Everything from the latest high school football scores to fun events for the kids and the hottest deals around town. I first became of fan of Eastlake Times on Facebook after a friend recommended it to me. After looking at the site, I wish I had known about it sooner. This is a great resource especially to new residents. Like many military families, we have had our share of moves. We moved three times in six years. If there were a site like this for every community in which we needed to relocate, it would make the transition much easier. About a month ago, I put in a request to have Eastlake Times promote a fund raising event for a local elementary school. Mark was incredibly helpful and posted the event not only on the Times, but also the Facebook page. This was much appreciated. When I was growing up, I knew all my neighbors. There was a sense of community. Now it seems that more people are 'too busy' and are loosing touch with the area in which they live. Eastlake Times keeps you in touch and informs you of all the things that make Eastlake a wonderful community to live. Highly recommended! Great job Eastlake Times!

I have wanted to do a name change (I was named after a big jerk) for many years. I was required to post a notice in a local paper. Other papers were slow to respond to my requests and questions and outright snotty (How do they stay in business?). But this paper, "The East County Californian," was just outstanding. Answered my questions immediately and walked me through the legal notice process. Very reasonable priced. I even went to their new 1630 Pioneer Way address to pay and post and they are a great little family business. Go with them. You will be as happy as I am!!!!!

My father, Thomas Shess, started this little newspaper out of our home on 28th St. He wanted to give a unifying voice for the people of North Park and their homes to set forth positive change within the neighborhood. At the time (1993), many of the historic homes that give NP such character were in disarray. In even worse shape was "Downtown" North Park, with the blighted North Park Theater, and seedy 30th and University bus transfer area. Look how far we've come. In a time when this community was considered nothing but ghetto, a handful of residents maintained and improved their North Park homes. My dad put together the first issue of North Park News with the proposed plan of the North Park Sign on the front page below the green masthead, and he ran the paper out of our house on 28th Street until early 2000. This paper was a total family operation, and I can still see and smell the print that wiped off on my hands from stuffing fliers into issues or from dropping them on peoples lawn. I hated it at the time, but now I can't help but laugh when I remember picking up the 2000 or so copies of the paper from the printer. I remember our first color issue, and I remember when I was a staff photographer for a few years shooting Paesano's Customer of the Month. Me being a cute kid and family, my dad always used pictures of my friends and I as models for the front page. We always had a seat of honor during the Toyland Parade, and one year I remember we were loaned a H1 hummer to wave from. It was awesome. My dad sold the paper around 2002 I believe, and I'm happy with how it is today - the buyers are doing a good job. This paper was a part of my life, and now it's a part of the community. Take pride in your neighborhood North Park because people fought to revitalize it. What we see today is a result of the effort of a great number of great people coordinating and working together. To name a few : Senator Christine Kehoe, Councilmember Tony Atkins, Tom & Phyllis Shess, Don Convington, Jay Turner, and anyone who took or takes pride in what is the truly the best and finest neighborhood of San Diego.

The unfortunate reality of the "new age" genre is that those categories in and of themselves don't have enough to sell. Which means there aren't enough advertisers to support it. Which in turn means the floodgates for drips of all varieties have to be opened. Vibrational healing, crystal magic, decorative divination doodads, multiple doses of severe anal powerwashing, godesses, bigfoots, ufos, and a host of Atlantean reincarnates. That'll keep the lights on. Caveat emptor up the wazoo. I hold no fault to the people publishing and involved with Vision. I do still think it's great and provides much to enjoy. I just get a little sad for the desperate and/or mentally ill, scrambling for a solution that end up in the clutches of the equally desperate and/or mentaly ill that are lurking about with a tripped out solution to sell. (whew) Be smart about what you buy into people. Not everything can be "the truth". The truth is just a spice peppered into the baloney.

You're sitting around getting your oil changed and the only thing on TV is CSPAN and then POW - kicked in the face with Vision. Vision not only jumps out at you at the most random locations, but features some of the best articles and advertisements ever, like ancient healing massages for dogs followed by dog bone aromatherapy treatments and How My Sea Monkeys Taught Me To Enjoy the Simple Life. That's not to say that this magazine is poorly written or non-amusing. Quite the opposite. One of the best time killers ever and a reminder that anything strange you've ever imagined about the world or yourself someone else has already come up with and is trying to sell you.

Perhaps even a list will be birthed from this concept, it will be a short yet bold and mighty list of job getting idea's. So just like in dating, people say you shouldn't find a job on the internet, like they say you shouldn't find a partner in a bar. But I've found all mine the way I guess I was told not to. My very first job in San Diego was for a teeny tiny company just off Ruffin Road with a fun group of developers. We developed and released crime reporting software. That position was discovered on the little old Classified section of SignOn and the rest is history. I highly recommend the classifieds section in the UT/Signon website, they work.
