I also had a beard trim and nose/ear wax and left the barbershop feeling like a new man . Visited Modern Hairdressing for a cut and finish on Thursday…read more Really happy with my haircut which is the main thing, and the place itself is furnished/fitted out to a really high standard (they have TV's built into the walls next to the mirrors so you can watch TV while getting your haircut!) The only thing which lets this place down is the service. I didn't really feel looked after during my visit (no-one acknowledged me when I entered for example).

Staff were pleasant, shop was tidy and fairly busy which I took as a good sign. When it came to getting my hair cut however the hairdresser seemed vacant and distant, more interested in other things and conversing with customers who were waiting while she chopped away. Although a little bemused by this I thought nothing of it, this is her job after all, she knows knows what she's doing. As it turns out I couldn't be more wrong! Towards the end of proceedings a small electric clipper was produced seemingly to tidy up a few things. While this was being used my left sideburns was shaved to above the ear at an upward pointing angle. The hairdresser then said something to the effect of "is that ok for you" while reaching for the mirror to show me the rear of my head and indicating the job was done, I had to ask her to do the other side of my head to match (a good inch and a half to two inches in difference!). This is not what I wanted but if one side is going to look ridiculous then they need to match! The full extent of the damage wasn't realised until the full light of next day when I realised she'd also shaved off part of my widows peak on one side of my head... All in all, a terrible experience, I look ridiculous, most definitely couldn't recommend to anybody else and wouldn't return.

The young ladies who do the cutting will give a customer a special haircut if required, and children get a lollipop after their trim. There is no appointments system. Customers wait their turn, as in my younger days (I am 72 years old), which suits me fine. A pensioner's trim costs £5.50 (and eyebrow trims are free!). Car parking: park on street or in Britannia car park (free), just across the bridge. I like this barber shop.

Fortunately, there wasn't much of a queue for late morning on a Saturday, and it's not so sketchy a place that I daren't take my phone out to help fake not listening to my increasingly anxious waiting room neighbour ("I'm not going down fer it, I'm not!" etc etc). It's £10 for a "trim", with myriad options of side length ranging from grade 5 to nothing, but I reckon they'd have a go at most contemporary styles. The chap next to me was getting a very tidy retro-comb back with grade 1 sides and a little wave at the back, which the dude seemed to manage pretty well, even if it did look a little 2011 (meow). Untroubled by such transitory desires as being fashionable, or even looking attractive, my skill requirements are far lower, and the choppy chappy managed my personal barnet composition (something I've christened "The Dad") with casual aplomb. He did seem to spend a lot more time on one side of my head than the other, which wasn't good for my missed-breakfast paranoia. Also, the banter/conversation was garbled nonsense, although they did offer to glue some hair back on for me at the end. Still the best budget haircut I've had in the city centre.

However I have very fine hair and I think it takes an expert to make fine hair look good and I did not think they managed to do that.
