We had such a great time! The grounds were gorgeous and the house was immaculately preserved inside and out! The grounds included many out buildings one of which was the original kitchen. Darlene was our docent and was extremely informative. She really knew her stuff! We learned so much from her! Just be advised that the site is open Friday and Saturday from noon to four as of 4/'23. Please come here there is so much history to see and hear! It's worth every second! read more

What an amazing tour and gorgeous property. We had Miss Susan and Connie as our tour guides and I learned so much in one day about life around the Civil War era from pre to during to post Civil War in Atlanta. Even better: they showed ties between Stately Oaks to Margaret Mitchell's "Gone with the Wind" both the book and film. Everyone was super friendly and nice (even to a Yankee like myself) and I have been praising it since! I hope others will definitely visit because the rich history should never be forgotten! read more

The tour guide was very kind and sweet she did a great job! It is just hurtful that the slaves at that time were not even mentioned in the tour. And this may have been because the tour guide didn't want to be offensive. But we must have these courageous conversations, I feel we owe it to the millions of people's lives who were taken at such a painful time in our history. read more

If your in town or close go visit Stately Oaks! I did the tour with a friend and we absolutely loved it. Their is so much history to learn and the tour guide really knows a lot. If you like Gone With The Wind they have a lot of stuff from the movie! The house is absolutely beautiful with so many historical pieces. The grounds had fun replicas of buildings back in the day. LOVED the tour of the Stately Oaks grounds. History is always interesting when it comes alive. Our tour guide, Kathy, was perfect in her period dress and her southern accent was to die for! Kathy gave a wonderful synopsis of the house and the history surrounding the period in which it was used. She gave several examples of where some of our sayings originated from, including: "Don't throw the baby out with the bath water;" "sleep tight and don't let the bed bugs bite;" and many more. The grounds have an old fashioned country shop, as well as the only standing one-room school house in Clayton county. There is also an Indian reserve in the back that has also been reserved. Lastly, there is a "tenants" home that was reserved for sharecroppers on the land. The home itself is reminiscent of the antebellum south, though not as large as the glacial plantation homes in Mississippi, but typical of the area. The freestanding log kitchen behind the home is original to the house and really just makes you thank God for modern conveniences -- those individuals utilizing the kitchen certainly had skills above and beyond ours! read more

This place can teach you SO much about the civil war, Indians, the culture at that time, and even that little best seller "Gone with the Wind." ....you kids remember that quaint story with the handsome stud muffin Clark Gable...? My tour guide was Kathy and she very knowledgeable. She gave our group of a complete run down of civil war history, cultural behavior, and even was in period garments. The Stately Oaks Plantation depicts life around the time of the Civil War. The site includes the home, a school, a store and a kitchen among other buildings. The home is not as large as some the plantation homes we visited in Louisiana; rather, it is the home of a cotton farmer of more modest means. Regardless, the home is filled with numerous period correct artifacts. (Note: This is not the original site of the home. The original location became too valuable as commercial property, so the last owner of the home arranged a sale which required that the home be move to another location where it would be preserved as a historical site.) We took the guided tour; it is modestly priced at $9/person (senior rate). Joyce was our guide; as manager of the site, she is a wealth of knowledge. She gave us a detailed history of the house and the families that occupied it. She nicely described the many artifacts and how they fit in home and the time period. If you're in south metro Atlanta area and would like to tour a plantation setting, take in the Stately Oaks Plantation in Jonesboro. The people there are welcoming, knowledgeable and provide a rewarding experience. read more

We really enjoyed our tour of Stately Oaks. The costumed docent wasn't available the day of our tour but one of the owners gave the tour and she was wonderful and very informative. The house is lovely and we enjoyed seeing the authentic antiques inside the house. You're free to roam around the outbuildings outside the house but you need to purchase a tour to enter the house, and there is no photography allowed inside. I would recommend this tour to anyone who is interested in history, beautiful houses, and/or Gone With The Wind as Stately Oaks was supposedly Margaret Mitchell's inspiration for Twelve Oaks in the novel. read more

This was a very disappointing tour. The fact that the tour guide was uncomfortable discussing that the family owned slaves and attempted to make it better by saying, "well they weren't really treated poorly, like everyone thinks. This family actually shared slaves with other families..." is disheartening. I understand that slavery is a tough topic to approach for some people, however, it is a part of history; and to act as though slavery didn't exist, by referring to them as indentured servants, is insulting. Acknowledge all parts of history as they were. read more

This was a wonderful addition to our "Gone With the Wind" sights tour we did of Georgia. The tour guides were amazing and very knowledgable of the Jonesboro area and of the Civil War in general. Both John and Art were knowledgeable tour guides with great explanations of both the history of the beautiful antebellum house, and the Civil War history in the Jonesboro area. We were looking for something to do enroute from Atlanta to parts south. Like a bunch of old-timers, we checked our hard-copy "Georgia" guidebook from AAA and noticed this mansion/plantation. I am glad we stopped to check it out and took the inside tour. The large structure where the tour is happens on the hour and the building is air conditioned! They have some interesting displays and furniture throughout the home. I especially enjoyed the celery serving "vase" on the dining table. Those quirky Victorians! read more

Kathy was my tour guide and she was like my long lost history teacher or one I wish I had. She knew so much about the history of the house, the old south, the civil war and Gone with The Wind. I loved visiting there. I was here for the Christmas tour and I am definitely coming back in the spring and August for two separate tours. Great place, take the family or a groups of friends. If you're from Jonesboro, you know about Stately Oaks. Day cares and schools alike - especially us Suder kids - came here more often than our homes it seemed. There's some history preserved here, so for history buffs there's plenty to see. If you're into Civil War history, well, it's an even bigger treat for you. From time to time, craft fairs are run here, and the Battle of Jonesboro has staged fights on the land as well on the dates the battle originally took place. There's also a variety of other events that take place, from spaghetti dinners (ah, the South!) to weddings and more. It's out of the way for tourists and most natives, and I wouldn't recommend it over some of the other preserved landmarks out there in Atlanta. However, if you have time or are looking for another lost moment in time that you haven't seen outside the city yet, Stately Oaks has plenty for you to see. Certainly off the beaten path, but it's nice to see that Atlanta hasn't mowed down all of it's history quite yet! read more

Stately Oaks is very informative with history in the mid 1600s. It has been voted in the top 10% of museums in the world.

we had friends visiting from Copenhagen, Denmark who expressed a wish to see something "gone with the wind-ish" So we took them to stately Oaks. Ashleigh was just fantastic! Her views, comments during the tour were informative and she made it much fun. We visited while they were presenting the "mourning tour" which she will explain when you visit in August. Now we must go back during the many other parts of the year to learn that history. This is definitely a destination when friends visit in the future. read more

If you love history then you will love this place! The ladies that give you the tour are in time period dress and take you around the home. They are up front about letting you know this is not Tara from Gone With the Wind but that Clayton County is the the Gone With the Wind capital. Love their front porch! They have rocking chairs that you can wait in before the tour begins. There are also other buildings around the house to peep into and explore. read more

Jennifer, our tour guide made this visit so much more enjoyable. She was dressed in a period costume and she knew her history. As we walked through the plantation house she answered our questions and took as much time as needed so we could take everything in. There are several outbuildings which are furnished pretty much in the time they were used. Some of them, as with the plantation house itself, were moved to the location...but you'll hear all about that when you visit. All in all, it was a fun, informative visit and I'd recommend it to just about anyone. Really young children won't get much out of it, although there is a schoolhouse on the grounds, but pre-teens and older should enjoy it. A little disclaimer - I am terrible with names. I think our tour guide was Jennifer. If I'm wrong, I'm sorry. However, whatever her name, she was FABULOUS!! read more

I was so excited to go to Atlanta Georgia w my husband to visit Tara from Gone with the Wind knowing it was not film there, For a Saturday we miss the 1 pm tour bus which was the last tour for the day that sucks they only run 2 tours a day . but we were lucky enough to get a 3pm tour of the house n gift shop the tour for the house was excellent you should not miss this .The couple of ladies that did the tour for us were amazing very interesting n knowledge I forgot their names sorry. Visited over the Memorial Day Weekend. Was a very enjoyable and educational tour. Connie was our tour guide and she did a great job, she really knows the history of this plantation. I highly recommend visiting when in the area. Had a great time and will be sure to visit again if I am in the area. The small admission fee and donations are what keeps this piece of history alive. If you are a local, it is a great place to take the children and grandchildren to learn about the local history of Jonesboro.
