It's close location to Jahnplatz, Altstadt and the Strassenbahn's (streetcar's) Rathaus stop makes ALEX a great place to either start or end a night on the town in Bielefeld. Some of the music played sounds like a best of the 80s and 90s soft rock station, but that could be said of many German establishments I've enountered. The bathrooms are always pretty clean. The waitstaff and bartenders are helpful and friendly. They will also remember your usual order, if you become a regular customer. Brunch on the weekends is quite popular at the restaurant/cafe/bar. The food is great, especially the Italian Baguette. I recommend sharing the cheeseburger unless you have a big appetite. Drinks are very reasonably priced. Ice cream desserts are good too, and they can be ordered without the alcohol.

The waitress asked if I wanted mayonnaise which gave me the opportunity to decline and ask for ketchup. I'm not exactly sure which stout I got, but it was smooth. The food came out shortly and was a generous portion and they put the whole bottle of ketchup on the table for my fries! Crispy chicken wings were the whole wing like you'd get in fried chicken but simply fried (no breading, no sauce, no seasoning- crispy skin). Ribs were tender enough, crispy on the outside with some sauce squeezed ontop. The fries are thick cut and were the star of the dish. Overall there's nothing wrong with the food or service and it satisfies the craving for this type of food. But, it's no replacement for barbecue from the bayou in the US.
