The Stand is a great place. The prices for the same show go up throughout the week so if you can manage a Thursday, do. It's a small, cosy place and the food reminds me of school dinners (although they don't make you line up to get it any more!), it tastes good but it's more that friendly childlike atmosphere the makes me think that. I went to the Stand with a couple of the girls from college on a Thursday evening it was 2-4-1 on tickets and even they were only £4 on this occasion-bargain! I didn't have anything to eat but I had a look around at those who were having food and it looked like decent portions for the price paid. I liked the decor inside, although I think it is one of those 'I am trying too look like I haven't tried at all' places. The toilets however are horrid, damp, smelly and unclean. The cubicle door didn't lock so my friend had to hold onto it for me and like-wise I for her. Once you have had a few drinks, the chances of you falling down the stairs to the toilets increase as they are very steep and if my memory serves me well made of steel-bad times! I would recommend getting there early to get a seat however as they are limited, and also don't sit too close to the front or you will be subject to harrasment by the comedians, its all a bit of fun right, tell that to the guy who got dragged up on stage on my visit! Like me and my friends you might get lucky and get really good comedians but I think it might be a hit or miss. Yes top comedians have showcased here but they rarely come back after they have made it mainstream so be prepared to have some guy who likes to crack the odd joke at the pub with his mates trying to be the next Frankie Boyle. Overall I had a good night with plenty of laughs and my friend did win the prize draw :) read more

The Stand Comedy club is a small comedy club situated in York Place, It's normally very busy so best to book your tickets in advance. the prices for tickets, drink and food is very reasonable and I can highly recommend the nacho's. Recommend Monday nights here for Red Raw, which is a mix of acts, many of them on their first few tries at standup. Always a few gems and the crowd is quite forgiving. Really suits the haphazard layout inside. Two thumbs up. read more

If you enjoy stand up comedy, including seeing up and coming talent, as well as good pub grub food and an intimate atmosphere then the Stand is an excellent option for a night out! I've been a few times and have not been disappointed yet! Shows usually start at 9pm with doors opening at 7pm. It is a small club and tables/seating are limited so if you are like me and enjoy having a seat, it's best to get there at 7pm as it will be packed, especially on a weekend! There is a decent selection of drinks and they are reasonably priced so everyone should be able to find something they like! While I've only had the nachos from their food selection, they were amazing! If you get the chilli nachos you get a generous portion that you most likely will want to share with someone else! The shows themselves feature a compare and usually 4-5 comedians with a main headline act. Sometimes one or two of the acts will be a dud but that's to be expected! The times I've been 90% of the acts have been quite entertaining. There are usually at least two intermissions for a toilet break and a refill or two. The staff are quite efficient and the atmosphere can't be beat for an intimate comedy experience. Far better than Highlights if you are looking for a good comedy night out and are not on a stag or hen do! read more

Love this place. For those who haven't been if you want a seat get here a good 10-15 mins before doors open or a bit sharper if it's a comedy legend as it's first come - there's no reserving tables. Also phone/book online to guarantee entry as it sells out most weekends. And even if you have pre-booked your ticket it's still the same queue for everyone - no priority lane. If this sounds like a pain in the bahookie well that's just how they roll, they've been doing it this way for years so go with it and you'll have a great night, otherwise this ain't the place for you. Nights are always varied, staff are excellent, food is hearty and there are plenty of bar breaks. Hecklers be warned, this ain't no Jongleurs. Audience banter is permitted, but you go too far, too loud, too crazy you will be shutdown. This is the team behind The Stand events/venues during the Fringe so they know how to run their place and the calibre is always high. Not all the acts are gonna float your boat, but that's comedy. Compères have differing styles, so if in doubt (or you're just a big feartie) stay away from the front row. read more

I've never eaten here, but the comedy is usually of a fairly high standard.

Me and my girlfriend went to one of the Friday night shows when were in Edinburgh last week and had a really good laugh here. The venue is small and not the smartest place you will ever go but it has character, feels like a proper comedy club and I thought the paintings on the walls were a really good touch. We got there about an hour before the show but all the seats had been taken, we weren't expecting it to be so busy so early (and my girlfriend foolishly wore high heels) but this didn't spoil the fun. There were four comedians performing when we went and all were funny especially the headline act who I was very impressed with. The stand seems to get a little forgotten about during the fringe due to all the other pop-up activities all over the city, but this place really comes into its own the other 11 months of the year. The £2 red raw mondays are fab & usually packed. Love seeing all the new ones try out & everyone gets about 5-10mins, so even if some arnt good you still come away having had a good night. The crowd is usually excellent & respectful, they don't allow hen/stag dos which is BRILLIANT!!!! also if there is a large annoying drunk group they ask them to be quieter,... nothing worse than when you are trying to enjoy comedy with few friend/boyfriend are some rowdy drunk people think its their turn to be the comedian. Drinks are a little pricey but that's how they make their money I suppose so fair enough. The whole place has a cosy underground feel & candlelight. The only issues I would say are the "NO PHONES, BE QUIET" signs that are everywhere, I find it a little bit too much. Also never move any furniture as they go absolutely mental if you do. we arrived "early" only 20 mins after opening and there were no seats, shocking, there must only be 30-40 seats in total, wouldnt call it a "club" more a comedy "room", we got refund and went as we refused to stand @ the stand and eat our meal off a tray?? they should allow you to book seats when booking tickets as it ruined our night - very disappointed Visited February 2013 read more

it may be small but its perfectly formed! pay your way in, buy a surprisingly decent glass of wine and take your seat. whether or not you actually find the material amusing or not is gong to come down to personal taste, but sooner or later you'll find something to laugh at...hopefully! read more
