Left my hotel looking for a place with a good view of the river and old city. Like a magnet, I was pulled to Lindenhof. Lindenhof is a historic hill and public square in the heart of Zurich. It is known for its Roman origins, medieval significance, and panoramic views of the city. Lindenhof sits on a hill in Zurich's Old Town. People have lived here for thousands of years dating back to prehistoric communities during the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. Old tombstones found here have been traced back to Roman times. During the 9th century, a royal palace was built here. That site later served as a place to unify Swizerland under the Helvetic Constitution. I love how medieval history also documents how women dressed up as soldiers to defend the city. It was so nice to relax and enjoy the tranquil, tree-covered park. The panoramic views of the Limmat River, Lake Zurich, and Old Town were stunning. Listening to the church bells ring in unison was a bit magical. A beautiful park to visit on Switzerland National Day.

This hill is located in the the oldest part of Zurich (near Schipfe). It was once a Celtic…read moresettlement and then it became a Roman fort. The stone wall of the fort is what you see today. There's more history there that is still being uncovered. Some items found around the Lindenhof date back to the 1st century BC. Today, it's a large park with incredible views of Zurich and the Limmat River. We saw groups of people playing boules in the grassy area on a Sunday, as well as people playing chess. There's a fountain in the middle of the square that pays homage to Hedwig's women who wore battle gear to defend the city during the seige of Zurich in 1292. It's worth seeking out as it can be quite peaceful up there even though it's a tourist hot spot. The walk up the somewhat steep pathway and steps to get there from the city center is worth it. I've read that there is an elevator for those with mobility issues, but I didn't see one. There are benches as well as places to sit along the wall. It's shady and breezy up there. A great place to relax and enjoy the view.

There are a few rope saucer chair swings and hammocks along one edge of the perimeter and standard benches along another. Situated behind the rows of trees and shops stands a recycling plant, whose silhouette in the park skyline captures the city's environmental awareness.

I was in Zürich for a very short time. Had a 7 hour layover, so we decided to check out the city…read morecenter for a while. Mainly just walking around, exploring the side streets, grabbing a bite to eat. When we came across the Platzspitz Promenade, we decided to check it out for hell of it and it didn't seem so bad, considering there were some parts of the city that seemed a little sketchy. But it was during the month of May so everything was pretty lush and the weather was pretty decent for that time of year. It was mainly just something to check out while seeing what the city was about. When it came to potentially getting souvenirs though, a lot of the stores were expensive, so we opted out of that one.

I think this place used to be called needlepoint park because of all the junkies. But that time is…read morenow gone, and it's nice for a stroll by the river and museum. I like looking at ths swans swimming in the river. I came for a free jazz concert last weekend with some friends, and it attracted a small crowd of people hanging out on the grass in the dark. I'm not particularly fond of jazz, but it was still interesting to check out a live band.

At that time the Romans called Zurich "Turicum".It is also note worthy that Zurich was the primary center of the Protestant Reformation in Europe in 1519. The Old Town (Altstadt) reflects the Medieval and Renaissance period very well with housing style, contorted cobble stone streets, it's guilds and Rathaus (Town Hall). The three notable churches in Old Town are Grossmuster, a 12th century church and site of the Reformation in Switzerland, Fraumunster, a church originally built in 874 AD and today boasts stain glass windows by Giacometti and Marc Chagall, and finally Peterskirche which has the largest clockface in Europe. The Old Town has a walkway which takes you along the Limmat river, There are museums, public parks, restaurants and cafes, public markets and cruise offerings to Lake Zurich. The MFO Park in Oerlikon is truly a special place. The large steel structure, which is overgrown…read morewith climbing plants, creates its own atmosphere that changes with the seasons. It's not a typical park with wide lawns or playgrounds, but that's exactly what makes it so interesting. You can explore the different levels, walk on the stairs and balconies or simply enjoy the peace and quiet. The roof terrace is particularly beautiful - the view from up there is really impressive. There are also enough corners to retreat, read a book or simply unwind. The park has a modern, urban feel that fits well with the history of the neighborhood. It is a place that shows how old industrial sites can be transformed in creative ways. Anyone looking for something special and likes to discover unusual places will like the MFO Park. Not a classic, but definitely worth a visit!
