out of the way, and worth a shot...and worth driving on Lake St. (UGH!) They have a whole back room full of furniture. We spotted one of the few shelves in the place, and couldn't find a price tag. We wandered around to find an employee - he walked up, quoted me a price ($12!!!) and told the cashier so my (non-shitting out on bookcase providing) roommate could pay while he helped me carry the thing out to my car and shove into my 13 years young Ford Taurus, without my even asking. We were in and out and on our way with our bookcase in 10 minutes. A great experience. I wouldn't go for clothes...yikes. Some dishes and stuff that might be worth browsing through, but we had groceries in the car, so we had to get moving. Overall, I would definitely look here again if I need a piece of furniture. read more

Oh, the furniture. There's so much of it. I went in here earlier this week looking for a dresser. Didn't find a dresser that I liked, but I did find cane armchairs in good condition. For $10 each. I get a little embarrassed by my desires to dress up in womens clothing, but nobody here seems to mind. I get a lot of compliments and they even sometimes help me find what I am looking for. They have like a million vinyl records and if you have the time to spend all day looking through them you will find one Steve Reich album unopened and you will start clapping uncontrollably. I also found almost the entire Larry Wish cassette collection here and two Tender Meat tapes. I don't know who St. Vincent is, but I want to thank him for opening such a great store. read more

Love their books. Inexpensive, well organized and a great selection. Also great for housewares and craft supplies. If you are into found objects or up cycling for art, check them out. The best thing is how well sorted everything is. Goodwill stuff is just dumped in a pile. And because they sort so well, I make it a point to being things here when I am donating. My favorite is the ability to find old hand mixer beaters to rehab the ones at my local community Ed kitchen. Otherwise this stuff just goes into the dump. And for you "don't wear open toe shoes here" folks,if you are so prissy, stick to Marshall's. Welcome to how poor people actually have to shop. This is a true thrift store. I HATE thrift stores that sell things for just about how much they would cost new. They have a good selection at fair prices. Scored 2 tops, a baby bath tub, and a TON of other goodies for like $22. I'm from out of town and it was worth the stop. the Midtown Global Market is right next door. I was minding my own business and was about 2/3rds of the way through browsing the store and the lady at the register yelled at me that she wanted to go through my bag. I was surrounded by other customers and singled out for wearing a backpack (I was coming from class). Businesses that treat their customers like criminals get struck off my list. She was not entitled to check my bag and I was in no way acting suspicious (I had a basket with items I had intended to purchase). The store is well organized especially considering how busy they are and what a small space they are working with. I was pretty impressed overall by this little store, and my rating is bumped up a bit by their charitable mission which is very direct (community shoppers in need using vouchers in store). read more
