It's stands outside a large glimmer that looks out all over the city. It's very close to the water front area. Now the original David is made of marble, this statue although gold toned is made of foam and fiberglass. It's sprayed with a brilliant gold finish. Whoa, whaaah? Hmmm [Louisville KY] Well, to my surprise I guess I only had to go as far as Louisville in Kentucky to see the Statue of David and I didn't have to be around any tourists! Actually, at 30-feet tall, Louisville's David is almost twice the size of Michelangelo's original masterpiece in Florence Italy and it's all in gold... well, it's actually spray-painted with a gaudy gold paint... and made of styrofoam or fiberglass (not sure) but certainly not Italian marble LoL! The giant golden statue stands outside in front of 21C Museum Hotel on Main Street (who, btw, also owns the statue) which probably turns heads in downtown Louisville... the statue was one of many kinds of street art and statues on Main Street. What is that!? I was visiting Louisville and driving around downtown exploring the city when I passed this random, giant, gold statue of David! I couldn't believe my eyes, I did a double take, and of course I had to loop back and check it out. It is quite impressive. Located on Main Street outside of the 21c hotel. Street parking can be challenging during the weekday if you are going to stop but there are all kinds of things to see on the street including the KMAC Museum and the Kentucky Science Center to name a few. Outside the 21C Museum Hotel in downtown Louisville, is an art piece that has spurred some controversy. The statue is based upon David (after Michelangelo) and was created from a cast of a work by Serkan Ozkaya in 2005. It's not an original concept or image, but it is a double. Actually, it's a double-sized double. Standing nearly 30 feet and painted gold, this foam/fiberglass statue stands upon a pedestal outside the museum hotel. Some are "offended" by the nudity. Some are "offended" because it is a double. Some are "offended" because it is painted gold. Seems like a lot of people get offended easily or don't even try to figure out why this piece is here (see 1 star ratings as proof.) With just a little research, I've read the backstory on this piece and found it quite interesting. It's too long to go into here, but anyone who cares enough to write a review is encouraged to read about what brought it to Louisville. It's a 30-foot-tall golden replica of the Statue of David, standing up for all to see at the corner of Main and Seventh streets in downtown Louisville. What is there not to like? My favorite story about the Statue of David was told to me when I was on a walking tour of downtown Louisville. The tour guide told us how she was leading a tour of school children down Main Street. Her back was to 21c Museum Hotel (David's host), telling the kids about the historic cast iron façade buildings along the block. Fun fact: Downtown Louisville boast the largest collection of cast iron façades of anywhere outside of New York's SoHo district. *(Cue rainbow) The more you know ...* Anyway, the tour guide was educating the future leaders of America when they started pointing behind her and giggling. She turned around to see a flatbed truck parking behind her with the giant Statue of David, laying on its back, a coy smile on its face and all of its gilded manhood facing up toward the beautiful Louisville sky. I love how Louisville is so indelibly weird. Why do we have a copy of David, in Gold, in downtown Louisville? Why is his penis bigger than the one in Florence? Fun fact: an old lady and my Godmother had that discussion when we went to see it years ago. Why, oh why, is this considered living my best life? When I saw the original in Florence I didn't take a ruler to it so I am unsure of the accuracy of this comment just the awkwardness of it. This is near other attractions downtown so be sure to check David out and make sure you ogle his butt as well. He's fit. If I was fifteen, twenty feet tall, fit and covered in gold I wouldn't put clothes on either because really: where would you buy them? If there was a golden, naked lady on a street corner downtown so many people would lose their tiny, tiny minds about it. Why don't we slut-shame David? Ask him to dress more modestly? If something happens to David he was asking for it. Anyway, the Community Director for Yelp in Louisville says that you can come to Yelp Events naked if you too are twenty feet tall and covered in gold leaf. Haha it seems funny to review a giant, golden statue of David on Yelp but here goes! David is certainly an eye catcher as he struts his stuff near the 21C Hotel. Recently David got a face lift and was repainted so he would look extra special for all of Louisville's Derby visitors.
