Then years later, I got interested in them again through a Seriouseats article that had mentioned their Royale egg burger. Years passed. Our go-to burger joint right now is Shake Shack, but Steak 'n Shake is closer. One day, we finally decided to check this location out. Ordered two burgers, fries, onion rings, and a Butterfinger shake. The food was ready promptly and tasted better than what we had expected from the low yelp rating. The Butterfinger shake was more satisfying than our local Dairy Queen's with more chunky mix-ins. Not a great experience. I picked up my food at the drive thru with no issues, but when I got home to eat it, my first bite of the burger ruined my lunch. The bun was very stale. It was so inedible, that I transferred the sandwich to some wheat bread I had at home. It wasn't tasty. Hot dog was ok, fries were fine. Shake was good. I tried calling them all afternoon, but never got through. I guess they just don't bother to answer. It's certainly not because they're busy. It was well after prime time lunch, and I don't think they do much business here anymore anyway. I can certainly see why. That's one of the disadvantages to pick-up. If I had eaten in house, I could have brought it to the manager's attention. He would definitely have been able to see what I was talking about. My intended phone call was not just for my own dissatisfaction. It was to let him know the problem so he could fix it before feeding that garbage to others. No luck though. I guarantee that if they used those stale buns all day, they'll lose even more customers. It took them 20 minutes after we we're seated before they took our order. They didn't even give us our drinks until 20 minutes later. The waiter was touching the food with no gloves after scratching his head. Also he didn't give us our food until it was luke warm. Also got my order wrong, after they took our food away the waiter dropped one of the ranch cups on the ground and never picked it up. He was just standing around doing nothing. Three tables even left while we were waiting. They said it was because they were short staffed but the staff they do have aren't doing anything! My review of the Steak 'N Shake Triple Steakburger... Well, this one exceeded my expectations because I thought I was in for typical, greasy fast food slop. Because that's what a lot of my friends say when I tell them I'm going to Steak 'N Shake; expect grease. Just was not the case here at the Elk Grove store. My triple came out piping hot with lettuce, tomato, pickle and mayo (no cheese on this one). It was part of the $4 deal they've got going on. Along with the burger I ordered cole slaw and a bowl of vegetable soup. A decent-size chocolate chip cookie comes with the deal as well. All in all I think a great value. To ensure that Pudding is serving the correct beverages, Pudding sniffs the beverages with care. Note, this is not a creepy sniff, but more of an endearing and caring sniff to ensure that the customers are deeply satisfied. Pudding uses some "interesting" language while serving crowds of young adults. My wife, son and I stopped here last night for dinner. We wanted a little something better than fast food but not the lengthy time of a sit down. This seemed to be a good compromise. It's been a couple of years since our last visit to a steak and shake. First off, let me start off with why a drive thru. These burgers are made to order, not a production mode like McDonalds or BK. Your not going to get quick service in a drive thru in a place like this. Just not going to happen. Which leads to my complaint about slow service. Drive thru gets priority and bogs down the sit down portion of the business. Now for the food...pleasantly surprised! We all ordered melts and they were very good. Much better choice than McD and BK. The price was right in line too. The reason we haven't been to SnS because we thought it was a pricy burger. With today's places like 5 Guys and pricy burgers, it's nice to see SnS staying in line with a realistic burger price. The burgers and shakes here are standard with what you can expect from Steak n' Shake. The menu has a lot to choose from, so I think it's normal to take a while to decide on what to order here. Even the shakes are available in so many different flavors. Besides the main menu, the items on the "2 for $3" value menu are decently sized and an inexpensive way to fill up the stomach, although they do contain a lot of bun compared to everything that goes in between them. Probably not by coincidence, but the layout of this Steak n' Shake feels just like those of other Steak n' Shakes I've been to before. Burgers were greasy, thin, and old. Nothing fresh about this place. Customer service was awful today. Only four other in the whole restaurant and our food took over 30 minutes. I can't understand why the long wait if our entire order was cold and stale, I mean who are you kidding there is nothing made to order here it seemed to be all pre-cooked and kept under a heat lamp. My seasoned parmesan fries were smothered in salt so much so they were just plain uneatable. Im giving it 2 stars because the shake was half way decent. Where else could I sit in a booth and map out my cross country trip as I chow down on a spicy chicken sandwich, decent chili and awesome raspberry yogurt shake. YUM. They seem to never have biscuits ready in the morning during the morning rush. 5 of the last 7 times I've gone this has been the case. And selfishly, it sucks because those biscuits are my one cheat breakfast each week. First, as I sat there I got to see some kitchen areas and it was pretty gross with some kind of used paper bags strewn all over the place. Then a girl cane up to the window, wouldn't open it and said the drive thru was closed, I'd have to come in to order. I've been at Steak and Shakes all over the midwest, never had an issue.
