Writers like Lord Byron, Victor Hugo, Mary Shelley, Charles Dickens, etc. also got inspired by this castle. I was staying in Montreux and it was a 13-minute bus ride that drops you off right in front of the castle. You can also take a train to get here. It's well-preserved as it's the only castle not destroyed by war or fire. It's a beautiful castle that's sitting on top of Lake Geneva. I was content seeing the outside of the castle despite getting free tickets to go in since I have Swiss Travel Pass. I was busy watching a couple of swans building a nest. Sometimes, I'm just not in the mood to stand in line to see dungeons, medieval art, armory, and somebody's chamber. I had other places to see and visit and didn't want to spend too much time here. But from admiring the view from outside was wonderful enough.

Our tour group reserved a train car for the trip from Lucerne to Montreux, Switzerland…read more Swiss trains ran on time to the minute, and we were lined up ready to go, when our tour leader, at the last moment, boarded a different car from where we were standing. Critical mistake, as we went from front of the line to the second half of the party of 42 boarding. Of course the first 22 people took all the front facing seats, with we having to get back facing seats. And no changing train cars as our tour group had seats reserved only in that train car. We ended up having to twist our necks for the next 4 hours to take pictures between the photo bombing trees of waterfalls, snow covered mountain peaks towering over luscious green alpine valleys, with immaculate swiss chalets dotting the countryside. And whoa if you have motion sickness, as backward facing seats only exacerbate the condition! Trains have comfortable angled seats, similar to front car seats, complete with tables. Windows stretched the entire length of the car, and vertically from seating level to wraping around the curve of the ceiling edge. Best views were on Lake Geneva, on the incline down to Montreux, the Swiss Riviera, with calm deep blue green waters, with mountains in the background. Even in Switzerland nothing is perfect. Once we got to Montreux and the rail yards, you had graffiti covered bridges and delivery transport!

A highlight of our recent trip in Switzerland was our several day adventures on the MOB Golden Pass…read moreLine. We had purchased a Eurail Pass to use on our 4 country trip and I knew the Golden Pass was going to be one of the highlights. I not only found it to be much easier to book than the trains in Italy or the UK but I found it to be cleaner and they ran flawlessly. We used the MOB ( Montreux Oberland Bernois) first class Belle Epoque car to go from Montreux to Zweismman via Gstaad just for the pure scenery and then we did the Prestige Class car to Guyeres via Montbovon for the pure luxury and again ALL scenery. It's relatively easy to book on the MOB site with a Swiss Rail pass or Eurail Pass but you must book a seat reservation for 1st class in the Belle Epoque car ( which feels straight out of the Orient Express!) or the Prestige Class Car. You will pay an up charge and to me it was worth it. We just used the MOB Golden Pass last week ( March 20-22) and the Zweissman to Interlakken Ost was not in service due a service issue. We did run into an issue on the way back from Zweissman and had to get off the train at Montbovon wait for a bus and ride a bus to another stop and then get on a random train because of a rail issue. That was not fun as the roads are super twisty; there was no refund or apology and I suppose one should feel safety is the upmost importance but I did find that annoying. We used the other MOB Golden Pass line one day to go up to Rocher de Naye via funicular and again the scenery is superb. This funicular climbed and climbed via rail and if you have ever or NEVER experienced the Swiss alps, you should just once in your life. This is one way to see it in all of its beauty and glory for the heaven that it is. The trains do run on time and the service is standard. Except for the day we had Prestige Class, we had champagne in that first class car there was no snack etc. so bring your own-- first or second class. I still recommend this as a way to see Switzerland landscape and its alpine glory for all that it is. We hopped off in a village and had lunch in Haut de Caux and hopped back on after a lunch of fondue and feel we lived a dream. Even the Montreux station is pretty!

It gets much nicer the closer you get to Montreux, but you'll find them the whole way down. A well paved path, it's pretty highly used by all manner of walkers, runners, and dogs. Not to be missed - definitely take it to/from the castle if you have the time.

Later on I'll be reviewing the Castle of to shit. Anyways, this tower is situated near the lake and is in the city near Nestle. Yes the company is from Switzerland. Saw the building too. The tower has some kind of walk way to it, but it was closed when we got to the door. We then took a walk around the tower. There was a cave with water dripping through the top as it was raining when we were there. Also a little area full of yachts. Cute place to meander around. The museum of games is here too.

We've been in Gruyères several times before. Sometimes private, sometimes with my students. This…read moreyear again I came with my students to visit the village and of course the Chateau. We booked a visit in advance for a self-guided tour. Schools from Switzerland visit for free (except weekends and vacations). But let's talk about the history just quick: The Château de Gruyères was built between 1270 and 1282 to serve as the seat of the powerful Counts of Gruyères. After the bankruptcy of the last count in 1554, the castle was managed by bailiffs from Fribourg before transitioning into a private summer residence for the Bovy and Balland families in 1849. Since 1938, the Canton of Fribourg has owned the estate, transforming it into a popular museum that showcases eight centuries of regional architecture, history, and art. Many parts of the Chateau are open to visit on several floors. Lots of rooms (including the kitchen, the Knights room, bedrooms....) to check out. Informative plates and displays all around. All kept in very great shape with staff present as well. You can walk the rampart also, very cool with impressive views. The garden is wonderfully presented and you can walk around the Chateau as well (at least partly). Views over the valley and mountains are breathtaking. The courtyard is a nice place to take a rest and to enjoy more views. A really rewarding visit and definitely a highlight in this village. Staff was great. There's a small shop, toilets and some lockers for your backpacks. We will definitely be back. One of the prettiest Chateaus in the country in my opinion.

The cobblestone streets, the preserved old buildings, and then the castle rising at the top -- all like something out of a postcard. We didn't go inside, but wandering around the exterior and the surrounding grounds was more than enough to make the stop memorable. The views of the rolling green hills and mountains are stunning, especially on a clear day. There are plenty of spots to take photos, and the scenery alone makes it worth the climb. The area around the castle is peaceful and beautifully maintained, perfect for a relaxed stroll. Even if you're short on time or just passing through for cheese and chocolate, stopping to admire the château from the outside is a must.

Yelp Review 2026 #162:…read more Place de la Palud is in the heart of Lausanne's Old Town. It's been an important area for merchants when a market was established in 1220. Til this day, there is a market here. Vendors selling flowers, fruits, vegetables, cheese and other food. This was once a marshy area. There's a water fountain, a clock that surprised me. I happened to walk in front of the clock and all of a sudden, I witnessed a show. It's animated clock that goes off every hour from 8am to 9pm. There's shopping and restaurants nearby. It's a busy place.

There are nice views of the lake and mountains from here, and it's usually a great spot to catch…read morethe sunset. The pyramids themselves and the concrete in front are kind of ugly, but they're useful for exercise -- I've seen groups running or hopping up and down. There are also people who picnic from the top or just lounge around to enjoy the views.
