Knox has a wonderful campus, full of…read morehistoric buildings that have clearly been maintained properly, and the newest buildings blend in well despite their architectural and technological differences. I was similarly impressed with the student-ambassadors and professors who made themselves available, and my very-discerning son came away impressed at the caliber of students and professors alike. He aspires to be a history professor and already knows much, much more than I do (I've been a high school teacher for 20 years). For him to come away with compliments speaks volumes about what he experienced. For context, here's his explanation of the conflict as Russia invaded Ukraine: "The Slavic people's (Poles, Russians, Serbs, Croats, Bulgarians, etc) originated in the area called Ruthenia which is split between Poland and Ukraine. By the 500s they had split into Western Slavs centered in Poland and Eastern Slavs centered in Ukraine. Northern Russia was occupied by Finno-Ugric tribes and was sparsely populated, but the Eastern Slavs gradually pushed north. Around this time (the 700s) Vikings from Sweden began settling in the area and intermingling with the Russians. The name Russian actually comes from a term the Vikings used for the natives, "Rus'" from Old Norse "Roþlandi" (land of rowers) For most of the middle ages people in Ukraine and Russia shared a common language and culture and this is still largely true. Ukrainian is considered by some linguists to be a dialect of Russian as they are mostly mutually intelligible. Like I've said, the concept of an independent Ukrainian state is a very new concept. The first Ukrainian state was formed in 1917 after the treaty of Brest-Litovsk when the central powers created the Ukrainian People's Republic, also know as the National Republic of Ukraine. The Republic was mostly controlled by right-wing or anti-communist groups and so they developed a form of nationalism based in Russophobia. This was made worse by the terrible borders drawn by the Soviet Union. Crimea, which had always had a population of mixed Tatars and Russians, was given to Ukraine. A large area east of the Dneipr river (which is what Russia is invading Ukraine for) is also almost completely Russia". He's got some content knowledge. For him to be impressed by what he saw speaks volumes (and I'm not bragging about my son; I'm complimenting Knox).

The campus itself is small, making it easy to make friends of all ages and backgrounds and make it to and from class on time. The classes offered here are compelling, engaging, and challenging. The faculty and staff are supportive and have consistently pushed me to be the best version of myself as possible inside and outside of the classroom. Here are some of my favorite things about Knox: - Ease of getting involved on campus (volunteer opportunities, language and cultural clubs, athletics, performing arts, etc. open to all students) - Galesburg! The neighboring town of the school is complete with all of the stores a college student might need (Kohls, Wal-Mart, Target), as well as yummy restaurants (Baked Pizza, Landmark Cafe) - Amtrak: Knox College is an easy five/ten minute walk to an Amtrak station where you can board a train and be in Chicago in a matter of hours - Community: Knox is a close-knit and diverse community of scholars from across the United States and the world itself. Students come to Knox to learn from esteemed faculty and each other. I value the friendships I have made at Knox, and look forward to an incredible future with them after graduation

His older brother just graduated (after 7 semesters) with a double major in Chemistry and Math and a minor in Physics. He will start his PhD in Chemistry at the University of Iowa this fall. The faculty in Monmouth's chemistry department was very supportive and the small class sizes and close relationships with professors provided exactly the setting that allowed my son to reach his full potential and thrive. Fortunately, he knew right from the start that he wanted to be at a small liberal arts college in a rural setting. It definitely was the right choice for him and he had a very full, well-rounded college experience, not just academically but also as a track athlete and a member of the pipe band. As a mother, it is reassuring to know that my younger son will be going to a place where staff and faculty are genuinely interested in the well-being and growth of their students and I look forward to continuing our family's connection with Monmouth.

Being at a small school I got to know my professors and classmates more than I would have in a large lecture hall. They became mentors and partners and helped to make the most out of my schooling. I learned just as much outside of class as I did in class. The opportunities to learn, grow, and experience at Monmouth College are too numerous to list. For example I learned contract language while serving as President of ASAP (Association for Student Activity Programming). Living on campus at a small liberal arts college was an experience that I wouldn't give up for anything. I am proud to give back to my Alma mater twenty years after graduating. This school is known for education and has a great nursing program, but not the only options for majors. One daughter majoring in communications and the other in Social Work. We attended Preview this weekend and I was very impressed with all of the education provided to students and parents. Students were able to register for classes and get their student ID so that is all taken care of before school starts in the fall. My daughter had a great time and met many new students!

Where do I begin? I am currently enrolled at this institution and the only reason I do not transfer…read moreout is because I have one semester left. DO NOT ATTEND THIS SCHOOL! First of all, administration is circling the toilet. It takes WEEKS to get an email response from anyone in any department. Billing, financial aid, advising, etc. Calling is not better because you either get a voicemail or someone that has absolutely no business answering the call due to an utter lack of knowledge surrounding the department which results in a "call back" that never happens. Since enrolling, I have had three classes added to my graduation plan that popped out of nowhere. I have also had teachers leave mid semester, one of which affected my grade so badly, I had to drop the class. When I reached out about getting the course refunded, they stated it was past the deadline. I explained that I only had to drop because of THEIR TURNOVER issue and they still did not refund me. Mind you, I have dropped other courses past the deadline and understood I was ineligible for a refund. This, however, was 100% the fault of the school and should have been treated as such. I am not sure who monitors the curriculum, but there are professors on complete power trips that literally drown you in coursework. College curriculum should be challenging and teach you about time management, but this is another level entirely. There are professors who have a complex assignment due every single day. Juggling this with four other classes can be extremely overwhelming and no one seems to care. I enrolled as an online student because I do not live in the area. At first, this was fine. However, over the past year, they have moved to "live streaming" courses for most of my classes which is so incredibly inconvenient! I'm in a completely different time zone and have had to make arrangements at my work just to attend courses. The whole point of being an online student was so I could attend school around my work schedule! Finally, the utilization of respondus lockdown browser for non-degree specific courses is ridiculous! I major in accounting, so having it as a requirement for accounting courses makes sense. But why do I need it for a marketing course?? Stupid. This school is a complete joke and I cannot wait to be finished with this institution so I never have to look back. I will be dissuading every single person I know in the area from this school as I have siblings and cousins graduating soon.

Unfortunately, the reality was very different and the decision turned out to be a major mistake. Students are treated more like high schoolers than college adults, with policies and oversight that feel controlling and out of step with what most families expect from a university. The most alarming issue, however, is how the school appears to handle rape and sexual assault. From what we witnessed, the system seems to protect perpetrators far more than it protects victims. Individuals accused of serious misconduct appear to face minimal consequences, while victims can feel ignored, blamed, or even vilified for speaking up. That kind of environment discourages reporting and raises serious concerns about student safety. Drugs and alcohol are also clearly present on campus, yet the systems meant to monitor and address these problems seem ineffective. We did ask questions about safety and student well-being before enrolling and, unfortunately, believed the reassurances we were given. In hindsight, the reality did not match the rhetoric. Overall, the college does a very good job marketing itself and creating a positive first impression. Unfortunately, our experience suggests that the reality behind the brochures is far less reassuring. Families considering this school should ask difficult questions about student safety, accountability, and how serious incidents are actually handled.
