Great food and a great owner! Salsa was amazing. The owner is a super nice guy, came and talk to everyone to make sure everything was good. Place is really clean and even play good country music. I would definitely recommend this place. Just don't get the steak, it was pretty tuff. read more

The restaurant is a bit outdated. Could probably use some renovations in the dining room. They were however, doing some construction while I was there. They start you off with chips and salsa, like most good Mexican restaurants do. I was not a fan of the chips though. They were kind of hard and not very tasty. They also give you soup. I ordered the chicken fried steak with cheese and gravy and it was good. I would note that the food reasonably priced an the drinks come in very large cups which I like so that I don't have to get refills every 5 minutes. They do get packed around noon so I suggest getting there early. My group's food came out quick and The service was good, but not outstanding. read more

Overall the service was friendly and quick. We were served chips and salsa after we sat down and also given a small complimentary soup. Food was tasty and served in generous portions. The prices are those of a quality restaurant but the food is far from quality. I have heard old stories of the food used to be good, but not anymore. Loved this place and we eat here every time we come thru the area. But the service tonight has ended that tradition. I've had better service at a fast food place. First it took them forever to bring our drinks. Then the waitress finally came over to take our order. She was very rude. Then she brought out the wrong order. She didn't apologize, just snatched it up and walked off. Then my employee asked for hot sauce. She never came back. When she finally brought my order, it was still wrong. We had to yell to get her attention where I asked for the bread that was supposed to come with them (menu said meal included 2 slices of bread) and also reminded her that we were still waiting in the hot sauce. She comes back later with the hot sauce and single slice of white bread. Didn't apologize at all. Just handed it to me and walked off. The final insult was that she never came back. We had to walk to the front and ask for our check. This is the first time in my adult life that I didn't leave a tip. I've never done that before. But the idea of tipping someone who obviously had 0 people skills would just reward her for awful customer service. The sad part is that my crew and I are staying in this town for 5 days. Took nearly 30 minutes for my medium-rare 16oz. T-bone to arrive. Impossible to cut with the serrated knife provided - finally had to resort to using my own pocket knife. After cutting off all the fat and gristle, I probably was left with about 6oz. Of actual steak. Fries were soggy and unappetizing. When I finished and went to pay, there was no one at the checkout. Had to wait another 5 minutes before someone finally came to let me pay. When she rings up my bill, I see that she has charged me $15.99 for a steak that is $13.99 on their menu. When I ask about this, I am told that they had to raise the prices, and that everything is about $2 more than what the menu says. I tell her that you can't advertise one price and then charge another after the meal. She says that she agrees, and they e tried to talk to the owner, but he won't change the menu. With that said, there ain't much in this dirty little town. -The food was decent. -My Dr. Pepper came from a can -the par for this town. -The tortilla chips and salsa are my favorite in town. You should ask for a second bowl if there are two of you. Nobody likes a double dipper. -The restaurant was mostly clean. -There's something odd about the tv's, I can't put my thumb on it, but you'll see what I mean. -I didn't feel like I was rushed while ordering or checking out. We were visiting Zapata for business and the lady at the hotel recommended this place. Even though it doesn't have great reviews, we still decided to give it a chance. We walked in and seated ourselves, just as the sign requested. It took about 5 minutes for the waitress to bring menus to our table and take our drink order. We ordered quickly, but waited about 45 minutes before our food came out. We were waiting and waiting and then we were about to leave and finally our food came out. The food was horrible. How can you mess up tacos?! I ate as much as I could stomach because it was so bad. Even though I left hungry, it was better than taking another bite of this horrid food. The reviews are correct. Do not go here. I'm sure if this place was anywhere else, it would not survive. I hope once the renovations are completed that they are able to get some people who can actually cook. I ordered ribeye steak medium rare since it is a steak house it should be great. It took one hour to be served and granted it was Friday night, but an hour? The steak was pink but there was no juice. It was dry and tasteless. I even put steak sauce on it to get some flavor (I never use steak sauce esp. On a ribeye) they also piled wilted soggy French fries on top of the steak as if they were trying to hide it. It also came with some beans and a little rice. There was a little lettuce and a tomato slice but no dressing so I think it was a garnish. Not a lot of choices in Zapata, but this was a bad one. We stopped here for dinner tonight after reading the reviews here. We figured the complaint about slow service was a problem that one night. It wasn't. My wife ordered a T bone steak and I ordered the 22 oz. Rib steak. It took 40 minutes for our steaks to arrive (others in the restaurant that had come after us had already received their meals and were leaving. We ordered the steaks Medium Well and they came overcooked - burned to a crisp and extremely tough. We returned them and waited another 25 minutes for new steaks to arrive. The new ones were a little better cooked but they were still tough as shoe leather. Mine also was about 40% fat. We ate what we could and left. We complained to the csashier since she said she was in charge - no manager or owner was there. She was apologetic and only charged me for the regular sized Rib steak. I thought she should have taken more off the bill but she said the owner makes them charge even if the customer complains. There was one other serious issue. We watched the girl that was cleaning tables. The rag she was using to wipe the tables fell on the floor. She just picked it up and continued to wipe the tables.This is unacceptable. I would suggest staying far away from this place. They have no idea what the word 'steakhouse' means. read more

To be frank, this is NOT a steak house. Don't let the name fool you! Almost all of their menu is Mexican food with a few dishes like steak and salad thrown in. This restaurant is definitely the place to go in Zapata. They recently built a beautiful new building in the same location. The portions and the prices stayed the same but they did add a few new delicious items to the menu. The owners are some of the nicest people around and do anything they can around the restaurant. You can't go wrong with the country fried steak, chicken cordon bleu, quesadilla, or the nachos.
