I walked in to find "ordering screens" replacement people, something that I consider a downgrade. The ordering process was relatively straight forward, but overly complicated in my opinion. I sat and waited for my drink, it was called out quickly, which was nice. I chose a flat white, which was very flavorful and one the better ones I've had recently. I didn't try the food, it it looked decent for a coffee shop. The ambience was dark and moody, but it was a warm, cozy retreat from the rain outside. It seemed popular and quickly filled up with people, and although it's a large-isn't location, there didn't seem to have appropriate seating. I would go back, but I have a lot more coffee places to try in Manchester.

It's still part of the JW Lees pub chain mind you, selling their beers (so don't be expecting anything too exciting flowing from the taps), but they've done away with the company logos on the exterior and really put lots of thought into how to target their revised customer base - diners with a slightly more modern appetite. The dining spaces are smartly designed and depending on your party's size, you could reserve a semi-private area for your meal. We sat in the conservatory restaurant area which overlooks the beer garden and Bridgewater Canal; it's a light and airy part of the building, even in winter. Their food menu is seasonal, so we got to see what they were offering for winter. We were all sold on the Sunday roasts though, which were good quality and reasonably priced at £10.50. Feeling the need to treat ourselves to dessert, we ordered sticky toffee puddings (gorgeous) and a cheeseboard. The service was a well-oiled machine; the team worked seamlessly and were very welcoming. It's promising that there's now another local eatery that you could take your whole family to and they'd be well catered for.

Other strange activities later ensued, including men pouring cups of water down each others throats, and swinging heavy tables with their mouths.. Thank goodness I only got a half pint! Tepid doesn't quite equal fiery, more's the pity. The free wifi means you might even get some work done, although it wasn't too functional last time I was there. It attracts locals, creative types, professionals and academics; the clientele and inhabitants that give Chorlton its distinctive edge. If you can get a table during the day be sure to enjoy the peaceful side of The Bar with its resident beard-scratchers and pontificators. Also minor when you consider that the food was of a good standard. Not having kids myself I hadn't thought about changing facilities, but perhaps that's something they'll improve in future. Harvest Pale was my beer, which was a ok price, and of a good quality. Will have to try the Chorlton Pale next time! Lavishly decorated, this is the sort of place you dress up for. Door policy can be quite strict too especially for boys so make sure you're all dressed up. Drinks are expensive but you kind of expect it for the sort of place you're going to so try and hit a few bars first. It's a bit out of the way up near Victoria Station but I usually have a few drinks on the way in the nicer bars on Deansgate. I always send an email and get on the guestlist when I'm thinking of going, it's free and you get to queue jump so it makes much more sense than just turning up.
