Stanley's provides a much-needed addition to the cafe scene in the 'burbs of the North Shore. We ventured in for the first time today (Sunday) and at 1pm the scene was lively and bustling. They have counter food plus a decent a la carte menu, and you order at the till. My first coffee was a little burnt and I sent it back but the staff were very apologetic and I received a fresh coffee within minutes. The open sandwiches are reasonably priced and just the right amount for a light, weekend lunch (leaving just enough room for that sweet treat afterwards). I can't help but think they've copied some of the area's more established cafes in terms of their styling and decor but hey, it works.

A surprising delight tucked up the hill and away from the main crowd of Milford cafes. Good coffee, a full menu and a cabinet bursting with tempting options to satisfy all tastes. I had pie-jar mince with cheese and potatoes, because it was a rainy day and it was exactly what I felt like before having to spend the arvo outside working, yum! It is not a pie, as I embarassingly first thought, rather the mince is served in a pie-jar. The place was full in no time and the atmosphere was relaxed, local and upbeat. Stanley's is the kitchen of 3 ladies who love great food we were told by one of my favorite cafe people who I'd lost after the last place she worked closed down. Another bonus was finding her. I'll definitely go back!

Reminds me of Melbourne. Beautiful venue, atmosphere, food, cakes, everything. No table service though - need to order at counter which I always find strange at such nice cafés. Definitely highly recommend and will go back as soon as I can to try more of their delish menu.

Anyway, this week I set out to rectify my ignorance by visiting twice, first with my Yelp amigo, Kathy L and then again the following day. The café is in a pretty unexpected place, right next to the North Shore Events Centre. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the smell of freshly roasted beans. I've said it once and I'll say it again - cafés that roast their own beans make consistently good coffee. I mean, that's just my experience but I reckon 99% of the time it holds true. The Coffee Lab is no exception. Here you get to choose your own beans from their three grinders. We took the advice of the barista and went Sumatran, who told us "it had a hint of vanilla and is good served black." Perfect. Could my unrefined coffee palate taste the hint of vanilla, no, but was the coffee strong and silky smooth - yes. In fact, it was so delicious that I ordered the same thing the next day. I am yet to try their food but the slices look off the chain - just like nana used to make them! No doubt, I'll be back soon.

I've only stopped in for coffee so far, but I've got to say it was the best coffee I've had in a long time - velvety smooth milk poured over perfectly extracted allpress espresso. Bliss. The barista clearly knows whatsup. The décor in here is also right up my alley - clean, white and modern with freshly cut flowers. It's pretty cosy inside but there's a coupley tables and chairs out the front as well. Definitely a spot for smaller catchups - 2,3 or maaaaybe 4 people max. The menu looks extensive - breakfast, brunch and lunch - and there's plenty of delectable looking sweet treats available on the counter. If you need any convincing, scroll through their FB pics - food porn at it's best (yesterday's was freshly pulled pork and a big bowl of coleslaw). This is also the North Shore pick-up point for Jess' Underground Kitchen, which is definitely worth checking out if you haven't already! She makes fresh, flavoursome take-home meals which you can pick up Mon, Tues and Wed. Head to her website for more details.

Inside the fit out is youthful and fun, exactly what you would expect from a café named 'Little King.' There is a huge wooden communal adorned with freshly cut flowers and mismatched tables and chairs reminiscent of your local primary - circa 1990. A playful mural spans an entire wall and exposed light fixtures dangle from the ceiling. Supreme is the coffee of choice and but if caffeine ain't your thing they also have a wide range of herbal teas. As for the menu, it has all the typical brunch fare plus a few extras including about FIVE, yes I said FIVE, different waffle dishes. However, when I went I couldn't get past all the good-looking cabinet food and being a sucker for baked goods of the savory variety I opted for the spinach and cream cheese muffin. It was served hot out of the tray and was moist, fluffy and god damn delicious. What else is pretty choice is that from 7am - 1030am on Weekdays they offer early bird specials. This includes deals such as eggs how you like them AND a reg coffee for only $9.90....genius! I guess the early bird really does catch the worm.

A bit industrial, retro and we say mix matching decor. Greenery brings out the white painting brick wall. Something catching your vision. Substantial cabinet selection, as I have chose the spinach feta cheese scone and the almond croissant with Latte. Scone came unheated, dry Inside, so the pairing butter was pale. The same situation came to the croissant-perhaps it has been left in the cabinet for too long, the pastry was actually hard to cut and inside was not moist enough to stand out the croissant flavour. Latte was in the right temperature however milk forth didn't stand firmly. This was definitely out of my expectations for a proper Cafe??! Then the soft shell crab burger, sort of, saved some credit. Nicely cooked crab with crispy texture matching the sunny egg and burger bread. Cute portion displayed in a typical Japan-inspired rustic plate. Well presented. Reading the menu, you could feel it offers mostly Korean&Japan fusion dishes. Ramen, Bento, dumpling soup, sushi etc. Smart for this mixed culture area, so feel daring to try these rather than the average cabinet ones. Good luck for the Asian flavour in a western Cafe, which is, most fascinating in many Cafes&restaurants in New Zealand.
