Orange, CT - aww, I'm sorry to see Star of India has closed, as we were there only a couple of weeks ago! I'll leave this review anyway in case they reopen. This was a wonderful find, which I came across on Yelp while looking for a late lunch spot in/near New Haven - specifically Indian as that's what our relatives visiting from Europe requested - and many of the restaurants were closed between 3-5pm. The menu has a bit of everything: classic northern dishes, Indo-Chinese, even Nepalese (the owners are from Nepal). We missed the weekend buffet so ordered a la carte and everything was delicious: the chicken biryani was flavorful, the garlic naan is amazing and very garlicky, the chicken tikka masala had clean solid (non-fatty/gristly) white meat chicken chunks in a yummy gravy, and although the lamb could be more tender, the sauce is wonderful. The veggie momos came with a properly & awesomely spicy dipping sauce. I managed to snatch a couple of masala fries from the kids who devoured them all. We even received a buttery & tasty daal on the house. The couple who owns the restaurant is lovely, and even helped mediate our sharing-averse children (well mostly mine), halving the sweet lassi for them each, bringing them individual ketchups for the masala fries, etc. I'd gladly patronize any new establishment they open and wish them luck in their future endeavors! read more

Amazing family who strives to bring the best of the best to their customers. Food is always fresh, wonderfully seasoned and presented exquisitely! You have the option to dine in or take out, personally I prefer to dine in. It is a quaint little dining room that is super relaxing and peaceful- great for date night with your other half! Everything I have tried is absolutely delicious! Went here Sunday evening. Very nice atmosphere, looks like a nice place and clean. I had the chicken tikka masala and I have to say it was very good. The portion was also pretty generous. The service was very good and helpful in figuring out the menu. Prices are not bad, ample parking. Worth checking out if you like Indian food. read more

Went here on a recommendation from a vegan and perhaps we should have been wary about the meat dishes. It's a little place that doesn't get much dine-in action but we were seated right away and I think by the owner was very attentive. Let me just get right to the chase. I had the lamb with channa (chickpeas). It was out of this world. Absolutely amazing. My husband had butter chicken which was horrendous. The sauce was wonderful and luxurious but the chicken breast was obviously pre-cooked/poached and reheated in the sauce. I'm very sensitive to the stale taste and smell of reheated chicken and I knew right off that was the case. The chicken itself was sliced in like 1" slices so it was obvious it wasn't simmered in the sauce. It was really disappointing because the sauce was so delicious. If you're a vegetarian, then this is for you. Or order the lamb. But stay away from that chicken! read more

This is my favorite restaurant. I love their flavors! The best Chana masala I've ever eaten! I cannot get enough of their samosas. One of my more preferred Indian buffets in the area, with individual baskets of fresh naan brought to your table and a thorough spread with lamb, fritters/ samosa, soup, and dessert! I have to say my highlight was the surprising heated container of Masala Chai at the edge of the buffet! It made my experience! Service is wonderful. My only negative is that this weekend I had such stomach pains after eating here, as well as my friend whom I got take-out for. The other family member I ate with was fine, and it seems the only difference is that I and my friend partook in the sauces/ pickles and my family member did not. I believe there must have been something off, mostly likely amongst the sauces/ pickles. Unfortunately this gave me a bad experience the rest of the day despite how I otherwise enjoyed the buffet. We've been searching for a very good Indian Restaurant for some time since moving from New York. Star of India Restaurant did not disappoint. We happened to stop by on Saturday for their Weekend Buffet. Their buffet is a little different from most Indian Restaurant. Such as their rice biryani (spicy) and salad dishes. And the flavor of their dishes were deliciously seasoned and their cooked chicken dishes were fresh and tender. Service was wonderful and they were out to please. Their naan bread which came with the lunch buffet was buttery and nicely chewy. The restaurant setting is simple and they played calming nature music in the background. I can't rate the food but I can rate my experience with the website ... which is not good. there is a website, www.starofindiact.com that has the business' proper address/menu/phone number/etc. ... from which I ordered., When I arrived to pick up the order, I was told there was no record of my online order (even though my credit card had been charged). In conducting a second online search, I see there also is a website listed as starofindiaorange.com ... which may be the better online option. All I know is that I now have to contact MasterCard about getting a charge removed for a meal that I ordered and paid for but was never served. read more

My son and I had such a nice dinner here tonight. I haven't been for dine-in since before covid. I was most of all so impressed by the staff who were all so friendly and made us feel welcome. I am not a connoisseur of Indian food, but It was a different menu since last time we were there, and they agreed to make my son a shrimp dish off-menu that he really loved last time he was there. What I noticed was the inside felt cleaner with fresh paint and the portions seemed larger than I recall. Looks like they have their brunch and lunch buffets available again but not when we were there on a Saturday night. My son's prawns were huge, and he enjoyed his dish. My chicken was flavorful and tender. Manager asked us about spice level. Love the complimentary lentil crackers and tamarind dip (plus green dip). Garlic naan was super flaky with a tasty char. And paratha was delicious too. Water was fresh. Manager even comped us a small honey soaked dessert since we hadn't been there in awhile. So nice and thoughtful. Four of us enjoyed a fine late lunch today. The meal was excellent with a good choice of area cuisines. I had the Chicken Vindaloo which was dialed back slightly on heat. The appetizers were shared among four of us. The four entrees were more than enough with food to take home. The service was attentive, but not overly so. This is my favorite local Indian restaurant near Woodbridge. They have a killer goat curry and they spice their food nicely and will actually make your food spicy without just upping the pepper. Extremely nice waitstaff. They have a good lunch buffet, which is a good value. I saw they were on the market, but they were still open in December, 2021. After 6 hours of Business meeting, we were starved and hunting restaurant around us. First, we were not sure that place was good because our eyes went in yelp review. We were so glad we picked this place for our dinner. Food was great. We taste almost everything. My pick was chicken tikka masala, rice, raita, and carrot pudding (Gajjar Halawa). We wanted to taste max dishes; we ordered varieties so we could share. We were mixed colored and society people. All our Chinese, African, Jamaican, Indian and Nepalese friends were so happy with their friendly service, clean, well-lighted dining and bright walls. Wish I could give 6 stars. My kids love this place. The aloo Gobi is not spicy. The palak paneer is. We love all the dishes! So flavorful, and they have spicy lime pickle. The mulligatawny soup isn't spicy. The portions are large and the breads are lovely with different textures. This is the place that gives me nyc Indian vibes. Our go to place on a friday night after a tiring week in the university! By far the best Indian restaurant in the vicinity of UNH. Very friendly and accommodating staff, who even let us bring in a cake to celebrate our friend's birthday! That's not just it, they even gave us takeaway boxes for the cake we brought in! An A+ for their friendliness and service. The food is amazing too! You don't get the dum biryani, but the biryani here is kinda gravy and rice like. I went here for lunch with my sister. We ended up doing the buffet and it was fantastic. I'm not usually a fan of buffets, but they had a great selection of kebab, chana masala, naan, rice, and vegetables. I also had a mango lassi which was one of the best I've ever had.
