I have visited many museums, but one dedicated to Egyptian artifacts is a rarity. Of which the museum has an extensive collection. Expect to spend 1-2 hours here. The museum itself is very clean, modern and spacious. While I did not know much about the subject matter beforehand, it was nice to learn a little more about then I previously knew. It didn't make me want to visit Egypt, but I appreciated the history of the artifacts that I viewed.

"What is an Egyptian museum doing in Munich," I thought, but more specifically, what is Germany doing with this many Egyptian relics? Why is this collection large enough to be housed in a museum here? Well I'm sure some of you could enlighten me with the history, and probably several of you are rolling your eyes at my ignorance of some ruler and how important the Egyptian culture was to him, specifically, but no matter. I enjoyed this museum as much, if not more, than I've enjoyed most museums I've visited in my adult life, and that was due in part to the museum building itself--the architecture and the overall design is spectacular. The brutalist structures both highlighted the museum pieces and could stand alone as art by themselves. Beyond that, the employees were friendly, despite the hanging feeling that Americans-who-only-speak-English are not welcome everywhere we went, and the collection is seriously impressive. Tons and tons of stuff to look at, and all very well preserved. We spent a decent amount of time walking through here, about 3-4 hours. We took advantage of the free, self-guided, recorded English tour, but also stopped to appreciate most of the items that weren't mentioned, as well. Didn't have much time to peruse the store or enjoy the cafe, but that's fine. I will say that the foods at American museum cafes are much better than what I've seen outside of the US. Definitely make a stop here but eat elsewhere.

I love sculptures and they have done a great job of putting things together really well. If you are an artist or photographer this is one place you have to visit in Munich. I could go back here again and again and admire all the sculptures and in particular, spend hours in the hall of faces as I call it. See my photos to get an idea about what type of exhibits are here. The Marstallmuseum is a carriage museum located in the Nymphenburg Palace. The museum is housed in…read morewhat was previously the royal stables and covers about 300 years of history. There are beautiful displays of sleighs , coaches and personal items of the Wittelsbach's. King Ludwig II's coronation and state coach is a real show piece. It's extravagant on every level. Since King Ludwig ll built 3 beautiful castles with one being the famous Neuschwanstein Castle. (Walt Disney's inspiration for Cinderella's Castle) I was not surprised by his choice of carriages. The Hercules Sleigh of Max Emanuel is the oldest on display. It was restored in 2012 and has a carving of Hercules on it. Maximilian Emanuel was a Wittelsbach ruler of Bavaria and a Prince-elector of the Holy Roman Empire.

This review pains me. Lenbachhaus used to be my absolute favorite museum. When I studied in Munich…read morein 92-93 (yes, many years ago) I would spend hours hanging out in this museum. It was cozy and inviting and had the fabulous works of Marc, Kandinsky, and others in the Blaue Reiter group. It was a bit of a personal oasis. Fast forward to December 2015, my first opportunity to visit since their major remodel. It now feels like a museum instead of like you're visiting someone's house who happens to have an awesome art collection. Paintings are spaced far apart on white walls. It feels like they have fewer Marc paintings on display (though my memory could be faulty). Many of the Kandinsky paintings are now no longer in the proper museum - they're in the auxiliary gallery in the U-bahn station. While it's still some of my favorite art, the overall atmosphere and experience is not what it once was.

There's a *humongous* amount of reading involved (on huge panels and on multiple floors), with lots of photos accompanying the information. Also, everything is translated into English. If you want to read everything (which we did) and really absorb it, you'll need several hours. It's not a museum for the casual visitor. Admission is currently free, and there's a good (somewhat small) bookstore.
