This store is off-putting and misrepresents itself. The door states that it sells a few types of items, including antiques. There were not really any true antiques in the store except for a few old porcelain vases (that also could easily have been repros). I felt like that was a misrepresentation for sure. That aside, the store carries some good/ok products - mostly baby toys such as Mon Ami stuffies, which I have now seen in a few places. Some of the art was antique-ish, antique, or at least decent, but didn't always have obvious labels or ages (and was clearly a mix). The staff weren't particularly friendly, but there was some signage which put me off. Upon entering the store, there is a no food or drink sign (normal), but also a sign that you must hold your child's hand if under like 11 years old, which rubbed me wrong. Especially given much of the content of the store. "You break it you buy it" would be more fitting. Additionally, there were no photo or videos signs in the store. I live in this area part of the year and often have house guests who enjoy visiting and shopping in Camden. We will occasionally stop by Starbird. The two proprietors of this store are so rude that it's laughable. Truly SNL caricatures of the ultimate snobs. I can't imagine ever buying a thing from them. I cannot agree more with the horrible reviews. Our daughter-in-law opened a lovely shop close by, so we ventured in to see if we could further support other local businesses. Owners are rude, they ignore you if they can, and the merchandise is unique (you could get it anywhere else and on-line cheaper). My wife and I have our favorite stores in Camden to shop at. Starbird is one of the best. Having read the reviews posted on this site, these commenters must have gone to another Starbird store. The gentleman owner is the nicest, kindest man. His wife is also incredibly kind, and she also makes some of the items they sell. I can only assume the negative commenters are local competition that are simply trying to steal business away from Starbird. The quality of their products is top shelf. Everything is so unique. And, he always adds a little story to go along with the items we are looking at to buy. We will always shop at Starbird. We recently sold our home in MA and bought a home in Rockland. Part of the reason for the move are the cute shops in Camden. Starbird being one of those. I guess, to those negative commenters, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. If I could leave zero stars I would. Completely unwelcoming, rude, and arrogant. I have money to spend, but wouldn't wish to support this business by any means. I debated reviewing this business thinking that perhaps the frigid reception of the owners/shopkeepers was just a one time thing. Imagine my disappointment (and validation) to learn others had the same experience. As others have noted, the owners (or maybe just one was the owner when we visited, there were two; a man and a woman) were incredibly unfriendly, only decided to speak to us once their other two customers who appeared to know them had left the store. Both my partner and I were in shorts and sneakers but we were looking seriously at two pricey items to help furnish our new home. Perhaps we didn't have the look these two prefer for their clientele. Or perhaps they're simply as cold and unfriendly to all their potential customers. On asking a couple of questions regarding some of the art work, the answers came back labored with near eye-rolling exhaustion on their part. When we asked about one particular piece, framed but from a well known folk artist from Massachusetts, neither could/would tell us what type of canvas or paper it was printed on or whether it was acid-free, etc. The woman dismissed us by saying "They're all good quality. Very high quality...". If we're considering spending $600 for a print in a frame, we'd like to at least know what it's printed on and if it's originally signed. Sheesh! The gentleman was just as unfriendly when we asked him about the artist and whether he had any giclée prints by the same artist. Just cold, unfriendly, unwelcoming folks. I'm not sure how they're in business, if they've been in business for any length of time at all. But if they continue to do so, it will be without our support. read more

I was surprised to see all the negative reviews for this lovely store. On a recent vacation, my teenage son and I made a quick stop at the store to browse for a couple of gifts. I found that the proprietors were friendly, gracious and helpful. I purchased several items which they shipped, at a reasonable price, to my office in California. In fact my purchases were already waiting for me when I got home a week later. Starbird has a excellent selection of tasteful housewares and I look forward to shopping there again on my next visit to Camden. read more

My wife and I own an inn in the lakes region about an hour from Camden. We love visiting Camden to purchase decor from local shops. We entered Star bird and was interested in purchasing a beautiful hand painted tissue box ($68), two blankets ($115/each), and (2) pillows ($98/each). We were delighted to find one of a kind items to add to our collection at our Inn. Things turned sour when I took a picture of one of the pillows we wanted to purchase to send to our manager to check if it would match in one of our rooms. The owner was incredibly rude and said no photos allowed. I did not see any signs posted and apologized. When I thought that was the end of the conversation he began to berate us and accuse us of wanting to find the item on the internet. We as business owners take pride in supporting local shops to create a special and unique ambiance for our guests. He continued to accuse us and i told him that he just lost customers and that we found him to be very rude. He continued to accuse us (and laughing) as we walked out of the store. This type of behavior was astonishing especially during these very difficult times we are living in. Small businesses should support eachother. Sadly, we have crossed Star bird off of our list. There are so many other wonderful shops in Camden to support. I would highly recommend shopping elsewhere. read more

Went into many shops in Camden today and enjoyed them all until I walked into this place. The owner behind the counter is rude and very strange. I was going to buy an overpriced pillow until I asked him where it was made and he became very rude. For this reason I put the pillow down and walked out. Nothing worse than giving business to a grouch who doesn't appreciate your business. read more

This is a fabulous store. I was visiting from Texas, and had been in many stores across the state. This was definitely one of my favorite ones. They have beautiful rugs, linens, throw pillows, dishes,and much more. The people working were helpful, informative and very nice. I would highly recommend this store to my friend visiting the area. read more

Just thought I would add a review. I wouldn't have placed a comment normally because I always have had great service at Starbird but when I noticed the rediculous comments others left, I felt you needed to hear someone elses experience. The people that run the store have been nothing but professional. They are not intrusive. Let's face it sometimes you just want to look around. They are also helpful when you are looking for that special something that looks like they might be able to get. I have purchased many things from the shop over the last 8 years, all of which is of great quality. I go there often and plan to continue. I would encourage you to go there! read more

I visited Camden in 2007 and thought it was a great place and I hope to go back sometime. I had gone into this shop which has many nice things and saw a lamp I liked. I was not sure if would fit the space I had in mind for it. When I got home I decided I wanted it and called and they did send me the lamp. No problem. I liked it so much that I called back to inquire about other similar pieces that I recalled being in the store. I spoke to a woman. She was not helpful. I told her that I had recently purchased the lamp and it didn't seem to matter. She didn't want to be bothered. The best part was that when we were both hanging up I heard say to someone...'Well that was a strange call." Absolutely the worst attitude. The Man behind the counter is one of the most Disrespectful, Rude, Obnoxious and Mean Salesperson I've ever had the displeasure of meeting. He obviously cares nothing about his customers. My family and I were visiting on vacation when we came across... what we thought would be a great store to get a few gifts. Little did we know that we would be Yelled at, Talked About and Embarrassed by this Man. I took a photo of a purse to send to a friend who was interested, in fact , I was prepared to purchase several purses and wedding gifts totaling over $700. The Man behind the counter began yelling at me, calling me an idiot for taking a picture, along with other choice names. I walked out of the store with my daughters and 5 other strangers in the store, who stopped me outside to say that they'd never shop there again, that he was so rude to me and others in the store! I almost have to laugh at these reviews, because I have gone to this store on and off since they opened. The owners are incredibly rude, and I always debate with myself whether to go in and actually support people who are so terrible. I have bought a few things, all of which were very nice (but overpriced), but I have equally often listened to them, and put back things I was going to buy and left, simply because I could not stomach doing business with people so rude. This is BY FAR THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED!! My family and I were deeply offended by the man and woman (owners?) working in the store. Make sure not to touch anything in the store because they will follow you around and threw a fit when we unrolled a 20" x 30" rug to see the full pattern on it. After rolling the rug back up and tying their linen bows around it, we heard them talking about us behind our backs saying that we had ransacked the store. Everything that we touched was left in immaculate shape and exact same location. We were so put off but continued to walk around the store and just shook it off. We actually ended up purchasing the rug and another blanket, spending nearly $200. When we left the store we heard the man yelling that we were so ridiculous and we found it difficult not to let him know that we had heard them talking about us the entire time. The man and woman then began throwing their hands up in the air screaming at the top of their lungs at us about how disrespectful we were to their store and they should'nt have to clean up in their own store. THEY WORK IN A RETAIL STORE, that's the beauty of their job, you have to tidy up a little if you want the store to look nice. We apologized for whatever they thought we did, which was nothing. The man then decided to yell "yeah well you probably voted for Obama too and everything is just great, huh?" He obviously has an anger management problem because I am not sure what this had to do with anything. They told us that "their customers" would never unravel a tiny bath rug in the store. This was by far the most insulting, they were saying that we were not good enough to be customers at their store. Which is completely insane because we not only bought something from the store but we didn't even think the store was that special. My mother went back into the store for a refund and they woman shouted that she would be more than happy to take back the sale and threw the receipt at her on our way out, screaming at us to leave. I visited Camden, ME with my family Memorial Day weekend. We had a wonderful time visiting the many beautiful gift shops in Camden... until we walked into Starbird. My 13 year old nephew wanted to buy a compass he saw the day before. When we walked in, the owner was staring us down with unwelcoming crossed arms the whole time. So to alleviate the "crowd" appearance, I meander to another section of the store and decided to preview some pictures on my camera taking earlier outside at the gorgeous waterfall behind the storefronts. Then suddenly I heard the owner rudely yell from the across the store, in front of all the customers, "hey... no picture taking in here!!" I told him that I wasn't taking pictures and that I was simply previewing pictures taken outside before we came in the store. Instead of apologizing, the owner said "I didn't know what you were doing! You don't have to be so paranoid!" So I repeated I was only previewing old pictures and if he wanted me to leave I would. As I walked out of the store (leaving the rest of family behind), he rudely repeated "just go ahead and get out of here". Writing "reviews" is not my normal thing. There are so many wonderful, quaint and friendly shops in Camden where we met great people and bought beautiful gifts. I just wanted people to know how rude and unprofessional this establishment was to prevent others from having a wonderful Spring afternoon ruined by a similar rude experience. read more

First off, I would love to have the option of giving this establishment negative stars. My family and I are vacationing with my sister on the island of Islesboro. We thought it would be a fun day trip with our mom and my two daughters to visit the town of Camden for lunch and shopping. After a delightful and delicious lunch at the Waterfront, my sister suggested we visit the Starbird shop. We entered and looked around; my mom was considering purchasing several different items. As she was perusing the store my very respectful 7 year old asked me about a table of compasses. As I was getting ready to explain what they were, the owner stated in a very rude and dismissive way that they are "breakable and 3 have already been broken today and I don't want the 4th broken..." when we stated we would be leaving the shop due to his rudeness, he yelled that we were the "worst group of the day". He then proceeded to knock over his own compass display as he was pointing out how disrespectful we were. If this were the only place open in a torrential rain storm, I would NEVER, NEVER step foot in this store. The two owners (man and woman) are the rudest and most surely people I have have ever come across. Do Not Ruin a delightful day in Camden with a trip to this store!!! read more
