A group of us came here for a late lunch after a great hiking. I ordered baked Chicken with rice & gravy, buttered carrots and green beans. Everything tasted good. Chicken was well baked. My meal costed below $10 and I should say it was reasonable and affordable. The general manager Nedal Mefleh asked me where our group came from and I said from Atlanta, GA. While we were having our food he came by and inquired about if everything was fine and took a picture of us and posted them on Facebook and directed us where to check on their site. Steak House Cafeteria is a long-standing American institution with fried chicken and other down-home dishes, plus daily specials. It is a Classic southern cooking served cafeteria-style. Even though the name indicates a steakhouse that's not really what they have going on here and I think that's important to point out. Ambiance and service was good and clean. Plenty of seating available. A friendly small town atmosphere. They have a separate lot for parking just besides the restaurant and it's free. Recommend it to anyone ever in the area.

I was very excited to come to this restaurant after a long day of hiking in South Carolina and I was kinda disappointed. I came in with a big group of friends from Atlanta and the owner was very excited about it, even took group pictures of us. He was very nice. This is a buffet type of restaurant. I was very excited when they said "FRIED CHICKEN" but the chicken wasn't flavorful, neither the sides. The rice was good but the "beef stew" they put on top ruined it. The cheesecake was very bland. Definitely not how I like my cheesecake. Overall the staff was very nice and the restaurant very clean. I just didn't like the food.

    Thanksgiving meal

So we went here for a thanksgiving dinner with a bunch of friends. A relatively medium size line to get in, but it kept moving. My wife not normally a fan of cafeteria/meat and three type places. Inside was nice and well organized. The meal was actually quite good. Selecting your meal a la carte made it simple to get all the things you like and skip the ones you don't. Stuffing was a square looking block (pan cooked) but it was good. Their carrots were awesome slightly sweet. Saw the fried chicken breast they are known for, that looked good... we'll be going back to try that in the near future.

A group of us were almost done with hiking for the day, and there was word of this amazing Arabia fried chicken. It's hard to pass up fried chicken after a hike, so we headed on into Walhalla for a late lunch! Steak House Cafeteria is cafeteria style, where you select your entree, and your sides if you desire, all of which are ala carte. We got the following: beef stew ($3.95) Fried squash ($2.50) Brussel Sprouts ($1.95) Rice and gravy ($1.60) Corn ($1.60) Pork chop baked ($3.95) Cornbread muffin ($0.40) pear salad (didn't catch the price) So first up, I actually didn't want to try the beef stew at all. I DID want the fried chicken, but I found out by staff that they fry all their fried goods in the same oil as their fish, and since I'm allergic to fish, the famous fried chicken was a big no go for me! The actual beef stew was tough, flavorless, and the rice and gravy was also not salted or seasoned with any flavor. The gravy was more watery than gravy consistency. I didn't finish this. The brussel sprouts I tried were mushy. The corn I tried was the best thing on my plate, although these needed pepper and salt. Still, again the best thing on my plate. My girlfriend ordered the pork chop, squash and pear salad. The pork chop was also fairly dry, but it did have decent flavor. I couldn't try the squash because it was fried in the same oil as the fish, and the pear salad was a couple of pear halves, with cherries, shredded cheddar cheese and mayonnaise. Yep...mayo! It wasn't bad flavor, but it was very unexpected. Service for us came quickly, and they were able to accommodate a large group. Customer service was nice, and they happily took photos of our group to put on their facebook page. Very nice people In terms of flavor, I likely would not come back here. If you live here, it's likely a nice cafe style place for you to get a bite. Maybe if we weren't so hungry I wouldn't have rated it the way that I did, but ultimately, I have had better cafeteria food. Nice staff, ample parking and great location are all great things, but ultimately flavor is what I look for, and Steak House Cafeteria was lacking

Save your money, fix yourself a peanut butter sandwich. Unless you have a damn allergy to peanuts, then go for a hike and have a seltzer.

The best fried chicken ever! Simply amazing and ungodly. The strawberry shortcake is good. The sweet tea is the bomb.

You walk in, grab a tray, and you've got options. You can go through the hot bar and get served right there, pay, and be on your way... or order off the menu, sit down, and they'll bring the food to you. Very simple and efficient. The inside is spacious with plenty of seating, and there's also outdoor seating if you want it. Parking is easy too, which is a big plus, especially compared to the chaos you'll run into closer to Helen. Food wise, I always judge breakfast spots by the chicken, egg, and cheese biscuit... and this one held up. The chicken was tender, the biscuit was soft and fresh, and overall it was a solid start. The surprise for me was the hashbrown casserole. It came out good, but once I added a little salt, the flavor really popped. Definitely worth getting. The pancakes were also done right... nice crispy edges with a soft, fluffy inside. That's exactly how pancakes should be. Menu wise, they've got everything you'd expect from a Southern breakfast spot... biscuits and gravy, eggs, bacon, sausage, country ham, pancakes, omelets, and even lunch style items like burgers and plate meals if you come later. They also have a Coca-Cola fountain, which is always a win. Service was friendly, especially for early morning, and the whole place just has that comfortable, old-school home cooking feel. There is also a drive thru if you don't feel like leaving your car. Overall, this is a great spot if you want a good breakfast without the crowds. Simple, tasty, and easy.

Poor service, poor food quality. Not impressed at all…read more Ambience is nice, very spacious, newly built, restaurant. Friendly staff. Not very attentive at all. Say for 15 minutes before the manager had to obtain a server for our table. After the food was delivered, the server did not provide adequate service. I requested a water refill, which took an additional 15 minutes, because she continually forgot. Food quality wasn't the greatest. They served chicken, which consisted of 2 thighs and 2 drumsticks. Along with friend catfish filets, that had been way over salted. Both were very soggy. I ate half the thigh and quit. Veggies? Only vegetables were Lima beans, everything else considered vegetables, was a casserole. A table full of starches. Over rated and over priced. Sadly disappointed. If you want good southern food, go further south to Thomasville, GA. Go to O'Neals. You can fool some folks, but not someone that knows southern cooking. We won't return.

The new Temu version sucks. So incredibly devastated and disappointed!! You should probably change…read morethe name along with all the other changes because this is NOT the Dillard House. As a local, I have gone to the Dillard House my whole life and it has always been one of my most treasured spots but sadly it will never be the same again. I visited for the first time since bought out by some Atlanta conglomerate called Legacy Ventures and boy did they just take the character and soul completely out of this place to make a buck. All of my childhood memories and the charm of the south, replaced with some generic millennial grey design bullshit and shitty recipes. Was the old place fancy and swanky? Absolutely not, but here in the country we like our charm like grandma's tried and true biscuit recipe: Not pretty but dang does it taste good. Thank God they kept the family style menu, but boy was the food NOTHING to write home about. I can't say that anything tasted as good as it used to. It was all cold and overcooked and certainly not prepared by someone from the south that knows what they're doing. The cured salty country ham that made your mouth water...bland and uncured. Missing some of the best staples the menu offered. Completely ripped out the country store and gift shop. I didn't want to believe the other locals when they told me what had happened, but now that I've experienced it, I'm not sure I can continue to support this place. They have replaced the kids from Rabun Gap that always worked there with people who are clearly not familiar with the place nor how to show Southern hospitality. I always admired the fact that they gave jobs to kids to learn how to serve the community and make a little money. Every kid should have that experience for character growth. I thought for sure I'd be able to bring my children here one day to experience the same nostalgia that is seared into my mind and heart, but sadly that will never happen now. Can we PLEASE stop selling out our cherished local spots to people who clearly don't know anything about the area or care to honor it? Let's keep the country the country and you city folk can do whatever you want there. It's also very clear that nothing is being done to improve these conditions with the onslaught of negative reviews from lifelong customers online. You may fool new customers that don't know what they're missing, but the lack of traffic on a Sunday proves the point that you aren't making changes to "honor the past experience and care about the feedback." Word of mouth travels fast.
